Introduction

A classic Alfa, fun and economical.

I have owned "Celeste" since October 2008, she was originally purchased by a British ex- pat working in Italy and lived there for about 10 years. She was imported to the UK November 2000 and passed to the original owners brother in Shipley. He confessed to rather neglecting her and I set about slowly renovating her.

Having completed a system by system overhaul, time restrictions and a potential future house move, mean I no longer have time or space to give her the attention I would like - time to move on.

Market Auction

David, the seller, has created this listing themselves using our free Market Auction tool. Unlike our Curated Auctions, we haven’t photographed the car or written the listing, however we have completed 3 important security checks for your peace of mind.

V5C Checked

David provided a copy of the V5C logbook, which we verified against his photo ID for name and address confirmation.

ID Checked

David provided his photo ID, which we verified against the name and address on the V5C logbook.

History Checked

History check actioned using HPi, the industry’s top verification service, for finance, write-offs, and stolen records.

Exterior

Celeste Blue was the colour Alfa chose to their marketing material.

Wheels and Tyres

The steel wheels have been stripped and powder coated. Fitted with Avon 185/70 14H tyres - plenty of tread left.

Stored in dry and dark conditions with no sign of cracking or deterioration of the rubber.

Bodywork

The outer sills had some corrosion and new section were fabricated and welded (2010). The suspension mount points and jack points are all sound. Any loose underseal has been removed, any rust treated, and fresh protection applied.

There are some small areas of corrosion visible but I am not aware of any structural corrosion. The worst area is the spare wheel well which had some pinhole perforations. These were treated and have not progressed in 17 years. There are a couple of areas adjacent to the well which I would draw attention to, but again have not progressed in my ownership.

The drivers door has been dented at some stage - close attention to the fold line shows that the exact contour has not quite been restored.

Paint

Probably her weakest area. Quite acceptable from 6 feet but closer inspection shows plenty of small defects/ dings/ chips/ scuffs. There has been a respray at some point in the past. Several chips to door edges which I have documented in the images.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen appears to be original and shows some pitting but has never been a concern for MOT inspectors.

I believe the hood was replaced prior to my ownership and is in good condition, no cracking of the rear window and fits well to the side windows The left rear bumper has been distorted slightly.

An electric motor has been fitted to the right side door window, the driver side retains a mechanical crank.

Interior

The rare dark blue complements the light blue bodywork.

Seats and Carpets

The seats have been recovered in vinylcloth from Alfaholics, who went to some effort to source the original material.

Carpets are original and fair for the age.

Custom carpet mats are included.

Door cards were severely water damaged and have been remade.

Dashboard

There is a small split in the top of the dash which has not progressed in my ownership.

All instruments work.

A black centre console from an S4 is currently fitted but the original blue console and side panels are included in the sale.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wood rim wheel has some wear to the paint and varnish.

Wooden gear knob is in good condition.

Mechanics

Full mechanical overhaul has taken place.

Engine and Gearbox

The original engine and gearbox have been rebuilt. The gearbox was done by Alfaholics. The engine was cleaned and checked by a local engineering firm. Journals and cylinder bores were within tolerances.

New valve guides fitted and bottom end balanced including clutch.

New piston rings and shell bearings.

Suspension and Brakes

All suspension components have been dismantled, powder coated where appropriate and reassembled with new bushes.

New front discs and overhaul of callipers.

The Drive

The engine starts well but is happiest with regular use. No major squeaks or rattles, idles comfortably at 750 rpm and accelerates smoothly. Gear change is smooth but 3rd occasionally needs a firmer push to engage.

A wind deflector keeps the worst draughts off the back of the neck, easily removed if needed.

Electrics and Other

Alfas does not have the best reputation of electrics but has generally stood up well in this example. Modifications include electronic ignition, electric fuel pump and radiator fan. Relays to headlight and starter solenoid circuits to lighten load on column switches (expensive to replace- if available).

The wipers work fine in the rain but struggle on a dry screen. Reversing light not working (switch in gearbox has failed).

Battery cutout fitted for security and maintenance.

History and Paperwork

Extensive documentation.

MOT's available for most of the time I have owned the car . Repairs have been documented including materials used. Last oil change was about 18 months ago and was generally done on an annual basis.

A large file of receipts are available - the major ones are included in the images.

Where original parts have been removed / substituted, these will be included in the sale to preserve originality. This includes centre console, mechanical fuel pump and filter ( plus a box of miscellaneous bits and pieces). Soft dust cover ( not waterproof).

From Trade Classics:

This is a Market Auction listing, meaning we have not visited and photographed the car - instead the seller has supplied the images and written the description. However we’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID that matches the V5, and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPi that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

Viewings are welcomed, so please get in touch with us via the 'contact us' page - we just need to speak to you first on the phone, have you register on the site, and also send in valid photo ID before confirming a suitable time to visit.

Like all our auctions, if there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - the Buyer's Premium is not refundable in any instance, just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
