An original legend, the Pony car, the Mustang was often imitated but arguably never bettered!

Created as an affordable, compact and stylish performance car, the Ford Mustang was first seen in 1964. It quickly rose to the top of the US sales charts thanks to its many personalisation possibilities and ability to appeal to younger consumers. Referred to as a "Pony Car" due to its compact and sporty nature, the Mustang made a name for itself in road and rally races too, where its speed, strength, and agility enhanced the car's credibility. The Mustang was developed over its lifetime and to date, and remains the only "Pony Car" still in production, albeit in a highly evolved form. The early incarnations have become sought after, thanks to their handsome, simple styling and undiluted appeal. The Mustang offers a slice of Americana with sensible road manners, excellent parts availability and a huge amount of credibility.

This 1965 Dearborn-built coupe was originally ordered in "Wimbledon White" with a blue vinyl interior, 289 cu in (5.0-litre) small block V8 engine. Options include a Cruise-O-Matic (Automatic) gearbox, Rally Pac Clock/Tachometer option, power steering, reversing lights and grill-mounted fog lights. Imported into the UK in 2009, it was renovated by a Mustang enthusiast, who spent ~£5,000 mostly on the engine and structure. Kept in dry storage with occasional use over the last ~2 years with our vendor, it comes with a current V5, import documents and a file full of invoices.

Meet the owner

Despite being almost 60 years old, the Mustang never fails to grab attention!

Teresa formed a connection with US muscle cars having grown up Stateside, particularly falling for the styling, power and romanticism of the Mustang. A friend of Teresa's who is a collector of US cars offered her the Mustang in 2022.

Sadly due to work commitments and the resultant lack of use, she has reluctantly decided to sell the car. Teresa believes that while this solid example is still in good working order, it would benefit more use and some TLC. Exterior

A solid base to build on, the car retains much of its originality.

Wheels and Tyres

The iconic Cragar S/S wheels set the car off nicely, and while they show light signs of age they are in pretty good shape.

The BF Goodrich tyres with painted white text are under ten years old and look to have plenty of even tread. A new valve has been recently fitted on one. View the image gallery to see the wheels.

Bodywork

The body is free of dent damage, and minimal signs of corrosion on the panels. The body panels are cohesive and fit flush to the body with acceptable panel gaps. All of the doors open and close with ease. As seen in the photos, there is a light coating of surface corrosion on the front underside due to lack of use but this is counterbalanced by the solid treated frame rails, wheel wells and floor pan. The boot floor and engine bay are in good shape too. The rear offside section of the sill has a little corrosion but appears not to have penetrated too far.

Paint

The "Wimbledon White" paint finish has flattened with age but offers a decent coverage. The roof and C-pillars have a few colour mismatches and we spotted colour inconsistencies on the top rear corner panels and windscreen scuttle. There are a few paint patch/touch-ups and the odd door edge chip, but its generally free of road wear. It still presents well but would probably require a new coat of paint to make it perfect.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good order, with no significant damage or marks. The rubber seals are in good shape, with no suggestions of leaks. The headlamps look good and the rear lenses show a few small marks.

The chrome trim has lasted well, there are mild signs of age on the rear lamps bezels, door mirrors, quarter lights and bumpers but all the chrome fittings appear to be complete including the badging. The offside rear bumper corner has an uneven fit, but otherwise, all are mounted straight.

Interior

The interior of the car appears to be completely original and looks all the better for it.

Seats and Carpets

The blue vinyl seats look good. There is a split seam on the driver's seat and a few surface marks on the rear backrest, but overall they present well. The door cards are presentable, with a little loose trim on the driver side noted and its window winder is stiff.

The carpets and mats appear to be the original factory fittings. The carpets show age-related wear and fade but are complete and free of dampness. The headlining is in good shape.

Dashboard

Patina is evident on the metal sections of the dashboard. The top padding is free of splits or cracks, showing a little distortion in front of the steering wheel. The plastics show signs of age but appear to be free of cracks.

The chrome controls, switchgear, binnacle and rally pack dials also show their age but add to the authenticity of the cabin. The oil pressure gauge is reported not to function, so an aftermarket item has been fitted. All of the other dials are said to work as they should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel chrome has age-related chrome imperfections yet still manages to look great. The rim, while well-used, is free of significant damage in the matching blue vinyl wrap. The metal gear lever for the automatic gearbox is presentable too.

Mechanics

The Mustangs effortless power is only bettered by the glorious V8 soundtrack.

Engine and Gearbox

The car has been fitted with a new battery and fired up straight away with no hesitation, with the expected condensation smoke upon start up but no splutters or blue smoke. The engine was left running for a period of time and the car idled smoothly with no engine undulations. We didn’t observe any fluid seepage on the day.

The engine presentation is reflective of the car's recent lack of use, with some metal components showing their age, but the ancillaries and hoses look good. Fitted with an automatic gearbox, it selects gears directly and with a slick action, there were no unwanted noises or slippage noted.

Suspension and Brakes

The car is fitted with drum brakes, so requires a reasonable amount of pressure to slow the car down at speed, but they do not bind and are free of squeal and stop the car with no unwanted vibrations or judders noticed.

The suspension was free of any outstanding faults, dealing with the uneven road without drama. The suspension components are particularly clean.

The Drive

The glorious roar of the V8 engine is part of the appeal of the Mustang, tough, reliable and easy to get hold of parts at a modest cost, the well-proven 289 cu in unit performs impeccably during our ~20-minute drive along the Buckinghamshire roads. We were treated to nice straights and a gentle hill incline, where the car pulled smoothly with no unwanted noises. It sounds superb on tick-over, its steady deep growl resonates through the exhaust.

The Mustang's driving dynamics are a step above the usual American classic car characteristics that one might expect, true, the suspension is sprung for comfort rather than handling balance, but the car corners perfectly well at cruising speeds. Charlie, who drove the car on behalf of Teresa is confident with the steering and told us it tracks well with no play.

Electrics and Other

Teresa told us all electrical components are working as expected, to her knowledge, with a replacement oil pressure gauge as mentioned. A Kenwood MP3 player and speakers have been fitted, they power up but we didn't test them. A few spares come with the car.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~2 year ownership, purchased from an enthusiast friend who did much of the work to the car themselves, a considerable amount has been spent on the engine and maintenance, with around ~£5,000s worth of invoices to back this up.

The Mustang has import documentation papers suggesting it was sold via a specialist classic car dealer from Texas and privately imported into the UK in 2009. All cleared and legal for road use, the car was sold to a Mustang collector who kept the car for ~11 years and only covered ~500 miles in it. During this period, around £5,000 was spent on the engine, running gear, heating, welding and sundry items.

The current owner bought the car in 2022 and it has been mainly kept in dry storage and lightly used over this period. It is MOT and road tax exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

    What is your reserve policy?

    A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

    If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

    Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

    Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

    Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
