Introduction

Glyn Parry

A lot of good things have come out of Italy; fashion, architecture, design, and obviously the Alfa Romeo Spider.

The original Alfa Romeo Spider was launched in 1966 as a two-seater, front engine, rear-wheel drive roadster, designed by the famous Pininfarina. It was a follow on from its predecessor, the Giulietta Spider. The car made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The new Spider had a price tag similar to that of the E-type jaguar in the UK. The new Alfa was fitted with the revvy 1,570cc twin cam engine, which had twin Weber carburettors, helping the Spider produce an acceptable 108BHP. It was soon to be upgraded in 1968 with the more powerful 1750 Spider Veloce, which had a 1,779 cc engine producing 116BHP.

Things changed in 1970 when the second generation Spider was introduced. The first thing you would notice was the exterior styling. Gone was the curvaceous tail in favour of a more squared off version which helped improve the luggage capacity. A year later saw another engine increase to 1,962 cc and 132BHP, and the name was changed to the 2000 Spider Veloce. A few more changes over the coming years kept the Alfa up to date with the contemporary car trends until 1982, when another redesign of the Spider was introduced, Series 3 (S3) as it's known. The car had some cosmetic upgrades to the bumpers and addition of a boot spoiler. In 1986 the Quadrifoglio Verde (green four leaf clover) was launched, and this featured side skirts, new mirrors, a different trim and was only available in Red, Black or Silver.

The model we have here today is a 1989 Spider Quadrifoglio Verde in Silver, and it’s a left hand drive model that the owner Piers sourced in Holland from a company that specialises in Italian classics, making him the first UK keeper. It's a cracking example with all the right bits on it, the QV really does have that stand out appeal compared to the standard S3s. With ~£9,000 spent on this car over the past 6 years, this car could be a smart buy for the new owner.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Piers the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I wanted to ensure I got the best I could get, and so nowhere was too far to travel!

Piers has owned the Spider for six years. Purchasing the car from a classic dealer in Holland ensured he was able to get the Italian classic he wanted. You can tell he's an enthusiast when it comes to these cars, over his ownership he's committed to some serious expenditure to maintain and further improve the car, most notably a major engine rebuild in 2019.

With other commitments and a busy schedule, this has meant the Alfa has taken a back seat and is not really being used as much as Piers would like. This has brought the decision to part with his Italian classic forward. Please feel free to leave any questions in the comments below and Piers will be happy to get back to you.

Exterior

The Series 3 Spider Quadrifoglio Verde with the additional side skirts and spoiler is perfect for a modern-day classic.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the model specific 15” pepper pot style alloy wheels, there present in good condition to all four corners, with just some age related marks in keeping with the mileage.

The tyres are all matching Michelin Energy and have a good amount of tread remaining. Please see the images for more detailed photographs.

Bodywork

The bodywork presents in good condition with no dinks or car park injuries to the sides. The panel gaps look to be equal to the doors, bonnet and boot. We did notice that the lower section of the driver’s door sticks out a little towards the back edge of the door.

The convertible roof presents in excellent condition and closes nice and tight. The rear window is nice and clear with no obvious scratches. The underside has been treated on 26th February 2021, with Before 'n' After rustproofing which is guaranteed for 5 years.

Paint

Finished in Silver, one of three colours available for this model, the Spider looks great. There are some stone chips here and there in line with age and mileage of the car. Some of the marks would more than likely come out with a machine polish.

On both doors it looks like the car has had bigger mirrors fitted at one point which have then been replaced with the ones it’s wearing now. There is one area on the front scuttle panel that has a few small blisters showing. Please review the image and video gallery for a detailed view of all external areas.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and side windows are in good condition in line with their age and don’t look to have any major scratches. The windscreen seal is in good condition.

The door mirrors and door handles do have some slight pitting to the chrome finish. The rubber spoiler does have a one inch split on the left hand corner piece.

Interior

Grey leather and red carpets were the order of the day for the Quadrifoglio Verde model, definitely an 80's vibe.

Seats and Carpets

The grey leather seats were the standard trim option for the Spider Quadrifoglio Verde - they are nicely worn in. There is a small split in the rear of the passenger seat which looks to have caught on the roof mechanism at some point. With some of the cracks it is quite an easy job to recolour for the DIY enthusiast at home.

The door cards have been replaced by Piers to some black items after the originals were looking a little tired at the bottom. The originals are included with the car for anyone wishing to refit these.

Another standard trim item for this model was the red carpets. These are in quite good condition. There is a small hole in the driver’s side from where your heel would sit and two smaller holes further back which could be where some mats have been fastened. There are some Alfa Romeo embroidered mats included which do cover these small holes and obviously help protect the carpet.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition with no obvious cracks across the top, often found with older cars. The glove box opens and closes as it should.

The instrument cluster looks to be all scratch free and in good condition with the odometer showing ~112,799 kilometres (70,090 miles) at the time of our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has been replaced with a wood rim wheel, and this is in excellent condition on the wood, with just a small amount of corrosion to the horn buttons.

The gear knob matches the steering wheel and is in excellent condition.

Mechanics

The revvy 2.0 litre twin cam sounds fantastic with the twin Webers and the Alfaholics induction kit.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with a 2.0 twin cam, the Alfa had an engine rebuild in July 2019, and since then the car has covered just over 1,000 kilometers. This should give the new owner peace of mind for the future life of the engine. The engine is fitted with an Alfaholics open air filter kit. However, the car comes with the original airbox & fittings, which can easily be reinstated if desired.

The car fires up with ease and just takes a second to clear its throat as the twin carbs settle. The gearbox was also rebuilt at the same time as the engine and so, as you would expect, the change is reported by Piers to be precise and smooth.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension looks to be the original set-up which is keeping the Spider sitting nice and level. There are no obvious noises reported to be coming from the car while driving.

New front calipers and pads were fitted to the car in June 2020, ensuring the car comes to a halt just as it should.

The Drive

Piers has enjoyed driving the car over the past 6 years and has ensured it has been kept mechanically sound. Following the engine and gearbox rebuild, the car is running lovely and sounds excellent.

Electrics and Other

Everything electrical looks to be working as it should, the windows go up and down quickly.
There is an Alpine radio cassette fitted, although we didn't have a tape to test the player. Immobiliser is located on the centre console.

In the engine bay, the cooling system has been upgraded with a thermostatically controlled electric cooling fan.

History and Paperwork

The QV version of the S3, this Spider has had ~£9,000 been spent over the last 6 years including an engine and gearbox overhaul, making it a great value proposition.

Imported in to the UK by Peirs in 2015 with just 2 former Dutch keepers, this 1989 Alfa Romeo Spider Quadrifoglio Verde comes with plenty of receipts and invoices for everything he's purchased and had done to the car over the past 6 years.

Please see the paperwork gallery for a more detailed look at the paperwork.
