Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The GT6's Italian styling, British character and engaging driving experience ticks every sports-car box.

Shortly after the launch of the open-top Spitfire in 1962, Triumph's competitive success with it led straight to the creation of the GT6. Improved aerodynamics by adding a fibreglass roof to race-tuned Spitfires allowed them to win class victories in the renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans races. Keen to capitalise on this success, Triumph produced the GT6, a fixed-head tin-top version of the Spitfire in 1966, powered by the twin-carb 2.0-litre straight-six from the Vitesse. Heavily leaning on the promotional aspect of the competition cars, the sleek fastback was quicker than an MGB and provided buyers with a little more exclusivity.

The body-on-frame construction proved to be a useful selling point, allowing full access to the engine and drive train components, making the GT6 favourable as a viable DIY proposition. Earning a reputation as a cut-price E-Type, the GT6's handsome Michelotti penned styling, 95 hp engine and improved handling over the Spitfire, could entertain as well as impress. With exemplary parts availability and plenty of specialists, the GT6 offers scope for upgrades too. Very much a grand tourer in its purest form, the GT6 has yet to reach the dizzying values of its TR and Stag brothers, although the scarcity and increasing appreciation of the GT6 mean its time isn’t far away.

We present you with a sought-after 1967 MK1 example finished in Signal Red with a black interior. It retains much of its original spec, with a few mechanical upgrades including an overdrive. Cleanly presented, with a few minor cosmetic tasks needing to be carried out, it has ~£7Ks worth of spending over the last 2 years, including two services and brake/suspension maintenance, and is straight-out-the-box ready.

Naturally road-tax and MOT exempt, it also comes with two keys, a heritage certificate and a file of invoices reaching back to 2008.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Juniad the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It is one of the most difficult things for me to sell and took me 3 years before I got this far.

Junaid has an impressive history with collectable classics and was captivated by the GT6’s elegant lines and impressive driving experience.

Since buying this GT6 in 2018, Junaid hasn’t experienced any trouble with it and has kept on top of the maintenance courtesy of trusted specialists.

Despite the considerable amount of spending and effort gone into the car, it's the lack of use in recent years due to work commitments is the main reason why Junaid is selling it.

Exterior

Beaming in Signal Red, the car poised styling and and curvy lines hints at its Anglo-Italian heritage.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels present well, with just some signs of age on a few of the spokes and rims.

It is fitted with a matching set of Kapsen tyres, all from 2022 and therefore in good shape with even wear.

Bodywork

The chassis and outriggers look solid, it has a decent floor pan with just mild signs of age noted on the underside. The wheel wells and boot floor also appear good, with minor surface wear noted on the front bulkhead.

The exterior presents well. The bonnet and doors are acceptably flush with the rest of the body and both doors were notably easy to open and close. There are no issues in terms of damage aside from a minor dent spotted on the near side rear wing. The bonnet shows some corrosion on the lower valance.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Signal Red paint is consistent and has good coverage, although we noted a couple of lighter patches on the boot lid and roof. The sunlight catches a little hazing on the paint too.

There are a few cosmetic imperfections across the car, mostly some micro blisters on some of the panels. There are a few under-paint imperfections around the nose of the car and we also spotted some minor blemishes on the front end of the roof and rear wing seams.

Overall it displays well though and has very little in terms of outdoor elements.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, with just a mild scuff noted on the passenger side of the windscreen.

The rear glass and scuttle panel rubber seals show splits but the door seals are in good order showing no suggestions of water ingress.

The lights and lens are in good condition.

The trim is all complete and appears to be correct for the model. There are mild signs of age-related pitting on some chrome parts and a minor dent on the front bumper.

Interior

Smartly presented inside, the snug cabin adds to the sporting experience.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are well presented, although the driver's side has a split and damage is noted on the top corner of the passenger seat.

The carpets are in good condition, with no signs of dampness.

The boot is neatly furnished.

Dashboard

The switches and controls were all demonstrated to work, they have a little age-related wear but nothing to distract. The dials are in good shape and all legible.

The door cards are good with just a little distortion and the headlining is in a good state.

There are a couple of minor tears spotted on the top of the dashboard padding and the facia veneer has a handful of minor fractures and has faded somewhat.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is free of damage and the gear lever and its gaiter are in good condition.

Mechanics

Mechanically in top order, the straight-six sounds sensational.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired up with no hesitation and ran well.

The car has seen very little use in recent months and subsequently, on full choke, we noticed sooty deposits coming from the stainless exhausts during the cold start. After leaving the engine running, followed by a 30-minute drive, everything had cleared and we also filmed the exhaust after that drive with no choke on.

The engine idled evenly, with no rattles. It is cleanly presented and there were no suggestions of fluid leaks. The car has a H&H Ignition Eazi-fit Electronic Ignition kit fitted and the carburettor has also been recently serviced.

The gearbox appears to function without any problems - Junaid hasn’t reported any issues with the gear change or clutch and confidently demonstrated its overdrive.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension dealt with the roads without any unwanted noises and the car rides with composure. There are mild signs of age on some of the rear components but it is fitted with new leaf and drop link and radius arm bushes.

The brakes were effective, pulling in a straight line with no negative feel or sponginess - they stop the car without any judders or grinding.

The Drive

The straight-six pulls strongly and sounds glorious, on tick over it is smooth and quiet but also revs freely without issues. We opened up the car a little and we were treated to the flexibility of the engine; it was responsive and cruised nicely.

The steering remained neutral and stable as we kept the car on the straights, and it became lighter as we increased the speed. Its road holding was good at urban speeds, and you could have a lot of fun if you fancy a breakaway on more challenging road.

There were no noticeable whines from the differential and no other unwanted noises heard from the wheels.

Electrics and Other

The car has been fitted with a CD/MP3 player which has been mounted on a bespoke centre console plate.

History and Paperwork

Recent attention to the mechanics include two invoices totalling ~£7k.

First registered in October 1967, the car also comes with its heritage certificate which documents that it was originally sold by A.G Wilson Ltd of Leeds. It's likely to have seen some level of restoration over the years and comes with a file of invoices, covering mostly maintenance, repair and mechanical parts going back to 2008. Highlights of the invoices include a new camshaft, distributor drive gear and timing chain in 2010 and a new alternator and welding in 2017.

The current owner has told us that he has spent around £10k since he bought it from a specialist in 2018. Junaid has serviced the car at least twice during that period, the most recent one carried out in 2023 and has travelled less than 100 miles since.

The car is tax and MOT-exempt, with the last MOT having been carried out in 2017, around 600 miles ago; it also comes with two keys, owner manual, parts catalogue and period brochure.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Junaid will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.
