Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A Bertone styled masterpiece with a genuine racing car engine.

The Dino had an auspicious start to its life. Created to house a Formula Two racing engine, Ferrari needed to homologate that engine by producing 500 of the 2.0-litre Dino V6 aluminium block engines to make it eligible for motorsports. With the Ferrari factory unable to produce such a large number of engines at the time, they leaned on Fiat, which was to become the first significant corporation between the two companies.

Unveiled in 1966, the elegant and poised Bertone-designed coupe was notable for its influence on car design trends well into the 1970s. Pitched as the flagship Fiat sports car, a total of 3,670 2.0-litre coupes were produced, making it, relatively speaking, the most popular Ferrari-powered creation of its era. Not surprisingly with a soundtrack to match its graceful styling, the Dino has gone on to become a much sought-after classic.

This 1968 example has been sourced from France and has been in the UK since 2013. A solid and complete car, which has retained much of its originality, it has seen an engine rebuild and over £8,000 has been spent in the last 8 years. A solid proposition with a strong engine - it will need some recommissioning to make perfect, but it presents itself as a great opportunity to obtain a decent example of one of the most stylish coupes of the 1960s.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Hussien the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We took on the car as it just looks gorgeous from any angle.

Hussien, the current owner, bought the car about five years ago in 2019, back then he intended to restore the car and planned to start the work before the start of the subsequent pandemic.

Fully operational at the time with a MOT, the car was kept in storage during these times. Fast forward a few years and the Dino's recommissioning still hasn't started, and more recently Hussien has concluded that the funds from the sale of the Dino are best spent on getting some of his other cars up to scratch, and so contacted us to find the car a new owner.

Exterior

A solid bodyshell with evidence of previous upkeep, the Bertone lines merge to produce one of the most balanced-styled cars of its era.

Wheels and Tyres

The 14-inch Cromodora alloys are in good shape.

The car is fitted with a full set of Yokohama tyres, all dating from 2005 but appear to have good tread.

Bodywork

The car is looks structurally positive as you can see in the images / videos.

Most of the issues regarding the exterior metalwork appear to be cosmetic. The front valance and lower section of the panels show signs of age, where corrosion has started to form. We also spotted a few small bubbles emerging on the roof close to the top of the windscreen and side gutters. There's also a spot on the off-side base of the A-pillar and a few blemishes on the passenger doors.

Aside from a minor dent on the nearside door, the car is generally free of knocks. The panel fit is flush, with just the near-side door being slightly uneven. All of the doors open and close with ease.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint finish has a decent coverage, with an evenly matched hue. There are a few minor marks in places but the car is generally free of roadwear or stone chips.

The offside rear wheel arch and nearside passenger door have paint cracks.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears to be in decent condition, free of chips or cracks and no notable lamination damage. Their seals are in good condition. The rear lenses show their age somewhat but are free of cracks.

The window chrome trim is complete with minor signs of age spotted in places. The door handles and both bumpers show tarnishing.

The car is currently missing its windscreen wipers and lower side trim chrome finishers.

Interior

In need of some cosmetic attention, the cabin is a great place to be and still oozes style.

Seats and Carpets

The cloth seats show signs of their age, particularly the driver's side, which will need a refurb due to its loose stitching, but both front seats retain decent support.

The tops of the rear seat are damaged as you can see in the images.

The carpeting is dry, complete and should clean up nicely. The car also comes with a decent set of Dino motiv red mats.

The boot is in decent shape, with no signs of water ingress.

Dashboard

The top of the dashboard has several fractures, but the separate facia padding is in decent shape. The veneer finish has some flatness but importantly is free of cracks. The switches and controls show age-related wear but were not tested. The dials are legible and appear to be operational. The centre console is also complete but marked with a few drill holes and a fracture.

The headlining is free of damage, the visor section shows damage.

The door cards are well mounted but do display a few marks and rips.

The rear parcel shelf will need replacing, but the interior trim appears to be complete.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden Nardi steering wheel is in good condition, the gear lever leather gaiter will need replacement.

Mechanics

The V6 unit is a well proven and strong engine, and sounds sensational in full song.

Engine and Gearbox

The car starts up without hesitancy or significant smoke. The car's paperwork suggests it received a documented top-end engine rebuild around 2011 followed by a carb rebuild in 2015, which adds confidence to the durability of the engine. It idles smoothly with no knocking or rumbling and the car didn’t leak any fluid during our visit. The V6 has not been cleaned for a while due to its storage, but presents well and is free of oil and water seepage. The radiator and hoses appeared to be in decent condition too.

The car engages gears without any issues, the clutch is operational and has a decent biting point.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension components looked sound, visually. The braking system will need an overhaul due to a non-operational master cylinder. The discs have a sheen of surface corrosion due to the car's lack of use, but didn't bind or squeal when the car was moved.

The handbrake is working / effective.

The Drive

Due to the braking issue, which does work but takes some effort to stop the car, we couldn’t road test the car. However, it has been well used in the past, with evidence of classic car runs in the hands of its previous owner.

With the engine health on the day looking and sounding encouraging, an independent mechanic has also confirmed the engine's positive running condition. It drives without any unwanted clunking or transmission noises at low speeds, with no knocking heard from the steering.

Electrics and Other

The car comes with several litres of specific transmission fluid.

History and Paperwork

It has a documented engine rebuild in 2011 and almost £8k worth of invoices.

First registered in France in April 1968, it was imported in 2013 by its owner who appeared to have owned it since the mid 2000s. While in the UK, it saw almost £8,000 worth of mechanical and maintenance work, as well as a partial floor pan restoration and carb rebuild in 2015.

The most recent invoice is for a service in 2017. The car also has documentation of a 2011 top-end rebuild carried out in France at the cost of 2,500 EUROS, with copies of photos suggesting it has driven around 5,000 km since then.

It comes with a folder full of invoices, French and UK registration documents, a CD ROM of a workshop manual, one key and a letter from the Fiat Dino Register confirming the car's authenticity.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hussien will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.
