Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Hot hatch styling, great handling and cool appeal - it’s hard to resist the 205 GTi.

The hot hatch is said to have killed the traditional sports car, and while the Peugeot 205 GTi wasn’t the first of the genre, it was certainly one of the most memorable. The 205 marked a departure from the conservative design approach of Peugeot's earlier small cars, embracing a bold new design that remained iconic until the introduction of the 206 in 1998.

The combination of the Pininfarina style, complemented by outstanding handling, supple ride in a practical compact hatchback endeared it to millions of people. Powered by the later ~115 BHP 1.6 engine, this version is often considered the more evenly balanced of the 205 GTi range, as the manageable power output best suited the chassis.

This example is a bit of a rarity having one owner from new. The car is complete with a great amount of paperwork including the original invoice, all MOTs, tax discs, service history, and receipts. The car has retained much of its originality throughout with some major recommission works carried out in 2019. These works included; radiator and heater matrix replacement, silicone hose kit fitted, rear beam axle and shock absorbers replaced with Bilstein units, rear brake shoes and cylinders renewed, front brake callipers rebuilt and discs replaced, the front struts were also replaced with Bilstein versions and anti-roll bar drop links replaced.

It has a current MOT valid until October 2024, is in lovely original condition, and has been stored in a dry garage since purchase. Despite being on the road for over ~35 years, it maintains its striking appearance and is undoubtedly worthy of close inspection by both enthusiasts and collectors.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Andy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

My favourite car, it's the reason I've kept it so long!

The car was bought new in November 1988 from Bassett's Peugeot dealership in Swansea by Andy, the owner - Andy tells us, "I have all the paperwork including the original invoice, all MOTs, tax discs, service history, and bills".

Andy went on to say, "In 1989 I had a company car so until 2017 it was used exclusively by my wife mostly for short local journeys and in that time, it has always been garaged. In 2017 my wife had another car and the Peugeot was taken off the road during the winters that followed".

Despite the 205 being Andy's pride and joy, he tells us; "I’m in my 70s now and the thought of maintaining the car now is less appealing – I don’t drive it enough and it is time for someone else to get some pleasure out of driving it – it is still a wonderful ‘pointy’ car to drive, unmolested by air bags, power steering, electric windows, and the electrical noises of modern cars!".

Exterior

An iconic hot hatch that epitomises the spirit of '80s automotive design, renowned for its agile handling, spirited performance, and distinctive nostalgic style.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 14" speed-line alloys finished in silver, the wheels appear in good condition with no signs of any concerning damage from our observation, just a few small notes of kerbing.

The 205 is fitted with Pirelli Cinturato P1 and Pirelli P5000 Drago - the tyre spec showed with 185/60 all round. These appear to be in good condition, dated from 2006/2015 with a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

Looking over the GTi on our visit, the car maintains good visual panel gaps and both doors, bonnet and the boot open and close smoothly. We didn't note any major dings to the panelling although there was a notable scuff mark to the offside front trim and some marks to the door edges.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The stylish silver paint coat is even in finish across all the panels, overall showing in good condition and compliments the car well. There were no signs of any major concerns with the coverage and the colour showed nicely in the light.

There were a few stone chips noted to the bumper, front side panels and rear quarters. We also noted a mark to the front quarter panel.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the Peugeot looked in good condition, in line with the age; we didn't notice any cracks or discolouration on our visit. The glass sections were etched with the original number plate registration. Window seals look in good condition too when looking over the car.

The trim and seals are all in place with GTi branding logo and relevant Peugeot badging present. We did note a scuff to the offside front trim section.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

The interior of the 205 GTi is beautifully original, offering a nostalgic step back to the late '80s, where the roots of this car originate from - the quality reflects some of automotive designer Paul Bracq's finest work.

Seats and Carpets

The GTi is kitted out with red and black striped fabric interior. We didn't note any concerns with rips or tears to the front or rear seats. The rear seating section also showed in nice condition.

The main carpet of the interior showed in a great condition, and so too did the mats.

Over in the boot the carpet areas reflected the standard of the front.

We cover the cabin area of the 205 in further detail in our interior review video.

Dashboard

All original, the black dashboard appears to be in lovely condition. The top of the dashboard is well-preserved, showing no signs of splits, cracks, or warping. The odometer displayed ~83,733 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls are well maintained; all the surfaces appear clean and clear, with no fogging or scratching. We did not observe any issues with warning lights when starting the car from cold or during our road assessment.

Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the 205 GTi's dashboard - head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A distinctive sports GTi steering wheel is installed in this cockpit, boasting a lovely black leather finish that matches well with the rest of the interior. There were no major concerns observed and the driver's area showed its history well.

The gear stick displayed only minimal signs of wear related to its age, with no visible damage, maintaining a lovely condition. The handbrake also appeared to be in great condition.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

A perky engine with plenty of power and precise steering are all well-known characteristics of the 205 GTi.

Engine and Gearbox

Andy reports that the car starts from cold without any issues and drives well, with its smooth 5-speed manual gearbox working well as demonstrated in our On the Road video.

We took the car on some local roads with the current owner to gain a better understanding of what this vehicle offers. During the drive, we went through the motions, shifting through the gears in the GTi and receiving an overview from Andy's perspective on the car's performance and mechanical history.

Please take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold and for a closer look underneath the Peugeot, as well as an overview of the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

Most of the suspension has been renewed over Andy's ownership including the rear beam axle and front struts with Bilstein front struts and rear dampers. The ride was a little firm and sporty, but didn't pose any issue on the road.

The brakes felt great and were easily able to bring the 205 to a stop, having been renewed with rebuilt front callipers and new seals.

We cover the underside of the car in our 'Mechanical Gallery' section. Head over to our video section, where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

The Peugeot felt comfortable on our test drive, riding with no issues through our journey on the road. No shakes were observed or issues were heard on the road and there were seamless changes through the gears. The clutch was replaced during Andy's ownership too.

Overall, a really smooth and enjoyable ride where we heard no unwanted noises or anything that caused us a concern.

Our 'On the Road' video gives an overview of the car on some local roads and how it performs whilst driving.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and in good condition. Andy mentioned that he's had no issues with the electrical elements of the car and confirmed everything working correctly.

The tachometer, oil pressure, fuel and coolant temp gauges were functioning without concern. The car has a Phillips tape player stereo system fitted which we tested as working on our drive out in the car. The digital clock was also working when we visited the car.

History and Paperwork

A very desirable 205 GTi 1.6, one owner since new, highly original spec and fewer than ~2,000 miles covered in the last ~5 years - this one is worth a closer look.

The 205 GTi is a real rarity in today's market given the low ownership and low mileage for its age. Not only that, but carrying a great amount of service history, the Peugeot is able to tell its own story based on its paperwork alone.

The paperwork gallery gives a full overview about the works carried out but most significantly, in 2019, it had the following work carried out; radiator and heater matrix replaced, silicone hose kit fitted, rear beam axle and shock absorbers replaced with Bilstein units, rear brake shoes and cylinders renewed, front brake callipers rebuilt and discs replaced, the front struts were replaced with Bilstein versions and anti-roll bar drop links replaced.

Since 2017 it has been used in the summer only but has only done around ~200 miles per year. The car has been MOT'd every year and the current MOT expires in October 2024.

The car is a ‘survivor’ in that it is completely original. The tailgate was repaired and resprayed after a minor accident but otherwise, Andy tells us the paint is all original.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Why have the dash and all exterior plastics been replaced with black ones, from a later phase 2 car, instead of the dark grey originals?
