Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

The SL model range has hugely evolved over the years - producing some of the most beautiful Mercedes-Benz cars to date.

Originally launched in 1954, the SL was a two-seater roadster that has grown in popularity to become one of the most iconic models in Mercedes-Benz history, providing the perfect mixture of performance and luxury. Over the years, the cars were available as a soft-top convertible, later progressing with the addition of a removable hardtop. This was an excellent idea, perfect for the winter months, with the hardtop making it more like a coupe-bodied car. In 2002, Mercedes stepped up the game with the R230 SL, introducing a whole host of technological wizardry to the grand tourer. One of the main changes was the fully convertible hardtop roof that could be operated at the touch of a single button. You could be sitting at the traffic lights and within ~20 seconds, the roof would be down, ready to enjoy the sunshine. This feature alone proved a huge selling point for the luxurious German two-seater roadster.

The car comes to market after ~10 months of ownership after being inherited, and having covered a considerably low ~38,031 miles over its years, with under ~6,000 miles travelled in the last 5 years. It has a current MOT valid until 17.06.2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Juliet the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Mercedes is a really special car and was loved by all the family, especially with the roof down on a sunny day!

This car was originally the current owner Juliet's father's car, who used it for special occasions and days out. There have been no modifications or major work on it as Juliet's father preferred the original spec and style. Juliet lets us know "Having inherited the car, I have got to experience what my Dad once did. A smooth beautiful drive, with the added bonus of being able to have the roof down on a sunny day".

As time with the SL has begun to come to an end, Juliet tells us "I am truly sad to sell it, and not just for the sentimental value. But it’s not practical for a Mum of 2 with dogs! I hope it makes the next driver as happy as it made my Dad, and subsequently myself". Juliet will be available to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in Brilliant Silver - this really is the perfect colour choice for this silver arrow.

Wheels and Tyres

The Mercedes is fitted with 18" silver chrome five-spoke wheels with a Mercedes central badge. The wheels are in reasonable condition but would benefit from refurbishment to bring them back to a high standard, signs of curbing and lacquer peel.

The car is fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tyres, with the front set showing a tyre specification of 255/40 and the rear set 285/35. The tyres appear to have a good amount of tread left and have date codes from 2015 and 2019 respectively. For a more detailed view of the SL350's exterior and a closer inspection of the wheels and tyres, please refer to the photos and videos.

Bodywork

Looking over the SL350 during our visit, we noted that the car maintains good panel gaps, and both doors, the bonnet and the boot open and close smoothly. The automated hardtop works without concern and functions well. Once the roof is up, the windows lock into place without issue. There were a few spots of mould on the rear roof cover section, which would likely clean off with some attention to this panel.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The classic "Brilliant Silver" paint is even in finish across all panels, overall showing in lovely condition and compliments the Mercedes style perfectly. There were no signs of any major concerns with the coverage and the colour showed nicely in the light. We noted a couple of stone chips and a minor paint repair on the rear nearside quarter panel, although these areas didn't detract from the overall finish.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the SL350 looked in good condition, in line with the age; we didn't notice any cracks or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look in good condition too, matching the rest of the car. The front and rear lights looked well-maintained and well presented. Badges and motifs are all present and look good in their presentation. A level of detailing would be a benefit to bring up the overall presentation of the exterior.

The automatic hard top worked as it should and caused us no issues in its operation. The Mercedes has a glass panoramic sunroof as part of the optional extras from factory.

Interior

Smart leather seats provide luxury and comfort with bespoke Mercedes styling matching the exterior, the cabin of the SL is a lovely place to be.

Seats and Carpets

The Mercedes is kitted out with black leather interior, overall the seats look good given its ~20 years on the road. We didn't note any concerns with rips or tears to the seats and the passenger seat showed well.

The main carpet of the interior showed in a respectable condition, looking underneath the mats showed the car had no concerns especially in the rear section. Over in the boot the carpet areas looked in a similar condition. The interior carpet sections would benefit from a good level of cleaning to bring the standard of the cabin area up.

Dashboard

The dash and instrument cluster are clean and smart, with all the numbers appearing clear and legible. The odometer displayed ~38,031 miles at the time of our visit. The SL is specced with an Ash-tree wood dash inlay which again shows well.

The dials, switches, and controls all appeared to be in great condition, with surfaces appearing free from fogging or scratching. Our interior gallery section offers a closer look at the Mercedes dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The factory Mercedes steering wheel is equipped with a black leather grip and is in good condition, consistent with the mileage of this car. The automatic gear selector also appears to be in good condition.

Additional images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, are available in our Interior Gallery section - visit to see more details of what the SL has to offer.

Mechanics

The 3.7L V6 powers the rear wheels through a slick automatic gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

Upon starting the car, we noticed no issues with the engine, and it idled smoothly. Juliet mentioned that both the engine and gearbox operate very smoothly. We took the car out on local roads with Juliet to get a better feel for its performance. Throughout the drive, we shifted through the gears and saw how the car handles.

For a closer look underneath the SL350 and an overview of the engine bay, please refer to the mechanical video as well.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. The brakes felt great and were easily able to bring the Mercedes to a stop.

We cover the underside of the car in our 'Mechanical Gallery' section. Head over to our video section, where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

Whether the roof is up or down, the Mercedes SL350 delivers an incredibly fun and thrilling driving experience. The Mercedes started up without any issues to report. While on the road with Juliet, the car felt responsive and well-powered, easily handling the road and sweeping corners.

We didn't notice any unusual noises coming from either the engine or suspension. Our 'On the Road' video gives an overview of the car on some local roads and how it performs whilst driving.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and in good condition. Juliet mentioned that she's had no issues with the electrical elements of the car and confirmed everything working correctly. The central locking has recently had work actioned and so works without issue.

The SL is specced with a 6-disc CD changer, 3 position electric, heated seats, folding mirrors, cruise control, electric adjustable steering wheel and panoramic sun roof. The air con blows beautifully cold ready for the warm months.

History and Paperwork

The SL comes to market from ~10 month ownership after being inherited, and is a low miles example with ~38,031 recorded, under ~6,000 miles traveled in the last ~5 years.

The SL features a specification that includes: Parktronic system, universal telephone package, panoramic glass roof, electronic folding mirrors, Xenon headlamps, AMG wheels, spare wheel, heated screen wash system, anti-theft alarm, and keyless go.

Recent maintenance includes repair of the central locking unit in June 2024 to address a locking fault, costing over ~£1,800. The issue has been resolved successfully. The SL's battery was replaced in September 2019, and brake pads and turn signals were serviced in May 2004.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

I can see the wheels need a refurbish. Is there any evidence of cracks in them? Do they hold pressure? Additionally is there any evidence of leaks in the boot? Any smell? water stains etc?
