The coolest of cats, the MK2 is everything you need in a classic car.

Conjuring up visions of fast-paced racing and getaways, the MK2 Jaguar is firmly lodged in the upper echelons of desirable family sports cars. Its power and agility, combined with its mechanical durability and good parts availability makes it an obvious choice for those who also admire the MK2's practicality and style. When rolled out in 1959, it was the fastest production saloon car in the world. Setting the template of what the sporting saloon should be, and it is true to say that there was no other car like it. Considered the ultimate of all of the MK2 models, the 3.8-litre version with the manual gearbox is reflected in its demand. With ~220BHP on tap, it was the ideal car to whisk along the motorways with 4 people and their luggage in comfort. Fitted with disc brakes and a full-synchromesh manual gearbox, it is still more than capable of dealing with the job at hand.

Coming from around 7 and a half years with our vendor, this 1965 example is finished in blue with a grey leather interior and has a manual transmission with DeNormanville overdrive. It is a genuine UK-specified 3.8-litre which has spent some of its life in the States. Re-imported in the early 2000s, the structure of the car is remarkably solid and drives very well - it would be an ideal base for a cosmetic restoration. It will be sold with 12 months MOT which is currently being actioned.

Meet the owner

Unbeknown to me, the car was actually owned by a friend ~20 years ago!

Re-imported into the UK in the early 2000s, it transpires that owner was well-acquainted with Ian during their time at University in the 1970s. However, he was unaware of his prior ownership until he saw his name on the documents. Sadly his friend has since passed away and therefore the Jaguar holds a special memory of him.

Since taking on the car ~7 and a half years ago, his original intention was to sort out the cosmetics with a view of restoring it into a Coombs-type car. With his business and house renovations taking much of his time, he has reluctantly decided to sell the car. Ian will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

For a project car it's remarkably solid, making an excellent base to start from.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels are in decent condition, with good spokes and rims.

The car comes with a full set of Vredestein tyres which were all fitted in 2017. They have plenty of even tread from our observation.

Bodywork

The body has a decent panel fit, with acceptable shut lines. The doors open and close without too much resistance. Please note in the photos the bonnet appears to be slightly proud, the catch had failed on the day but Ian has assured us that this will be fixed for the car's new MOT. The passenger door wells are solid, with a little corrosion noted around the driver's side.

The lower front valance will need further investigation and we noted a few rust spots emerging under the paint on the bottom of the rear doors and nearside rear spat, with a couple of bubbles spotted at the base of the rear screen. Otherwise, the panel work was generally free of significant damage. The structural aspect of the car is positive. The front chassis legs look sound, with no issues noted on the suspension mounts, inner wheel wells or boot floor. The floor pan areas are decent, with mild signs of corrosion spotted on the outer bottom sills.

Paint

The dark blue paint finish is evenly finished with a good lustre. There are a few flat spots on the side of the car, and some of the paint has started to crack and in some cases become brittle and flake off. This is most noticeable on the nose of the car, offside A-pillar base and front doors.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is free of chips with good seals, but there is some lamination damage noticed on the rear screen. The headlights and rear lenses are in decent shape.

The trim is mostly complete, aside from the boot badges. The chrome work is in line with the age of the car, although the door chrome frames are in notably good condition. The front bumper has mild pitting and the rear bumper has a satin finish with a few marks but both are solid.

Interior

Strightforward to sort out, an interior refurb would be the core of the project.

Seats and Carpets

All seats would benefit attention and repairs, but are still perfectly usable.

The carpets and mats appear to be complete, there is mild wear in places but still presentable and all damp-free.

Dashboard

The dashboard and door cappings show evidence of sun bleaching and could be a deeply satisfying job to either strip down and repair or replace them. The damage appears to be superficial. The centre console shows age with a missing gear lever gaiter. The rocker switch console dials and switches are said to be functional.

Some of the lower facia trim is missing, but there are a few items provided with the car. The original radio has broken buttons and was not tested on the day. Both main dials are legible.

The driver-side door card is holding on to its life and will need attention, but the rest of the door cards are in better condition. The headlining has a series of holes above the driver's seat. It should be pointed out that the interior has not suffered water ingress, as we couldn't smell damp.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in presentable condition, with both the wheel and gear lever in line with the age of the car.

Mechanics

A confident performer, the car drives and rides beautifully and still sounds sensational.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up readily with no unwanted knocks or rattles. Idling smoothly once the engine warmed up, there was no excessive exhaust smoke noted during the duration of the start-up or test drive. The engine appears to have seen maintenance and attention.

The gears engage quickly and silently, with no reported issues with the clutch. The overdrive cuts in smoothly and disengages quickly. Watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride was supple and remarkably tight around the corners, with no notable knocks or vibrations heard from the wheels.

Ian placed complete confidence in the car braking, demonstrating it could brake safely with no fade. No vibrations or pulling were noted at the steering wheel as we slowed down at junctions and traffic lights.

The Drive

The combination of a manual gearbox and the big engine displacement makes this MK2 a spirited experience with impressive mid-range flexibility. Those who know these cats know how the 3.8 keeps up with modern traffic without any issues, with braking to match.

Composed at town speeds, the car accelerates smoothly with no hiccups helped by the throaty resonance of the stainless steel exhaust. Ian pointed out that the engine temperature has remained stable and was happy with its oil pressure.

Electrics and Other

The car needs a handful of fixes to be carried out, mainly the bonnet catch and washers, but these will be soted out for its new MOT.

History and Paperwork

Spending on its electrics and a new MOT offers mechanical reassurance, the car comes to market from ~7.5 years ownership, a UK RHD that has spent some time in America before being repatriated.

Originally registered by Imperial Motors in Cheltenham in 1966, the car's first owner is documented as a Harley Street tailor. The car was then believed to have been exported to the US at some point but there is nothing in terms of documentation about its stay abroad, but it was reimported back to the UK in the early 2000s by its first owner in Oxfordshire.

After a recommissioning, it was then sold to its second owner in Wales and eventually stored in the back of a mechanics garage for around 10 years. Taken up by its current owner, Ian, in 2017, he spent ~£1,700 on a new wiring loom, as well as ensuring the car was roadworthy enough to pass an MOT.

The car comes with a handful of invoices and MOT certificates, as well as notes of work carried out in the early 2000s to get the car roadworthy. It also comes with its V5 and a production record trace certificate from the Jaguar Heritage Trust.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

    Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?
