Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Evolving from the popular Triumph TR2, although the TR3 looks similar, it features more power and better braking.

Beloved by global buyers, particularly in the States, the Triumph TR3 has always been sought after for its simple, unadulterated driving experience. The combination of a small car with a relatively big engine, sitting inches above the floor, offers a unique experience. While that may be its main appeal, factor in the reliable simplicity of its engineering, ready parts availability, and out-of-the-box charm, and it's not hard to see why these cars continue to attract adulation.

You’ve come along just at the right time, ready for the summer months, to potentially become the proud owner of this well-cared-for and more desirable 1958 Triumph TR3. Having been restored in the early 2000s it is still in great condition today, having spent most of its life in South Africa, it was imported to the UK in 2021.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Edward the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve always loved the shape of the TR3, so when this came along, I didn’t want to miss out on the chance to own one.

Edward had always been taken with the looks of the Triumph TR3, and it was in 2022 that he spotted this lovely example, which had been in the UK since the previous year.

Spending most of its life in South Africa, the car was restored in the early 2000s and still presented extremely well when it arrived in the UK some 20 years later. After some general maintenance, Edward has enjoyed the car, but with a new addition to the family, it is simply not getting the use it deserves, which is the reason for parting with the British classic.

Please feel free to ask Edward any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The beautiful lines of the TR3 have been enhanced with the choice of grey metallic paintwork.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with silver-painted wire wheels and chrome knock-ons, these look to be in good condition. The tyres are a matching set of 165/80/R15 Federal Supersteel 657, which all have plenty of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

As mentioned earlier, the TR3 was restored in the 2000s, and the bodywork presents well.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in grey metallic, the paintwork is generally in good condition. There are some minor chips that have been picked up over the years and a couple of small splits in the bonnet that haven't gotten any worse under Edward's ownership.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The chrome work is in nice condition with a bright finish. The headlights are in good order with no damage, but one of the spotlights has a cracked lens, although this wouldn’t be a difficult item to replace. The rear lights are free from any splits or cracks.

The windscreen looks in good order, with minimal signs of scratches. The removable roof fits well, and the plastic rear windows are damage-free. There is also a tonneau cover which fits nicely.

Interior

Sitting behind a wood-rimmed steering wheel, faced with a great-looking instrument layout - there's no better place to be.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with classic-style seats, these are trimmed in vinyl and present very well, with no rips or tears. Edward told us he has had the driver's seat lowered, removing ~1.5 inches of foam, as he is 6'3", so now his head doesn't stick above the windscreen, with no adverse effect on a shorter driver. Edward has also fitted a new set of lap-style seatbelts.

The carpets fit well and are in good order throughout, with no real signs of wear. A set of rubber mats are also fitted to help protect them.

Inside the boot, the carpet is in good condition and the spare wheel sits neatly behind the removable panel.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition with no noticeable damage. The glove box lid shows many Triumph Car Club plaques which is another giveaway suggesting that the car has been owned by fellow enthusiasts.

The instruments present well and are thought to be working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of ~17,756 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A three-spoke steering wheel with a wooden rim is typically classic and in very good condition. The short gear lever shows little signs of use.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Twin SU carburettors sucking in air through K&N air filters - is there really a more classic sound!

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with the 2.0-litre engine, which produces ~95bhp, the Triumph fires up well as seen in our cold start video. After a few minutes warming up, it is ready for the road and is reported to run with no issues.

The four-speed gearbox has a nice change and, to help with fuel economy, is fitted with overdrive.

Suspension and Brakes

The car sits nice and level and out on the road the ride is as firm as you would expect without being too crashy on uneven roads.

Stopping the TR3 is as expected for a vehicle of this age and the brakes are said to have been well maintained, no issues have been reported.

The Drive

It's a two-seater British sports car from the 1950s, which is a fantastic experience to drive or even be in as a passenger, which is part of the reason these British classics are so appealing to many collectors and enthusiasts.

Electrics and Other

All of the electrical equipment in the car is said to be working correctly meaning it is ready to jump in and enjoy.

History and Paperwork

With a restoration in South Africa in the 2000s, the TR3 is still in great shape and well-maintained today.

As you can see in the paperwork, Edward spent more than ~£5,000 on minor snagging repairs to ensure the TR3 was working as it should. Aside from the repairs the car has been well maintained whilst with Edward, receiving a full service with new spark plugs and points along with a new starter motor carried out in April 2022.

This is a lovely example of the 1958 Triumph TR3. Edward has invested plenty of time and money into making sure everything is as it should be, so the car can be used as and when the urge takes place.

We've done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarized our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail. This has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything on this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
