Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

The beautifully sleek shape of the Alfa Romeo Spider was a product of legendary coach-builder Pininfarina.

The Alfa Romeo Spider has been around since 1966, it was thrust into the limelight in the 1967 film The Graduate, where it was driven by Dustin Hoffman.

This 1986 model is a series 3 fitted with a 2.0L inline 4, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. It produces ~126hp and ~131lb-ft of torque. Like a lot of cars at the time, the series 3 introduced the rubber bumpers to comply US regulations. The interior was also given a make-over from the earlier models, with an updated gauge cluster and centre console.

This car is finished in a lovely shade of blue and comes to the market after the previous owner had only covered ~4,000 miles in ~16 years.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Dugi the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having always wanted an Alfa Spider, Dugi made an offer on this one when he found this example for sale.

Dugi only bought the Alfa earlier this year - "I have always thought this a beautifully designed car and this one has been looked after and has low mileage".

With the recent heatwave Dugi has been getting out and about in the car and enjoying some top down motoring. Dugi was planning on keeping it for the long-term but with a house move on the horizon there won't be enough garage space for the lovely Alfa. "I could put it into storage but it's better that the car is enjoyed and used" Dugi says.

Dugi says "The Alfa does what it is designed to do - it is stable at speed ,cruises easily at legal limits with power in hand to overtake when needs be easily. Its lines are without doubt classy and make it a very distinct looking car and one that brings much attention".

Exterior

An elegant design by Pininfarina, the Spider has charm and beauty.

Wheels and Tyres

The standard 5-spoke alloy wheels look to be in good condition with only the rears showing very slight damage, a small mark on one of the spokes on the rear driver-side and a small kerning mark on the rim of the rear passenger-side.

The car is running two matching sets of tyres; Avons on the front and Goodyear on the rear. The Goodyear set on the rear appeared to be in good condition with a decent amount of tread on them, however the Avons on the front showed quite a bit of cracking on the sidewall. We would definitely recommend changing the front tyres.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to make a judgement on the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork looked to be in good condition, we didn't notice any dings or scrapes throughout the car.

Also, we didn't notice any visible signs of corrosion on the bodywork, however there was some signs of corrosion forming on the underside of the car, as you'll see in the images and video.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint on the Spider looks to be in generally good condition too.

In the sun we could just see some swirls, they didn't seem too deep though, so should be easy to correct with a good mop and polish.

We couldn't see any visible signs of corrosion coming through the paint.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass seemed to be in good condition too and we didn't notice any chips or cracks in any of the glass.

The bumpers looked to be a little bit faded but we believe they should be easily buffed up with some bumper care product. Chrome around the headlights and windscreen looks good.

The roof looks okay but does have some marks on it and had a couple of worn areas.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

An unusual, almost horizontal gearstick and 14mph on the speedometer greet you as you enter the cabin, even at a stand-still.

Seats and Carpets

The lovely tan leather of the seats have a nice contrast to the blue of the exterior, the leather looked in decent condition - we didn't notice any rips or tears. There were some signs of age on both seats with creases in the leather, but overall the seats looked in good condition and in accordance with the age and mileage shown on the dash.

The carpets looked to be in good condition too, with only a couple of slight marks noticed.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to make your own mind up.

Dashboard

The Spider features quite a simple dash with some vents, radio, gearstick - all driver focused.

The dials rest at ~15mph and ~500 rpm even when the car isn't running, a very Italian thing to do.

Everything on the dash looked to be in good, working condition.

Take a look at the photos and video below to make your own mind up.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A three pronged steering wheel is fitted to the Spider and looked in great condition with only very light wear noticed on the rim of the wheel - looking in line with the age and mileage of the car.

The gearstick with its unusual position also looked to be in good condition with very light signs of wear over the years too.

Please view the photos and video below to make your on decision.

Mechanics

A perky 2.0L with plenty of torque lives under the bonnet.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting first time the engine sounded good, we didn't notice any untoward noises from the engine, either at start up or whilst on the road. Dugi told us it is a very torquey unit, you could pull away easily in 2nd gear but would be advisable to preserve the clutch.

We noticed smooth shifts in the 5-speed box, with a long throw.

Please take a look at the On The Road video to see and hear the Spider in motion.

Suspension and Brakes

Suspension felt supple whilst on the road, even over some rough surfaces on the back roads. We didn't notice any unexpected noises coming from the suspension either.

Brakes felt sharp and we didn't notice any vibrations under braking.

Please take a look at the On The Road video to check the suspension and brakes for yourself.

The Drive

As mentioned above the Spider drove well, the engine performed and sounded good, the gearbox was smooth with no crunches.

The suspension felt good with no unwanted noises and the brakes worked well as expected.

Dugi says he really enjoys the driving ease and comfort on B class country roads - it cruises effortlessly with plenty power in reserve.

Please take a look at the On The Road video to see our drive in the car.

Electrics and Other

All electrics seemed to be in good working order, with window, light and dials all working as expected.

We didn't try the radio but Dugi told us it was working.

History and Paperwork

This Spider comes with a great amount of history with lots of receipts.

This seems to be a very well looked after car, it started its life abroad and has a copy of the first V5 from when it was imported to Great Britain.

Dugi will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Good afternoon, on the description I read that the car was abroad and imported to the UK. Was the car originally RHD or was it previously LHD and converted to RHD? Thank you.
