Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

The Alfa Romeo Spider offers the style and performance you’d expect from an Italian car, especially in its Quadrifoglio guise.

First introduced at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo Spider was based on the underpinnings of the Giulia, initially featuring a 1.6-litre twin-cam engine producing approximately ~108BHP. Production of the Spider continued until 1993 across four generations. While mechanical upgrades were introduced with each iteration, the Pininfarina styling remained relatively consistent—its body lines were unmistakably those of an Alfa Spider.

This particular car is a Series 3 Alfa Romeo Spider Quadrifoglio, which received newly designed side skirts and front and rear spoilers, as well as updated interior trim, featuring grey leather seats and red carpets. Mechanically identical to the Spider Veloce, it features a 2.0-litre engine producing around ~126BHP, sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.

The Spider comes to market from just shy of ~4 year ownership, purchased as a car to work on and enjoy. In current ownership, the car has undergone a major overhaul of the suspension and brakes. This work, on top of various servicing and new clutch in the last 10 years, make it a lovely example to use and enjoy. It is supplied with a current MOT, valid until 10 March 2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Garry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm a retired motor mechanic, I've always enjoyed classics, working on and improving them - this Spider being the latest.

Garry has taken on a variety of vehicles over the years, from motorbikes to tractors. When he came across this low-mileage Spider around four years ago, he knew it would be his next candidate. He told us he’s put hundreds of hours into the Alfa, focusing on ensuring it’s mechanically sound. He completely stripped out the suspension and braking system, cleaning, overhauling, and renewing components on the underside of the car where necessary.

Some of the new parts Garry fitted include link arms, ball joints, discs, pads, calliper overhauls, handbrake shoes, handbrake cables, brake pipes, and axle straps. After completing the work, he also applied two coats of Lanoguard for added protection. Garry mentioned he wanted to keep the bodywork as original as possible, so while the car isn’t concours, owing to a few stone chips and other age-related marks, it is an example that should inspire confidence for a new owner. Since completing the work, Garry has enjoyed taking the car to local shows. With a new project on the horizon, Garry has decided to part with the Spider, and he's happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The Quadrifoglio features extended front and rear spoilers, distinctive side skirts, and classic Pepper Pot alloy wheels.

Wheels and Tyres

The original "Pepper Pot" alloy wheels are still fitted and present well, showing only light age-related wear and some minor currb marks.

A matching set of Pirelli tyres is fitted, all in good condition with plenty of tread remaining. Three are dated 2017, with the fourth from 2018.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Spider appears to be in good condition overall, with no major dents or damage noted. We did observe a couple of small dings, one on the front bumper and another on the bonnet. No obvious visible signs of corrosion were found anywhere on the car. Garry is particularly proud of the wheel arches, where he has done an excellent job restoring the underside and applying two coats of Lanoguard for protection. Panel gaps look visually consistent, and the doors, bonnet, and boot all open and close smoothly.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paintwork presents with an even hue and consistent coverage overall. There are a number of stone chips around the front, particularly on the bonnet and front wings. We also noted some touch-ups in various areas, including the scuttle panel, next to the rear badge, and on the passenger door near the handle. There is some lacquer peel visible on the scuttle panel as well. Additionally, there are a few small scratches and paint chips around the car, the most noticeable being on the rear wing where it meets the bumper on the driver's side.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the car appears to be in good condition, with no major cracks or damage to the windscreen—just a few minor stone chips, as expected for its age. The exterior trim also presents well, with all badges and stickers intact. The driver’s side wing mirror does show some damage, including a scuff on the mirror cap and a crack in the plastic where it attaches to the car. There are also a couple of scuffs visible on the bumpers.

The matching red convertible roof is in great condition as pictured. We didn't observe any major issues with it, the rear screen looks to be free from any fogging etc that can come with age.

Interior

The wooden-rimmed steering wheel, grey leather with red stitching, and red carpets all contribute to a stylish and comfortable interior - a lovely place to be with the wind in your hair!

Seats and Carpets

Being a Quadrifoglio, the car is fitted with grey leather seats. They present well with just age related creases. We did notice a very small hole in the base of the passenger seat, which is highlighted in the photos below.

The red carpets present well, with only some light stains visible. The over carpets are also in good condition, featuring a half-leather section at the bottom.

Dashboard

The binnacle in front of the driver is in good condition, displaying all the necessary gauges. We didn’t notice any cracks in the dashboard, and all buttons are in good shape as pictured.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden-rimmed, three-spoke steering wheel is in lovely condition. The gearstick shows some signs of use, though nothing excessive.

Mechanics

A lively 2.0-litre engine and suspension overhaul make this Spider highly practical and ready for the road.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started up from cold without any issues, idling smoothly, and all warning lights went off as expected. On the road with Garry, the engine ran well, with no unwanted noises noted.

The five-speed manual gearbox performed smoothly, engaging gears without any crunching or other unpleasant sounds. As mentioned, Garry overhauled the rear axle, replacing the front seal, steam cleaning and painting it, as part of the work he did, and the car received a new clutch and ancillaries in 2018.

Suspension and Brakes

Following an extensive overhaul by Garry, the suspension performed excellently on the road, with no bangs or knocks coming from beneath the car.

The brakes have also been overhauled, with Garry telling us he stripped them down and fitted new handbrake shoes too.

The Drive

On the road with Garry, the Spider felt great. The engine pulled smoothly through the gears, with no unwanted noises, and gears engaged as expected. The suspension handled the roads well, even the rutted back roads featured in the 'On The Road' video, thanks to Garry’s extensive work on the suspension and brakes over many hours and the agile nature of the 105 series.

It's the perfect car for a sunny summer cruise along your favourite back roads - stylish and enjoyable in equal measure.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics in the car, but Garry assures us that everything is in working order to the best of his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from near ~4 year ownership, this car has seen thorough renovation of the underside, as well as other good maintenance and servicing in the last 10 years.

The car comes with its original manuals and service book, and Garry has also provided us with photos of his work on the underside. It's a well-sorted car, with this extensive work completed. It's a car that should inspire confidence to be used and enjoyed. The car also comes with a current MOT, valid until 10 March 2026.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
