With sharp lines and a powerful fuel-injected 2.5-litre engine, the Triumph TR6 is quintessential British motoring.

The TR6 was built between 1968 and 1976. The first bodies were built in Liverpool, and the '6' was the best-seller of the TR range. Of the ~91,850 produced, only ~8,370 were sold in the UK. The frame, engine, running gear, body tub, and door were very similar to the Michelotti-styled TR5. Karmann of Germany restyled the design of the front and rear of the car, yet rumours claim the squared-off tail design was a Michelotti prototype.

With just three previous keepers, this lovely 1973 Triumph TR6 has been with Ray for over ~40 years.

Meet the owner

After ~44 years, it's a tough decision to let the TR6 go, but it's time to let someone else have the pleasure.

Ray used the Triumph TR6 for ~25 years before treating it to an extensive ~£14,000 restoration - most parts are listed in the paperwork section spread over various invoices.

This restoration and some subtle upgrades gave the TR6 a new lease of life and made it nicer to drive with power steering and a lighter clutch, enabling Ray to enjoy the TR6 thoroughly.

Ray told us that driving on a winding country road with the hood down, flitting between third and overdrive, and listening to the exhaust has been a real joy.

Unfortunately due to arthritis in his hands and wrists, the car is getting harder to drive for Ray, he hopes it goes to someone who will enjoy the car as much as he has.

Exterior

A British motoring icon from the 1970s, the TR6 boasts a sharper front and rear end; though the middle remains true to its TR4 roots.

Wheels and Tyres

The steel wheels are finished in silver and look in good order, with just a few minor scratches to the faces.

A set of chrome trims and TR6 centre caps are fitted and are in excellent condition.

The Kumho tyres are matching and have plenty of tread remaining.

Bodywork

Looking around the TR6, the bodywork is in excellent shape - all of the panels appear to align correctly, with equal visual gaps between them.

Paint

Finished in what’s thought to be the original colour of Mimosa Yellow, it is a testament to Ray keeping it in such excellent condition over the ~19 years since it has been repainted.

Glass and Trim

All windows appear in good condition, with no noticeable scratches or damage. The fabric roof fits tightly, and the plastic rear windows are in good order with no splits or cracks.

The chrome work around the car has a bright finish with no tarnishing, and for those who want to venture out on a summer evening, LED headlights have been fitted, bringing improved visibility.

Interior

A retrimmed interior retains all the original charm of the TR6.

Seats and Carpets

The seats have been retrimmed to match the originals, with the added extra of ‘TR6’ being embroidered into the headrests. These are in excellent condition with no real signs of heavy use.

The carpets have been replaced and are in good condition throughout the cabin and also inside the boot.

The spare wheel is present with a matching tyre.

Dashboard

The black vinyl dashboard is in good order, with just a couple of very minor marks on the bottom edge. The wooden fascia presents well, and the instruments within it are said to work correctly, with the odometer showing a reading of ~93,520 miles at our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a leather-bound Moto-Lita steering wheel, this is in good condition with no signs of excessive wear, as is the leather gear knob.

Mechanics

The 2.5-litre straight-six, fuel-injected engine produces a truly captivating soundtrack.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with the original 2.5-litre straight-six fuel-injected engine, this was rebuilt ~200 miles ago and has been upgraded with a T5 camshaft, ported and polished stage-2 cylinder head, and replaced injectors. The 2.5-litre fires up after a couple of attempts, and the oil pressure is nice and healthy. It sounds fantastic and runs with no issues reported.

A TR4A clutch has been fitted to the TR6, making it feel much lighter and easier to drive around town. The four-speed gearbox has a smooth change with overdrive fitted, which works correctly.

Suspension and Brakes

Another improvement made to the car is power steering, which makes the TR6’s steering super light, and again, driving in a city or town is a welcome improvement. Ray kept all the original parts so it can be reverted if the next owner wanted to.

On the road, the relatively newly fitted Gaz shock absorbers provide a firm but comfortable ride, as you would expect from a two-seater sports car. No knocks or bangs were noticed on our test drive, and the car came to a stop in a straight line with no issues reported.

The Drive

As far as 1970s British two-seater classics go, the Triumph TR6 is up there with some of the best. Not only is it a fantastic-looking car, but the 2.5-litre engine has fuel injection, which helps improve economy and performance, not to mention the additional upgrades to the engine, steering, and suspension.

Electrics and Other

Coming from the 1970s, there isn’t an enormous amount of electrics to worry about, but what is there is reported to work correctly and is in good condition with minimal signs of wear to the lettering.

History and Paperwork

A healthy collection of invoices shows a considerable amount has been spent over the ~44-year ownership.

For ~44 years, the Triumph TR6 has been well cared for, as evidenced by its overall condition and paperwork collection, not to mention the ~£14,000 restoration carried out in the mid-2000s. Ray told us a new ex-works chassis was fitted by Mal Stewart in Cardiff for ~£3,770 in 1992, the invoice is in the gallery below. The car was originally painted in Mimosa when new and was resprayed in BL Mimosa, Ray said this is a slightly different shade.

The engine output has been increased from the original 125BHP by a camshaft regrind to T5 spec, sports exhaust manifold, larger throttle bodies and electronic ignition. A hydraulic power steering kit has also been fitted but all parts retained to revert to standard if wished. Extreme care was taken in rebuilding the body to protect it from rusting.

The car is in lovely condition and simply ready to jump straight in and enjoy!

Hi mate, following on from the last message over cold starting, my last one cost me a lot of money to get to the bottom of the problem. The other problem was that it was even harder to start when run up and hot Does this start OK when hot ?

Hi Ray.
Any idea why it should be a bad starter? In the video it appears that there is no fuel present when cold, surely the Bosch pump should supply fuel directly to the injection pump? Has it always been this way?

Hi Ray, just wondered if you have made any recent changes to fuel lines etc, to cope with the ethanol in petrol? Also, what “brand” of fuel injection system did you put in please?
