Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Consigner and Editor

The agility and performance of a BTCC racer in a premium saloon.

The BMW 3 Series has consistently created a benchmark for family saloons, ever since the first generation hit the roads 50 years ago. The premium range of compact excessive cars has offered the perfect all-rounder for almost every type of driver, for those seeking quality, driver-focused ergonomics and driving enjoyment. These attributes forged a reputation in motorsports, thanks to the 3 Series' even weight distribution, stability and performance.

Based on the fifth generation E90 model, the 320 Si offered the public a genuine taste of that motorsports pedigree. Created as a homologation special, for entry in the WTCC, the British hand-built 2.0-litre 170 bhp N45B20S engine is unique to the 320 Si. Notable for its high revving capabilities, the engine is mounted low and further back to improve the handling. The 320 Si is fitted with larger disc brakes, light wheels, a larger radiator and an upgraded diff and gearbox. It's also kitted in the desirable M sport package, with a leather 3-prong sports steering wheel and sports front seats.

Limited to just 2600 units worldwide, this is one of just 500 RHD cars produced for the UK market. This 2006 320 Si has the benefit of maintenance and servicing by experts who specialise in taking care of the N45B20S engine. Finished in a luscious Le Man blue, this smartly presented example retains its original specification and has just 54,224 miles on the clock. It has cared for by 3 previous owners, has 11 service stamps, two keys and a MOT to November 2005.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Mike the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Opening the bonnet and seeing the carbon fibre rocker cover still brings a smile to my face!

Mike was actually looking at E90 Alpina D3s and was looking at one when he came across this car at a specialist high performance dealership in Nottingham. Having done some research into the history of the car, he soon uncovered the racing pedigree and rarity of the Si.

It's one of those cars that, unless you are a true petrol head, you may not know about it, but those that know, know!

Due to a growing family and increasing lack of use, he has now decided to sell the car. Mike will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Well looked after by successive owners, the visual presentation is positive.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17” BMW Motorsport BBS RE1000 wheels are in good shape and present well. There are the occasional signs of lacquer damage and minor scuff in places - ideal candidates for straightforward refurb to make perfect.

The car is fitted with a full set of Pirelli P Zero tyres, all are under 10 years old and legal, although the rear pair are flagged up with low thread.

Bodywork

While the underside of the car appears solid, there is a sheen of surface corrosion noted on some of the suspension components and rear subframe - these are flagged up as advisories. The wheel wells, boot floor and engine bay are decent.

The exterior is presented smartly, with no significant panel damage or discernible corrosion spotted. The panels display a flush fit and even shut lines. All doors open and close with ease, the passenger door handle is a little sticky.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the striking Le Mans blue colourway, the coverage is consistent and has a decent lustre. There are a few cosmetic surface scuffs on the body and stone chips on the bonnet, but the overall opinion is well above the expectations of a car of this age.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are in good shape, with no significant issues noted on the lights or lenses.

The trim is in good shape and well mounted, with just the offside door frame trim showing any signs of age. The bumpers are flush to the body with stone chip wear on the nose but otherwise free of scuffs. The rear defuser shows mild signs of age.

Interior

Near perfect inside, the combination of quality BMW material and low miles betrays the age of the car.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are smartly presented, with nothing more than minor bolster creasing on the driver's side.

The carpets and mats are in good shape and all damp-free. There are signs of discolouration noted on the boot carpet but otherwise, it appears to have seen gentle use.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent condition, with very little wear. The facia, binnicle, dials and centre console display well, with no significant wear or marks noted. All control functions are said to operate, Mike did point out a few dead pixels on the music system readout. The door cards, headlining and rear trim look smart.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel displays well, with minor wear noted on the gear knob.

Mechanics

A diligent service schedule and careful driving have kept the car running smoothly and reliably.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up readily, with no unwanted rattles and the dashboard warning lights went stay off. Other than the expected cold engine condensation, there were no suggestions of exhaust smoke during our visit and the car remained free of fluid leaks.

The unique hand-built engine presents well, some of the body mounting bolts/screws and minor metal components show signs of age - but appear to be cosmetic. Visual observation of the engine suggests positive maintenance with good ancillaries and hoses - the car retains its unique carbon fibre valve cover.

The gearbox operates smoothly, engaging gears with no negative feedback. Mike was satisfied with the clutch's biting point and feel.

Suspension and Brakes

The low-speed ride felt positive, free of any unwanted knocks or creaks.

The brakes function with a positive feel at urban speeds, effectively slowing the car with no signs of pulling, vibrations or noise. The hoses and shocks show signs of surface corrosion but are only flagged up as advisories.

The Drive

The subtlety of the 320 Si means that it carries on its business with no screaming reference to its BTCC pedigree, which is largely a credit to the previous owners who have kept the car completely stock. However its performance, once warmed up is notable for its significant focus on its higher revs performance.

Mike was sensible enough not to prove this point on the built-up roads around Lewisham, but the balance of the low weight over the front axle and BTCC-inspired agility make this example stand out amongst the E90 models.

It drives with the expected refinement of BMW, with impeccable driving manners and complete confidence, yet the engine burble on idle is a hint of the cars true character. The ride was typically firm but offered enough absorbency and feel without any unwanted thuds or wobbles from the wheels. The Si specific hydraulic steering tracks dead straight and operates without any reported problems.

A consistent routine for its maintenance has brought out the best in the engine, and it idles sweetly with no undulations. It pulls well and its grip was evident by the balance of the drive. Mike has not experienced any issues with the engine temperature or oil pressure, the car was left running for 15+ minutes and all the engine vitalistatics remained in check.

Electrics and Other

It retains all of its original fittings, including the glovebox torch and full tool kit.

The car is kept in a secure storage facility with an indoor cover. It also comes with a spare set of centre caps.

History and Paperwork

Mike has been preventative rather than reactive in terms of maintenance.

First registered at BMW Mill Sunderland in June 2006, the car stayed in the North East until 2015 until it was sold to a specialist and then taken on by its current owner. Serviced on a regular basis almost exclusively by BMW main dealers and BM Sport, the car has not needed any major engine work over its charmed life, which has been largely due to careful driving, quality fuels and correct maintenance. This is also confirmed by the car's 11 service stamps, averaging a service every 5,000 miles. It was last serviced in November 2024, and has covered very few miles since then.

It comes with a folder of service invoices since 2015 and several past MOT certificates. It retains its owner manual and wallet. It has an MOT to November 2025 and comes with two keys and an emergency key.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
