Introduction

A lot of good things have come out of Italy; fashion, architecture, design, and obviously the Alfa Romeo Spider.
The original Alfa Romeo Spider was launched in 1966 as a two-seater, front engine, rear-wheel drive roadster, designed by the famous Pininfarina. It was a follow on from its predecessor, the Giulietta Spider. The car made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The new Spider had a price tag similar to that of the E-type jaguar in the UK. The new Alfa was fitted with the revvy 1,570cc twin cam engine, which had twin Weber carburettors, helping the Spider produce an acceptable 108BHP. It was soon to be upgraded in 1968 with the more powerful 1750 Spider Veloce, which had a 1,779 cc engine producing 116BHP.
Things changed in 1970 when the second generation Spider was introduced. The first thing you would notice was the exterior styling. Gone was the curvaceous tail in favour of a more squared off version which helped improve the luggage capacity. A year later saw another engine increase to 1,962 cc and 132BHP, and the name was changed to the 2000 Spider Veloce. A few more changes over the coming years kept the Alfa up to date with the contemporary car trends until 1982, when another redesign of the Spider was introduced, Series 3 (S3) as it's known. The car had some cosmetic upgrades to the bumpers and addition of a boot spoiler. In 1986 the Quadrifoglio Verde (green four leaf clover) was launched, and this featured side skirts, new mirrors, a different trim and was only available in Red, Black or Silver.
The model we have here today is a 1989 Spider Quadrifoglio Verde in Silver, and it’s a left hand drive model that the owner Piers sourced in Holland from a company that specialises in Italian classics, making him the first UK keeper. It's a cracking example with all the right bits on it, the QV really does have that stand out appeal compared to the standard S3s. With ~£9,000 spent on this car over the past 6 years, this car could be a smart buy for the new owner.
