Introduction

Matt Nolan
Consigner Photographer

This MGC featuring a 3.0L straight-six up front is a more brawny version of its four pot MGB sibling.

This particular example is a very late model, registered and sold in 1970 when production actually ceased in 1969 (roughly 4,500 made). Today, these cars look great and they are the epitome of a classic car that beams through every angle.

David's example here looks great; Old English White, wired wheels, chrome work and that twin-carb engine; the MGC is a great little sunny day runaround. Backed up with a wealth of history and with David owning the car for the last 20 years - he has been a great custodian. The new owner has the opportunity to apply some minor touches of TLC that will really make this car shine.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matt after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After buying 20 years ago, I have loved using the MGC with my family ever since.

David has loved using the car as a run around with his loved ones, heading up to Ireland in some years and really enjoying the classic. He tells us of a tale where he used to get the car regularly serviced by the owner of G.F. Beck, Pembrokeshire; a mechanic who would take a trip to Le Mans every year to help out with their private race cars. He also made friends with other mechanics who helped him maintain the car well. Also being a member of the MG Car Club, Pembrokeshire up until 2017, all MOTs, invoices etc of his ownership can be found further down.

David states the car still drives great today and will provide the new owner with much joy. For 17 years he has been living in Wales now and has started to use the car more infrequently, providing the new owner with an opportunity to get the miles in this beautiful Old English truly deserves.

Exterior

In its original factory Old English White, David had the car resprayed in 2017.

Wheels and Tyres

15" wired wheels are looking in good condition in line with the car's age and sit on a mixture of Vredstein Sprint Classic (front) and Firestone F-560 with 165/15/86 profile. A decent set of tyres – preferably 185-section rather than the standard 165s are a good option when thinking about handling.

With a few minor bits of rust on some wheels, the new owner has the chance to correct this part of the MG. The car comes with a recently added brand new spare wheel and tyre from MGOC.

Bodywork

To accommodate the larger engine compared to the MGB, significant revisions to the size of the engine bay and floor pan were made. Although this did not change the style of the car, some small hints such as the distinctive bulge in the bonnet are visible to the passionate eye.

We saw no dents or bumps across the well designed classic and all shut lines look good. Testing the doors on our visit, all was in working; satisfying order.

Paint

As mentioned, David commissioned a respray on the car in 2017, please see the invoices.

The Old English White is generally in excellent condition across the car and shining nicely. We noticed the usual stone chips and some flicks of paint along some edges of the boot and bonnet, please see the photos for the full condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

All are in good condition across the car.

The chrome work looks great and kept well over the years.

You will notice in the photos that the passenger window is slightly further up and extends the fitting into the hood. This is not an issue, it was wound up a bit too high - simply adjusting down on the inside rectifies and there is nothing wrong with the fit or door shut.

Interior

A lot of the interior remains original - it's a lovely place to be and truly takes you back in time.

Seats and Carpets

The original black seats look excellent for the age of the car - 50 years old now!

Still looking comfortable, they will provide the new owner with some satisfaction for sure. A little rust under the floor pan looks like no problem at all if cared for correctly.

Dashboard

Keeping with the black theme, everything looks crisp and legible. A simple speed / tachometer extends beyond to the fuel tank and pressure gauges.

Having been regularly cleaned and serviced throughout David's ownership everything looks good here.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both original to the car and looking as if enjoyed, they are in good condition.

The 4-speed gear stick operates the all-synchromesh gears.

Mechanics

The twin-carb engine sounds so smooth in our video.

Engine and Gearbox

BMC C series 2912cc 6 cylinder inline engine produced 145hp in its day. We started up the car in our usual video and noticed a clean sounding engine that has clearly been cared for through David and with the trust of professional classic car engineers every year - you can see by the invoices this car really has been well maintained by David.

The all-synchromesh 4-speed transmission has overdrive enabled on 3rd and 4th gear for easier driving.

Suspension and Brakes

Independent front by wishbone and adjustable torsion bar with a rear live axle for that rear-wheel-drive harmony. Underneath the car looks great and can be shown in the invoices to have been clean regularly.

Girling front disc and rear wheel drum with vacuum servo assistance have been serviced regularly throughout David's ownership and show no advisories in the last MOT. There is some surface rust on the brakes as David informs us he's got caught in the rain a couple of times but is in good working order.

The Drive

David informs us after driving close to 20,000 miles in his ownership from 2000, the car still drives great. He clearly enjoys looking after this classic convertible.

There are no abnormalities to discuss in terms of driving capacity and attention surely focuses on how good this Old English White looks on the road.

Electrics and Other

Many invoices show mechanical / electrical repairs and maintenance around the car such as new front lights being fitted in 2012 and spark plugs changed regularly throughout David's time with the car. We have been informed everything on the car works as expected but are waiting to hear back about the radio.

Mechanically, the soft top functions as expected, but as mentioned earlier, correcting the overextended window is manageable but can be rectified by the new owner.

History and Paperwork

Constant care and passionate ownership has kept this car running smoothly through David's 20 years of ownership.

On top of the MOTs and other invoices, David tended to carry out of a full service of the vehicle regularly. He has been a member of the MG Car Club, Pembrokeshire in the past and has enjoyed driving with fellow enthusiasts over the years.

There are some handwritten service records seen below in the gallery that do not have mileage counts but have dates. An interesting article David saw buying the MGC in 1999 can also be found further describing the condition and provenance the car had back then. Since bought, 20,000 miles have been driven bringing the total to the milestone of 'going round the clock' - currently reading 601 upon our visit just before the auction.

What did you think of the service?
I am thinking of selling my 1974 MG BGT, in white. Full picture history, MOT’s, Bill’s etc.
Did you get the price you wanted?
I was also thinking of selling through ‘Enjoying MG’ monthly mag. But I don’t know which would be the best. I would like your view.

Are the floor pans just surface rust. Was the water was from the heater box. And has it been repairs?

i have talked to my mechanic & he says the rust is only surface rust & also the water did not come from the heater or any other possible unit inside the car.
