Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

Arguably the most beautiful iteration of Pininfarina's design - a true classic, the Alfa Romeo Spider.

The original Alfa Romeo Spider was launched in 1966 as a two-seater, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster, designed by the famous Pininfarina. It was a follow-on from its predecessor, the Giulietta Spider. The car made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The new Spider had a price tag similar to that of the E-type Jaguar in the UK. The new Alfa was fitted with the revvy 1,570cc twin-cam engine, which had twin Weber carburetors, helping the Spider produce an acceptable 108BHP. It was soon to be upgraded in 1968 with the more powerful 1750 Spider Veloce, which had a 1,779 cc engine producing 116BHP.

This is a third-generation Spider, which debuted in North America for the '82 model year with the introduction of the 2.0L Bosch electronic fuel injection system. In '83 the Spider saw further styling revisions with the introduction of black rubber front and rear bumpers, with incorporating front grille, small soft rubber spoiler added to the rear kammback and various minor mechanical modifications.

For the North American market, a model marketed as the Graduate acknowledged the model's appearance in the '67 film, The Graduate, starring Dustin Hoffman. This Graduate was imported to the UK in 1990 and converted to RHD. It's had 8 previous owners since then, and has been in the careful hands of June and Andrew for the previous 9 years. More recently in October, there has been ~£3,000 expenditure on some exterior renovation to ensure this Spiders journey continues.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Andrew and June the owners, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This car drips charisma from every pore, we'll both certainly miss this Spider Graduate.

This Spider was built in Italy for the US market, it was imported to the UK in 1990, then it's believed to have been professionally converted to RHD by Bell and Colleville for around £8,000. Photos of the complete respray and further restoration work can be seen in the history media pack below.

Both June and Andrew have enjoyed many great journeys in the Graduate, having owned the car since 2012 they've covered ~15,000 miles across Scotland and the UK in it. Andrew said, "I was originally looking for an older sports car, but when I saw this I was sold, I liked the fact that it was younger but looked traditional. I have always loved the Series 3 Spider which benefits from a fuel-injected engine and the Graduate model is that little bit special".

The car is part of the furniture for both June and Andrew, however, due to other plans and having their fun in the Spider they have reluctantly decided to pass the joy of owning a Spider onto a like-minded enthusiast. Andrew and June will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

A genuine classic roadster experience awaits with classy and elegant Italian styling.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with lovely 14" Alfa silver alloys that all appear in good condition with little signs of age. We love how they give the Spider a sporty character.

The wheels are wrapped in Michelin Energy Saver tyres, dated 2013/14. All the tyres appear to have a good amount of tread left on them.

Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at each wheel.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this Graduate looks to be in great condition across every panel. The panel fit of the doors and body appears flush and true across the car, and up to the standard of Alfas from this era.

Andrew has had restoration work carried out in October, which included repairs and new offside/nearside front wings, as well as new inner panels.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a traditional and Iconic Alfa Romeo Red, the paintwork on this car looks to be finished to a high standard. Even in colour and coverage across each panel.

In October this car had restoration work and fresh paint on both front wings, coming to a total of ~£3,000. Take a look at the paperwork and history media pack for more information.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

All appear in great condition across the car.

The trim and glass look the part with no major signs of damage, cracks, or chips noticed on the visit.

The car had a new Mohair hood fitted in 2013, which still looks in great condition today.

Also Andrew comments, "when the car was changed to right-hand drive in 1990, the black plastic wing mirrors were changed to the lovely round chrome ones now on the car".

Please watch the video to see the whole exterior in great detail.

Interior

A very comfortable and usable cabin, well equipped for road trips around the continent today.

Seats and Carpets

These black vinyl seats are presented in excellent condition, with very little signs of use.

The carpets and door cards along with the inside of the mohair convertible roof look in very good condition.

Please watch the video review to see the inside in detail.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the interior of this car, the dashboard and the instrument cluster are clean and smart.

The odometer was showing ~85,000 on our visit.

Please view the images and interior video to see the dash in more detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classy and original wood-rimmed Alfa Romeo Spider steering wheel and 5-speed manual gearstick appear in great condition.

Please take a look at the photos for a closer look.

Mechanics

The vocal 2.0-litre engine, direct gearshift, and vivid steering provide a driving experience unlike any other.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with a 2.0L (1962cc) DOHC four-cylinder engine fuel fed by Bosch L-Jetronic coupled to a five-speed transmission, the Spider produces ~126BHP.

The car started first-time in the cold start video we conducted, Andrew comments, "the engine has needed no major work and purrs perfectly". Please review the photos and the mechanical review video showing the engine bay and underside.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension looks to be the original set-up which is keeping the Spider sitting nice and level. There are no obvious noises reported to be coming from the car while driving and can be seen in the on-the-road clips we captured in the mechanical video.

Andrew reports to us a very smooth ride with prompt stopping power from the front disc brakes and rear drums.

The Drive

The Spider is a great drivers' car, a cult classic, and style icon. It has great handling, sharp steering, and excellent all-around braking. Everything you'd want and more in a roadster.

Andrew and June have had a lot of enjoyable trips around Scotland and they'll be sad to see it go, but will be happy it's being enjoyed once again by a like-minded enthusiast.

Electrics and Other

Andrew reports that all the electrics within the car are fully working to his knowledge.

The rear number plate light appears to be dislodged and will require some more screws.

History and Paperwork

An Alfa Spider represents an accessible way into classic roadster ownership - with recent bodywork, paint, and mechanical work carried out, this Spider is ready to cruise around the continent in style.

In October Andrew and June have had the following work carried out: bodywork repaired, cleaned all brake pipes, handbrake linkages, fit new brake pipes where required, bleed all brakes, stripped front brake calipers, cleaned up discs and carriers, all pads cleaned, rear brake drums cleaned and lubed, full service with new fluids, filters, and plugs, under-seal applied.

The car comes with a good amount of provenance, with regular MOTs and any required work previously carried out making it a very attractive package.

Please review all the paperwork to see other services / work carried out on the car.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Andrew could you tell me the following please.
The repair is down as the wings. Have they been replaced or was it the sills on both sides renewed as well as the lower section of the wings.
Do you know when the respray was carried out.
Cheers
