1999 Porsche Boxster (986)

Premium Classified Sale

Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The Boxster offers a thrilling driving experience at a more accessible price point than a 911.

The Boxster (986) was Porsche's first car designed as a roadster since the 550 Spyder. A mid-engined flat-six, it was released in 1996 ahead of the 911 (996), with which it shared much of the front-end body, interior and engine architecture. The car has been a huge success for the marque and was its biggest volume-selling vehicle until the Cayenne was released in 2003.

Being a 1999 model, this car comes with the larger 2.7-litre engine and is said to be one of the twin roller-bearing engines, minimising the potential IMS problems leaving you to fully enjoy the most affordable way into Porsche ownership.

This car comes from ~1 year ownership with an MOT valid until 06.07.2024, however Rob (the owner) will have a fresh MOT test carried out before the sale.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Rob the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Sharing the front end of a 911 (996), the Boxster is a fantastic-looking car, especially with the roof dropped.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original twin-five-spoke alloy wheels, these have been refurbished at some point and generally present well; there is a tiny kerb mark on the front driver’s side wheel.

Three of the tyres are Accelera and one is Continental - all have a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Looking around the car, the panels align well with visually equal gaps. There is a small amount of hairline cracking on the front bumper where it has been nudged at some point, but you do have to look hard to spot it. The electric roof works as it should, going up and down in a matter of seconds. It is in good condition with just some minor creasing and rubbing marks from where it has been folded.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in L744 Schwarz Metallic Black, the paintwork is in good condition - there are just some minor stone chips in keeping with the age and mileage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen has a small chip on the offside, and there is a small amount of de-laminating on the lower corner. The side windows are in good condition with no excessive scratches. The plastic rear window has no damage but has discoloured slightly which is often seen purely down to age.

Headlights and rear lights are in good condition with no damage. the headlights have got a very small amount of discolouration, but this could be easily rectified with one of the headlight restoration kits available to buy.

Interior

Electric leather seats, air conditioning, upgraded stereo, what more could you ask for in a two-seater roadster?

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with black leather electric seats, these work as they should. The leather has a small amount of wear to the driver's bolster, and there is a small hole halfway up, which could possibly be repaired by a leather seat specialist, both door cards are in good condition too.

The carpets in the cabin are in good condition and there is a set of factory Porsche mats also fitted. The front storage area is clean and tidy, and the space-saver spare wheel is present. The rear storage area is also tidy, but there is some light wear to the centre of the carpet.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition with no signs of damage and the instruments are working correctly with some of the bulbs being replaced. There were no warning lights displayed when the car was running at the time of our visit, the odometer showed a reading of ~88,912 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original leather steering wheel is in good condition with no excessive wear, and the gearknob has some minor signs of age in keeping with the mileage.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The 2.7-litre flat-six has impressive performance with ~220bhp and a 0-60mph time of ~6.7 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.7-litre fires up easily with no signs of any smoke on our visit and with no issues reported. It was given a full service in August 2023 and also had 2x new radiators, 2x air conditioning condensers, 2x timing chain adjusters and a new alternator.

The five-speed manual gearbox has a smooth change and no untoward noises are coming from the transmission.

Suspension and Brakes

Sitting a little closer to the ground, the Boxster has been lowered by a previous keeper. There are no knocks or bangs, and whilst it has been lowered, the ride hasn’t been compromised.

The brakes bring the car to a stop in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal, and the discs look to be in good condition.

The Drive

The Boxster offers a driving experience which is great fun and very rewarding, thanks to it being comfortable, powerful, and well-balanced due to the mid-engine layout. In addition to all of that, it’s also extremely practical, with plenty of storage (unusual for a roadster), it has an electric roof and air conditioning, which was re-gassed last year after the condensers were fitted.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the Boxster looks to be in good condition. There is some light shining on the buttons, but no excessive wear. Replacing the original head unit is a Pioneer stereo, which has Bluetooth and an external mic for hands-free calling.

History and Paperwork

Two keys, owner's manual and a healthy number of service stamps.

There are several invoices showing parts purchased for the Boxster since 2020. Unfortunately, before this, there is only the service book, which has 13 stamps plus brake fluid changes and long-life condition stamps.

There is a current MOT on the car, which expires on 06.07.2024. However, Rob will be putting a full test on by the time the auction ends. This well-maintained example has had in excess of ~£2,000 spent on it in the past 12 months, bringing it up to scratch; with everything now working as it should - the Boxster is ready to be enjoyed this summer.

We've done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail. This has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything on this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
