Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Professional Consigner

This is 1 of 40 146 ti Twin Sparks left on the road and could be considered one the best.

The Alfa Romeo 146, the lesser-known version of the 3-door 145 should be viewed as family orientated 5-door sports car - a perfect mix of thinking with your head and your heart. Introduced in 1995 to replace the 33, the ti used the same 16 valve twin spark engine and parts from the bigger 155.

The Twin Spark is the definitive version of the 146. It was released in early 1996 and could be distinguished from the lesser models by its rear spoiler, side skirts, uprated brakes and steering clad with twelve hole alloy wheels. Capable of topping 130mph, the energetic engine coupled up to a positive gearchange and stiffer suspension gave the car a typically spirited experience. T

This 146 is a smart entry into Alfa ownership with the potential of being a great longer term investment. It's already a maturing classic and rare in numbers, so what's not to love.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Anthony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've done my bit to maintain this great little Alfa but it is now time for it to find a new home before I put any more miles on it...

Anthony bought the car in February 2018 with 65,000 miles on the clock. The car had little use in the preceding few years due to ill health of the previous owner and not used at all in the last year of their ownership. The car had a full-service history and the interior still looked like new.

He has spent over £3,600 on the car over the last two years. This includes a replacement steering rack, due to a leak of hydraulic fluid. The cambelt was renewed along with the water pump, and as an extra precaution, the top end of the engine rebuilt with all new valves and a skimmed head. In addition to this, the car received new variable valve timing and new radiator for good measure. The bill for the initial work came to £2,000.

Anthony has recently addressed all of the rust issues he could find, which includes cutting out the corrosion on the florpan and renewing the metal, followed by waxoil and undersealing.

Exterior

This 146 ti was debadged from the factory and had been garaged all its life.

Wheels and Tyres

The unique alloys are good with minor evidence of age-related wear. It also benefited from two new tyres last year.

Bodywork

The sills and boot area are all in good condition, with recent work applied to replace all of the corrosion on the floorpan and treated to prevent more corrosion.

Paint

As you can see from the images, the paint is in good condition.

The nearside of the car has been repainted as there were some door dings and scratches from 23 years of use.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all original and in great condition with no chips or scratches.

Interior

The car is almost perfect inside - a reflection of the care it's received over its life with the low mileage to back it up.

Seats and Carpets

The interior has been very well looked after, retaining much of its originality.

The seats and carpets are in very good condition.

Dashboard

Anthony tells us the dashboard is fully functional, with all the switchgear working correctly.

The condition of the rather '90s looking dashboard is almost as new.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear stick are reflective of the low number of careful owners the car has had, with very minor signs of wear.

Mechanics

The glorious soundtrack from the engine is a given on any Alfa Romeo - the 146 ti Twin Spark is no exception.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.0-litre twin-cam engine loves to rev and is in top shape. The gearbox is slick and easy to use, feeling much younger than its years.

Suspension and Brakes

The rear springs were corroded and so they were also replaced with a set of Bilstons and the rear shocks replaced at the same time.

The rear brake pads have been changed this year.

The Drive

The engines were cleaner, smoother and more powerful than their predecessors, the sporting nature complementing the excellent handling and ride.

The seats are particularly well designed in the 146, offering both comfort and support.

Anthony informs us the car drives exactly how it should with no issues.

Electrics and Other

All the electrics work normally.

A noteworthy feature of this car is the factory aircon, and Anthony states is fully functional and effective. Along with this, it features the original Sony stereo system with 10 CD changer in the boot.

History and Paperwork

I had more work carried out this year, to get the car back into the condition it deserved to be in.

When buying an Alfa Romeo, it is always said that service history and careful knowledgeable ownership is a must. Anthony bought this car off its original owner and continued to maintain its full-service records, as well as several thousand pounds spent on the engine and bodywork.

To add credibility to its careful history, the car has always been garaged and still has the original Fish Bros sticker on the rear windscreen and original number plates.
