Introduction

Tom Brett
Content Editor

In the family since 1986, this British classic is waiting for a new owner to get it back on the road.

The Triumph Herald was introduced in 1959 and ceased production in 1971, making this '13/60' example one of the later models. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, the car came in many body styles like the convertible you see here.

This car has stood the test of time, even though it hasn't been use for some 16 years, it's been garaged for most of its time off the road. We were very surprised to see the good condition of the interior and hood, for a car that's spent the last 5 years outdoors under a cover. This is a car for someone with the knowhow to snap up and rejuvenate.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Catherine, the owner, having photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I was given this car as a wedding present back in 1996, using it when I could until family life meant it wasn't practical.

Catherine and her husband used to use the car on a semi regular basis up until 2004. Once they had children, they just found they didn't have time or occasion to use it like they used to. Being SORN from around 2004 onwards, most of this time it spent in their garage, up until 2015 when it took its place on the drive under a cover.

They would love to see the car up and running again, hoping a new passionate mechanic can do just that! Catherine states that the car was running perfectly around 16 years ago and believes it won't take much to get her back on the road again, she cannot wait to see this happen.

Exterior

An Italian-styled charmer, those distinctive front and rear wings and convertible too.

Wheels and Tyres

13" pressed steel disc wheels are generally in a fair but tired condition with what appears to be some minor surface corrosion taking place on one of the surfaces (nearside front wheel).

As can be seen in the photos, the tyres are old and deflated, they'd need to be replaced.

Bodywork

The steel body panels had significant work done to them before given as a present to Catherine in 1996. With the car having been kept garaged for most of its life with the family, it seems to have stopped rust forming.

The shut lines on the doors look like they could be adjusted for a more even fit. The convertible roof still functions as you can see from the images of it both up and down. It looks to have developed some discolouration on the inside as you'll see pictured in the interior review.

Paint

Catherine's husband had the car resprayed to red from the original mustard yellow some time ago.

The finish on the paint look to be even across the car due to being stored correctly for the most of its life. Take a look at the photos and video that Catherine has taken of the car for the detailed view.

Glass and Trim

The wing mirrors were replaced just before Catherine got behind the wheel, as well as boot and door rubber along with some refurbishment and replacement of some chrome work. Again, perhaps surprisingly the chrome on the car looks good given it has been under a cover for the past 5 years.

Interior

Having been covered and stored correctly, the interior has been kept dry and not deteriorated over time.

Seats and Carpets

With a little clean the black vinyl seats will be easily looking great again as they don't seem to have suffered any loss in condition.

The carpets look in similar condition too, still maintaining their colour and not showing signs of water damage etc.

Dashboard

With a slight patinated look, the dashboard holds up in good nick. The wrap on the top of the dash also looks good, not warped or cracking.

We are unsure about the functionality of the dials and gauges but they are still easily legible, please see the photos.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both look to be original and the condition in line with the age and mileage of the car.

A few marks on the steering wheel, and some discolouration on the centre Triumph badging.

Mechanics

Featuring a 1.3L 4 cylinder engine, back when the car left the factory it would have been pushing out 61 BHP.

Engine and Gearbox

Few cars of this era have the accessibility to the engine bay that the Herald possesses. With a spring-loaded front bonnet, it's incredibly easy to open, and even easier to see what may need to be fixed. The engine is a 1.3L 4-cylinder water-cooled engine that was capable of 85mph - relatively advanced for a car of the time and value.

The 4-speed manual gearbox has synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear.

Suspension and Brakes

The underside of the car has maintained a lot of integrity, some surface rust across the car as you'd expect.

With the car having been stored and not used for some time, we can only assume that the brake system would need a thorough going through.

The Drive

During a time where British convertibles were coming rarer, the soft top Herald made a commendable effort.

When this car is back on the road, we're sure the new owners will enjoy feeling the wind in their hair with the roof down.

Electrics and Other

As Catherine has not used the car in the last 16 years, we are unsure about what needs to be done now, she mentions that everything was running fine when they first parked the car up for storage.

History and Paperwork

In the family since 1986, passed from mother to son, and then to sister.

As mentioned, the car was given to Catherine as a wedding present in 1996. The original owner had the Herald handed to them as a birthday present (a small birthday note can be seen on the original service handbook of the car). The last MOT came in 2003 with the mileage not changing much since then.

Coming out of a 34 year-long family ownership, Catherine will be sad to see the car go, but would love to see it on the road again.
