Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The Mini Cooper is nothing short of joy on wheels.

When first unveiled to the world in 1959, it soon became clear that the Mini had potential for competition. Formula One builder and racer, John Cooper was one of the first to seize that opportunity, and soon got together with Sir Alec Issigonis to produce one of the most inspired pieces of automotive marketing; the Cooper badge. Debuting in 1961, these Cooper badged Minis were distinguished by their racing-tuned engines, twin-SU carbs, a close ratio gearbox and front brake discs. All in a small car, and still very much a novelty at the time. The MK2 Mini Coopers, which debuted in 1967, didn't deviate much from the original, save from a wider rear window, a reworked grille, and minor cosmetic changes to help distinguish the models.

The Mini Cooper established an impressive competition history but also sparked off a whole generation of small sports cars, making the Cooper the car to beat. Though this may have been accomplished, nothing came close to the charm and simplicity of the Mini Cooper. The truth is there will never be another car like it.

Registered in 1969, this Morris badged Mini Cooper 1000 MK2 is finished in an authentic Tartan Red colourway with a black roof. It has seen the benefit of a Minisport engine and gearbox, along with documentation of a 2019 restoration amongst ~£10,000 worth of invoices over the last ~6 years. Fitted with several stand-out modifications, including upgraded front seats and a full-length Webasto sunroof. All round, with the smooth hydrolastic suspension and improved comfort and performance, this makes for an enjoyable touring machine, easily keeping up with modern traffic, it retains much of its original look and feel and has to be considered a superb opportunity to own a stunning and well-restored Mini Cooper.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The usual story, too many cars not enough time!

David is no stranger to British sports cars and has been active with the BMC scene since he passed his test many years ago. With plenty of experience, knowledge and contacts within the classic car world, he has an eye for a good Mini. Picking up this Mini Cooper late last year, he has fixed a few minor issues and uses it regularly, most recently on a trouble free trip up to Gaydon and back. It is usually stored in a secure and dry facility.

With an impressive fleet of machinery under his name, he has concluded that he needs to focus his time on other cars and feels that the Cooper is the one to let go. David will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Restored to a high standard, the car retains its crisp detailing and style.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is mounted on white 10” Cooper S steel replica road wheels, which show minor paint chips but appear to be free of damage.

The car is fitted with a full set of Falken tyres, specifically created for the Mini and reveals plenty of even tread.

Bodywork

Externally, the scuttle panel and areas around the ‘A-Panel’ are decent. The panel gaps are generally positive, with a little fettling needed on the passenger doors. Otherwise, they open and close with ease.

The car is free of dents or distortions.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The red paint has been neatly applied, with a decent lustre and smooth, constant finish. A handful of blemishes were noted, with a minor under-paint issue spotted on the top of the offside front wing and outer door well.

We also noted a little paint cracking on the same door well and a minor paint run on the near side A-pillar. The car is generally free of road damage, with a minor chip noted on the front of the nearside wing and one of the rear boot hinges. The black roof has been neatly finished.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The front sliding side glass, rear hinged side glass and their seals are in great shape. All bear the car's registration plate security etching. The windscreen is free of damage and the rear glass shows a handful of light surface marks.

The chrome trim is well mounted, with no significant damage or pitting, although the nearside rear light bezel shows a little more age. The bumpers and grill are correct for the model year, with attractive period door-mounted domed mirrors. The drivers side door handle functions but may need a minor adjustment.

Interior

Retaining much of its original simplicity, the cabin is excellent shape.

Seats and Carpets

The car is fitted with aftermarket charcoal velour seats with headrests; they’re in excellent shape and comfortable. It appears to retain its original rear vinyl seat which is free of damage. The cabin is finished off by a pair of 3-point Securon harness seatbelts.

The neatly fitted carpets are an aftermarket one-piece fitting, with no notable wear or dampness.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in presentable shape, with decent vinyl padding and a cleanly presented instrument cluster. The centre control facia has an age-related patina with a minor repair noted above the heater control. The aftermarket tachometer is not currently attached, and the car has a dual port power socket and USB charger adapter, which was not tested on the day.

The headlining is clean and no damage was observed on the door cards or bins.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car is fitted with a rare 4-spoke Mountney steering wheel, it has a few age-related marks on it, but nothing major.

The wooden gear knob is neatly presented.

Mechanics

Mechanically sound, with the benefit of a rebuilt engine, this Cooper packs a punch.

Engine and Gearbox

The Minisport supplied engine was installed in late 2018 and was demonstrated to start up without issues. The engine idles without any undulations and asides from a little carbon build up during the cold start video, it settled down wth no additional exhaust smoke. It has benefited from several modifications, including a three-branch manifold, reground crankshaft and rebuilt twin HS2 carbs. There was no evidence of engine fluid leaks on the day, as mentioned in the on the road video the solenoid was replaced and we visited again to film the cold start video.

The 998cc engine felt lively on the move, pulling well from rest and in mid-range with the large bore exhaust system providing an additional grunt. There were no issues with the engine starting from warm, and no signs of misfiring. It is well presented with evidence of maintenance, decent hoses and ancilleries.

The 2018-fitted gearbox with a rod-type set-up operates smoothly, changing up and down without crunching. There are no reported problems with the clutch, with no juddering on take-up or slipping.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride was typically bouncy, but smooth. It is fitted with the ‘wet’ hydrolastic suspension and we didn’t hear any knocks or squeaks.

The car brakes evenly with no pulling, squeals or judders. David showed us that the car slowed down with a positive pedal action and no sponginess. The front discs and pads were replaced during the 2019 restoration.

The Drive

There is no other car that drives like a Mini. That driving position, proximity to the ground and the audio feedback are only a fraction of the Cooper's appeal. Its steering was direct, with tight vibration-free turns and no notable signs of slackness or unwanted pulling.

The car powers up to speed without problems, maintaining 50 mph with ease and no observations of engine temperature or oil pressure problems. It handles well, with decent road manners and plenty of grip.

Electrics and Other

As mentioned earlier the tachometer is not currently hooked up but David tells us everything else is working, to his knowledge.

The car has been fitted with a professionally installed full-length Webasto sunroof. David has not reported any leaks and it's a good fit and easy to operate.

History and Paperwork

There's an excess of ~£11,000 worth of invoices which includes bodywork and mechanical renovation.

First registered by Stewart & Ardern LTD in Acton London in early 1969, the car was assembled at the Cowley plant in late 1968. Leaving the factory in white with a black roof, it appears to have lived in London well into the 1990s where it was painted red. There are copies of DVLA documentation listing the first 6 owners.

It was subject to a restoration by Croydon Minis in the late 90s and a further restoration in 2019, which also saw the installation of a rebuilt MiniSport engine and gearbox. Invoices covering this restoration parts and work are included in a folder and suggest ~£5,000 worth of spending at Minisport and an additional ~£4,000 on the body restoration along with a previous ~£2,000 worth of invoices before then.

It comes with its heritage certificate and original handbook and was an entrant in the 2017 Cooper Club tour of France. The car is Road Tax and MOT exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Yes, it drives very well. There is a demo on the site, The engine is run in and starts, drives, steers and stops as you would expect a Cooper to do. It easily keeps up with modern traffic. My reason for selling is due to my age, hence thinning down my small collection of BMC cars.
It has driven around 400 miles in the last six months, including from Somerset and Gaydon (from Oxford) . Fault free, except for a starter solenoid, which I have replaced. There is also the possibility of fitting Sparco ‘racing’ seats, replacing the more comfortable ones (to me!) shown in the advert If you buy the car, I do not think you will be disappointed,
