Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

A rugged yet refined classic, combining off-road capability with strong performance and iconic Range Rover style.

The original Range Rover was revolutionary when it debuted in 1970, offering a blend of rugged off-road capability and refined on-road comfort. It created a new category of vehicles that could handle rough terrain while delivering a premium driving experience. Over the years, the Range Rover evolved into a symbol of sophistication and adventure, catering to those who demanded both luxury and durability. By 1991, the Range Rover had become synonymous with high-end versatility, and the Vogue Turbo D took this to another level. What made this model unique was its turbocharged diesel engine, which provided superior torque and fuel efficiency compared to its petrol counterparts, making it ideal for both long-distance cruising and tough off-road conditions.

This car comes to market from ~33 year family ownership. It has been dry-stored in a barn for the last ~10 years, and kept in a garage whilst owned by our vendor's father-in-law for the ~23 years previously, has low mileage for its age, 2 former keepers, and 7 Rolls-Royce service stamps in its record. It also comes with its original driver's folio, 2 sets of keys.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Andrea the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's a real workhorse and has served me well, it goes everywhere and anywhere I need!

The current owners, Andrea and husband John, lets us know a bit of the history of the car "In August 1991, John's father, Peter, replaced his existing company V8 Range Rover with a new turbo diesel model. The old V8 was lovely, but on a long journey, it needed a lot of refuelling, and we became increasingly environmentally conscious". Andrea goes on to tell us more about the history of the Turbo D: "At the time of getting the car, my father-in-law had bought around 17 acres from the farm next door to his home—with land to plant trees as part of the National Forest. The diesel Vogue had better front ground clearance, and I think he envisaged a comfortable Land Rover for ‘agricultural’ duties".

For the past ~10 years, the Land Rover Range Rover has stood inside wearing a cover after being used as a wedding car for both of her daughters. Andrea says, "We kept it on the road for quite a while, but the barn where the Range is stored is going to be needed for an extension to my daughter's business. We're not going to have the room for our beloved Landy, so it needs to find a new home". Andrea will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The iconic, boxy silhouette is emphasised by a high stance and large windows that highlight visibility and a sense of adventure.

Wheels and Tyres

The Range Rover has heavy-duty 16" wheels finished in grey. These were in good condition, with just a few minor paint chips. There were no signs of any concerning damage during our visit, only normal wear from use.

The car is fitted with Michelin 4x4 tyres on both the front and rear, with a tyre spec of 205/80 all around. However, there are several cracks visible on the sidewalls due to the age and long term dry storage.

Bodywork

While inspecting the Range Rover during our visit, we found that overall, the car maintains good panel gaps, and all doors, bonnet, and boot open and close smoothly. On closer inspection of the underside, both outer and inner sills appeared to be in fairly condition overall. The boot floor showed a replacement section when viewed from underneath the car. The chassis, in general, was in good condition underneath. The rear wheel arch inners appear to have been replaced during the Land Rover's life, though the right-hand wheel arch had started to detach slightly from the main body.

Some notable corrosion was found on the top of the offside wing, with bubbling above the back of the engine. On the top of the nearside wing, we noted a small rust hole. It is worth noting that these Land Rover models typically show signs of corrosion, though compared to other examples, this vehicle did not present any major concerns in comparison.

We’ve provided more detailed observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a comprehensive view of what’s on offer, and to assess the car’s condition for yourselves.

Paint

The Range Rover's "Alpine White" paintwork has an even finish across all panels and is overall in good condition. We did note some signs of stone chips across the exterior, though nothing out of the ordinary for a car with over 30 years of travel on and off the road.

The images are taken from various angles to show the car as you would see it in person. Please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass sections on the Land Rover were in good condition, consistent with the car's age; we didn't notice any cracks or discolouration during our visit. The window seals looked respectable, and we noted no concerning issues with the sunroof.

The front Land Rover badge, front Range Rover branding, rear Range Rover, and Turbo D decals all appeared intact. Exterior trim sections were present and correct, though showing some wear. Check out the exterior gallery and review video for a more comprehensive overview. We guide you through all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself, allowing you to see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

Rugged practicality combines with understated elegance, period upholstery and polished wood accents create a comfortable atmosphere.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats are in great condition, and the rear seats show no cause for concern. Neither the front nor rear seating areas display any major damage. All seats are finished in a smart grey fabric. The front centre console opens and closes smoothly. The armrests in the rear fold and stow without issue.

The Land Rover is equipped with heavy-duty rubber matting, which shows no major wear. Underneath these sections, the carpet is in good condition with no issues to the floor. The carpeted areas of the spacious boot show some wear, although nothing overly concerning. We did notice a couple of marks on the interior roof lining and a few marks on the door cards. We cover the cabin area of the Land Rover in more detail in our interior review video.

Dashboard

The grey dash appears to be in excellent condition, free from any significant marks. The dashboard presented very well, with no visible concerns or imperfections during our visit to the car.

All the numbers and dials on the dash were clear and legible, showing approximately 57,197 miles on the clock at start-up. The gauges, switches, and controls all seemed to be in great condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratches. Our interior gallery section provides a closer look at the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A grey leather Range Rover steering wheel is in place, in lovely condition, with no signs of major damage or wear.

In the centre section, the manual gear selector and diff lock, with low, normal, and high ratio options, showed no concerns. Additional images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, are available in our "Interior Gallery" section for more details on what the Vogue has to offer.

Mechanics

A true off-road icon, powered by a 2.5L turbocharged engine, producing ~111BHP and a generous amount of torque, great both on and off the road.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine appears to be in reasonable visual condition. We didn't see any concerning issues or hear any unusual noises when out in the Land Rover. We noted no issues from start-up either, which we've highlighted in the cold start section of the "Mechanical Review" video.

Take a look at our mechanical review video, where we cover the engine start-up and take the Land Rover out around private land to learn more about the car.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or other issues with the suspension while on the country lanes, and it gave us no concerns regarding its performance or handling.

The brakes brought the car to a halt in a straight line, with no juddering reported through the pedal. The stopping power and control felt great, worked as expected, and were in line with our expectations. We cover the underside of the car in our 'Mechanical Gallery' section.

The Drive

Great handling in the Land Rover was observed, and it showed no issues while driving. We noted no pulling from the steering, juddering, or unwanted movements.

The Vogue is perfect for both urban driving and adventurous journeys, making it a standout in the world of 4x4s.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and in great condition. We tested the electric sunroof during our visit and found no concerns with its operation or function.

The Land Rover is equipped with a cassette player and radio system. The cabin blowers were working well, although there were some leaves in the vents that would benefit from being cleaned out. The car is supplied with additional spare parts, including drive belts and touch-up paint. Andrea told us that she has had no issues with the electrical components of the car and, to the best of her knowledge, everything is working as it should.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~33 family ownership, the car has 2 former keepers and has been in long term dry storage for ~10 years.

The Land Rover carries seven Rolls-Royce servicing stamps as part of its service history. At the end of 1993, as part of his retirement package from Rolls-Royce, Andrea's father-in-law Peter bought the car and kept it until he was no longer fit to drive, it was always garaged in Peter's ownership. It then came to Andrea's home in Shropshire in January 2014, where Peter’s grandchildren still have a soft spot for the old Landy. Andrea and her family had previously arranged for work to be completed on the original wheels, as well as MOT recommendations for new shock absorbers in 2014 and spring replacements in 2016. Additional rear wheel arch repairs were also completed under Andrea's ownership. The top part of the tailgate was replaced shortly after Andrea's father-in-law retired.

In May 2012, the brake pipes were replaced with copper pipes and flexi hoses, welding repairs were carried out on the rear outer sills, both rear outer wheel arches, offside rear inner wheel arch, and boot floor. The Land Rover was undersealed, and a full interior and exterior valet was completed. The combined costs of this work totalled ~£2,000. New glow plugs were installed in January 2012. A new remote alarm lock and battery were fitted in July 2008. A full overview of the history behind the Land Rover is included in the paperwork gallery section.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Andre, John. Is that the original diesel engine? If not what engine is it?

It is the original engine. It hasn’t been driven a lot since father in law died and not a lot in the last few years he owned it. Hence the true mileage. Very little has been replaced as you will see in our write up. Thanks
