Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

The quintessential campervan from VW, represents a chilled and relaxing way of life for many.

The Volkswagen Type 2 first appeared in the 1950s as a forward-control light commercial vehicle. As one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger vans, the Type 2 gave rise to many competitors, although none would quite gain the same reputation or following. The T2 gained a lot of its popularity during the counterculture movement of the 1960s and became known as the "Hippie Van". Production eventually moved to Brazil, which ceased production in December 2013 due to the introduction of stricter safety regulations. In 1967, we saw the second generation of the T2 introduced; being a 1975 model, it was often called the “Late Bay”. The van had lost its distinctive split front windshield and was considerably heavier than its predecessor.

This van is the final version of the T2 fitted with the larger Type 4, 2.0-litre engine, has been the perfect choice for the owner's son and daughter-in-law who have taken it across France without any problems. It comes with a current MOT valid until 13.08.2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Philip the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

What better way to start married life than to buy a camper for your honeymoon.

Purchased in 2017 for a three-month honeymoon tour around France, the classic T2 was chosen by the newlyweds because of the colour, functionality, and quirkiness of a classic VW Campervan. The honeymoon went superbly, meeting plenty of other people also touring France and often being complimented for taking on a tour in a classic camper. One of the main successes of the tour was trouble-free motoring.

Since the honeymoon, the T2 has been in the care of their parents, who have put it into storage, as the couple moved to Singapore shortly afterwards. Now, with small children, there are no plans to return to the UK, which is the reason for the sale of this classic VW. Please feel free to ask Philip any questions about the "Camper" in the comments below.

Exterior

With a more modern look than the earlier “split-screen”, the bay window camper is just as popular.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with white painted steel wheels which look in good condition, these are finished with chrome VW hubcaps. All of the tyres look to have a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Generally, the bodywork is in decent condition, but there are some areas of corrosion and blistering, mainly on edges of some panels. The doors appear to align well and open and close as you would expect. As mentioned in the on the road video the van received a minor scrape to the offside rear quarter panel.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The T2 has been repainted at some point in the past by a previous keeper. The colour choice was bright metallic green with a white roof and bumpers. There are some signs of age to the paint with some lacquer peel, mainly on the front panel and the centre section of the side panel, some might say patina for a VW.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All of the windows appear in good condition with no noticeable scratches and the seals also look in good order. The headlights have a bright finish with no damage, as do the indicators and rear light lenses.

There is a Webasto-style roof fitted, but we didn’t open this on our visit as it hadn’t been opened for a few years. However, it was thought to be working correctly when it was last opened.

Interior

The T2 has a huge amount of room inside, making it the ideal day van, perfect for those weekends away.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with the original seats, the fronts are still very usable but would benefit from a retrim. The carpet in the cab area is in good condition but would benefit from a deep clean. In the rear, the laminate flooring has lifted up on the edges but would be easy enough to replace.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard has been painted over in cream, which does lighten up the cabin. The instruments are in good working order, and the odometer shows a reading of ~6,951 miles during our visit.

Please see the interior gallery for more high-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel and gear knob are in place and look in good condition for their age.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The 2.0-litre engine was the biggest and most powerful choice for the T2.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1,957cc engine fires up without hesitation and has no issues reported when running. On the road, it pulls strongly through the gears, which is nice compared to the smaller-engined T2s.

The gear change is typical of a T2; there is some play in the linkage, but the selection is quite easy. Watch the video to see and hear the car start up and in action on the road.

Suspension and Brakes

Out in the T2, the ride is smooth, with the T2 soaking up the road with no knocks or bangs coming from either corner. The brakes bring the bus to a stop, as you would expect, with no issues reported.

The Drive

What better feeling than throwing your bags in the back and heading off for a weekend away in a classic camper. The T2 is great fun to be in; it never fails to turn heads and puts a smile on your face from the moment you set off on your adventure.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the car appears to be original, which has a light amount of patina but is all said to be working correctly. There is a Kenwood head unit installed which is connected to a pair of 6x9 speakers mounted below the rear seat. There is also a leisure battery fitted which can be switched from the "Battery Status" monitor, also mounted in the base of the rear seat.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~7 year family ownership, purchased specifically for a European honeymoon, the vendor's experience of owning the T2 has been positive.

The V5C is present and shows four previous keepers have owned the T2 since it was imported to the UK in 1996. Unfortunately, there is no history paperwork other than the online MOTs, which help give an insight into the condition of the T2 in the past. There is currently an MOT on the car, which will expire on 13.08.2024.

This 1975 example was purchased with one thing in mind: to have fun, explore France on a three-month honeymoon adventure and get them back home, which it did extremely well, and plenty of happy memories were made.

Now it is your turn to make happy memories, be it on an adventure for a few weeks or months or quite simply to use as a day van for the odd day or weekend trip away.

Whichever you decide, it is sure to bring a smile to your face. We've done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail. This has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything on this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
