The Alfa Romeo GT 1600 Junior was introduced in 1972, to plug the gap between the GT 1300 Junior and the larger-engined 2000 GTV.

This 1974 example is presented in a good condition and is one of the later models with the name GT 1600 Junior before Alfa Romeo rebadged the car as the 1.6 GT Junior.

The car is finished in a classic red and with a little bit of TLC, this Alfa Romeo could be further improved. They are nimble, light and give exquisite feedback, gear change should be slick and generally a hoot to drive.

A fun little fact, because these cars weighed just about a ton. When driven enthusiastically, these Juniors were quite prone to balance on three wheels around some bends!

He is also a great friend and loyal client of ours at Trade Classics - a proper petrolhead - talking, researching and driving cars all the time. He takes care of his cars too and you can tell by this 1974 Alfa Romeo Junior.

He bought the car 3 years ago as an import from South Africa, using the car sparingly along with the rest of his car collection. We had a great day with him recently as we met him outside the office and took some amazing shots of some of the cars he is selling, as well as getting behind the wheel ourselves.

Exterior

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone, this Alfa has become some sort of an icon over the years - a true classic shape!

Wheels and Tyres

The 14” aluminium Alfa Romeo sport wheels look to be original and benefit from maintaining a good condition all round.

They are wrapped with a full set of Continental Contact 3 tyres that are 12 years old. However, they still have around 5-6mm of tread looking at the images.

Bodywork

Giorgetto was heavily influenced by his earlier design of the Alfa Romeo 2000 as he embarked on his first project at Bertone.

Please watch the ‘Exterior Review’ video as you will be able to see every angle of the bodywork. The car looks generally in good condition with some minor rust showing in typical places like the bottom of the doors.

Generally the car looks to be free from rust, and you can see from the photos and videos that remedial work in the form of paint and filler etc has been carried out on the car over the years.

Paint

The red shines beautifully in tandem with the chrome work and is even across the car. There are some areas worth noting like the usual stone chips, and a bubbling effect and scratch on the nearside door panel. Also, you will see some paint cracking near the front and rear badges of the car.

Glass and Trim

Both are good across the car.

Along with the bumpers, an extra set of fog lights have been installed to this car, giving it a bit of a different look on the front end.

Interior

The black vinyl interior gives you a classic feel so you can focus on what matters… Driving!

Seats and Carpets

Vinyl seats in the front and rear are presented in excellent condition, having been recently re-upholstered.

The carpets have been removed from this car, and rubber matting installed in their place. Watch the video review to see the inside in detail.

Dashboard

The dials on the dashboard look clean, the glass covers are a little bit foggy, however.

On our drive out, the speedometer was not working, a typical issue for this era of Alfa Romeo.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both look to be original with no issues and in a condition fair of the car’s mileage.

Mechanics

With a weight of roughly 1000kg, the Alfa Romeo is ‘nippy’ and provides an authentic driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1,570cc in-line four-cylinder engine looks to pull really well in our ‘On the Road’ video.

The usual 5-Speed manual gearbox changes gear smoothly as you would expect. The clutch is also at an optimal halfway point, displaying no issues on our drive out.

Suspension and Brakes

As far as we know the suspension is still stock. We felt no bumps or heard no rattles on our lovely drive out around our local area of Leamington. We also tested the brakes in our video and they worked responsively.

The Drive

Fitted with the 1600cc engine, many people say it is a more engaging drive with its rev happy nature compared to the larger 2000cc in the GTV.

On our short drive out, we gave the car a bit of revs to hear the engine singing. Watch the video to see it in action.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with a modern radio. There are not that many other electrics on the car, and as mentioned the speedometer is currently not working.

History and Paperwork

Surjit has owned the car for 3 years after importing it from South Africa.

Under his ownership, Surjit used the car in its first year, driving roughly 2,000km. Since then he has kept the Alfa in storage whilst he has used some of his other cars in the collection.

There is not much history from the car’s life in South Africa which, is reflected in the value of the car. A V5 is present (UK registered date 1976) as well as the import documents (showing 1974) from the seller and DVLA in the history file. The car had some problems put right in its first MOT in the UK such as; re-positioning the lights, repairing the hazard light and illuminating the registration plate, and lastly, rectifying the insufficient washer liquid.
