Introduction
Darren Rungasamy
The GT6's Italian styling, British character and engaging driving experience ticks every sports-car box.
Shortly after the launch of the open-top Spitfire in 1962, Triumph's competitive success with it led straight to the creation of the GT6. Improved aerodynamics by adding a fibreglass roof to race-tuned Spitfires allowed them to win class victories in the renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans races. Keen to capitalise on this success, Triumph produced the GT6, a fixed-head tin-top version of the Spitfire in 1966, powered by the twin-carb 2.0-litre straight-six from the Vitesse. Heavily leaning on the promotional aspect of the competition cars, the sleek fastback was quicker than an MGB and provided buyers with a little more exclusivity.
The body-on-frame construction proved to be a useful selling point, allowing full access to the engine and drive train components, making the GT6 favourable as a viable DIY proposition. Earning a reputation as a cut-price E-Type, the GT6's handsome Michelotti penned styling, 95 hp engine and improved handling over the Spitfire, could entertain as well as impress. With exemplary parts availability and plenty of specialists, the GT6 offers scope for upgrades too. Very much a grand tourer in its purest form, the GT6 has yet to reach the dizzying values of its TR and Stag brothers, although the scarcity and increasing appreciation of the GT6 mean its time isn’t far away.
We present you with a sought-after 1967 MK1 example finished in Signal Red with a black interior. It retains much of its original spec, with a few mechanical upgrades including an overdrive. Cleanly presented, with a few minor cosmetic tasks needing to be carried out, it has ~£7Ks worth of spending over the last 2 years, including two services and brake/suspension maintenance, and is straight-out-the-box ready.
Naturally road-tax and MOT exempt, it also comes with two keys, a heritage certificate and a file of invoices reaching back to 2008.
