Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Make the most of what is quite possibly one of the best-looking hard-top MGs.

The MGA Coupe Mk2, introduced in 1961, was the final evolution of the MGA series. It featured minor styling updates, including a revised grille and repositioned tail lamps. Unlike the roadster, the fixed-roof coupe offered wind-up windows and a more refined interior for better comfort and weather protection. Powered by an upgraded 1622cc inline-four engine producing ~90BHP, the Mk2 had improved acceleration and a higher top speed. A revised gearbox with closer ratios enhanced drivability, while Girling disc brakes at the front provided better stopping power. The chassis remained largely unchanged, maintaining the MGA’s precise handling.

Coming from ~10 years ownership with our vendor, this 1961 MGA Coupe is quite a notable example. It’s not very often you come across what appears to be an unrestored, original-condition, low-mileage vehicle backed up with a substantial amount of paperwork dating to back when it was new.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Anthony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I really wanted to find an MGA that was in its original condition.

Having always loved the shape and lines of the MGA and, in particular, all the little details, such as the unique door handles and the curved rear window, Anthony’s checklist for a classic MGA was a tall order, considering they are getting on for ~65 years old.

Anthony wanted to find an original-condition car that had not been restored. To his amazement, he came across this lovely 1961 example. It was low mileage, original, and well maintained, with a stack of paperwork, including the original bill of sale. Anthony will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The new design for MG was smooth and sleek, marking a fresh direction as the brand moved away from the ageing MG TF style.

Wheels and Tyres

The chrome wire wheels are in good condition, with only a small amount of age-related tarnishing on the chrome finish. A matching set of Continental Contact tyres are fitted, with a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Looking around the MGA, the bonnet, boot, and doors align well with even panel gaps. Overall, the bodywork appears to be in good order. There are some minor dings in a few places, notably on the offside front and rear wings. A little corrosion is showing through on the offside front wheel arch. The front edge of the drive's door is slightly rough too.

We've provided high-resolution images and videos detailing our observations, so please take the time to review all media files for a comprehensive view of the car’s condition.

Paint

The MGA's black paintwork is said to be mainly original, with some areas having been repainted or blended in, and minor scuffs notably on the nearside front wing and nearside rear wing, which add to the charming patina of this 1960s classic. With the originality of course, comes other signs of ageing like swirl marks in the paint, that were particularly visible in the low winter sun.

Images are taken from various angles to present the car as you would see it in person. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion on the paint’s condition.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition, with only the usual minor age-related marks expected on a car from the 1960s. The chrome window frames have a light amount of tarnishing, in keeping with the rest of the MGA. The curved rear screen and rubber seal are also in good order.

Interior

The original red leather seats have stood the test of time and are arguably nicely broken in.

Seats and Carpets

The MGA’s seats are said to be original, finished in red leather. As expected, they show patina that comes with age, and there is a small hole in the driver’s bolster. Both door cards are finished to match the seats and remain in good order with no damage.

The grey carpets appear to be in good condition, with no excessive wear.
Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The red leather dashboard, an upgraded feature on the Mk2, matches the seats and is free from any major noticeable damage. The fascia has some small black marks, but nothing excessive.

All of the instruments appear to be in good order and are reported to work correctly. The odometer shows a reading of ~36,107 miles at the time of our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with four-spoke steering wheel, it remains in good order with just a light amount of patina and some age-related wear.

The gear knob and gear gaiter are also in good condition, again showing only light wear.

Mechanics

Fitted with the original B-Series, three-bearing engine, this unit was said to produce ~90BHP from factory.

Engine and Gearbox

Believed to be the original engine, it has recently had a full service, a new ignition coil, a condenser, various fuel pipes replaced, and the fuel system cleaned. The engine starts without hesitation and runs smoothly, with no reported issues.

Gear selection is precise, and there are no untoward noises coming from the transmission. Watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes were also overhauled during the recommissioning process. They now bring the car to a stop in a straight line and, for extra peace of mind, were checked during a recent MOT test.

On the road, the car feels tight, with no knocks or bangs from either corner of the suspension.

The Drive

Out on the road, the MGA is more than just a stunning classic, it’s an absolute joy to drive. With its sleek, curvaceous design, it effortlessly turns heads wherever it goes. The driving experience enhances the thrill, making every journey feel like a special occasion. Cruising along country lanes, the MGA delivers an engaging, nostalgic driving experience that perfectly captures the essence of classic British motoring.

Electrics and Other

All switchgear appears to be in good condition, with just a small amount of patina. Everything is reported to be working correctly.

History and Paperwork

With ~65 years of paperwork, including the original sales invoice, this MGA now comes to market from ~10 year ownership and was MOTd as recently as last year.

Coming from ~10 years ownership with Anthony, there is a substantial amount of paperwork with the MGA that dates back to when it was first purchased. There are also lots of handwritten logs that add to the originality of the MGA, showing when the car had work carried out.

One thing you will notice when looking through the paperwork is that despite its low mileage, the MGA has been taken for regular MOT tests and has very often passed with no advisories. The most recent test was carried out on 13.07.2024 at 36,104 miles.

This is a genuine survivor from 1961, left in its original condition but also used in small yet regular intervals. As you can see from the MOT history, it remains the ideal British classic for someone who wants to enjoy a usable classic car.

We’ve conducted our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and have also actioned a history check on the vehicle.
