A charming Italian roadster quickly making a return as a modern classic - the Spider offers a raspy 2.0-litre engine and prompt steering, perfect for the road trips.

The Alfa Romeo Spider (Type 916) is a two-seat roadster version of the GTV - only ~39,000 were ever produced between 1995-2006. The GTV variant was described as "one of the best sports cars of its time" by Jeremy Clarkson in 1998 and listed at no.29 in top 100 cars from 2001.

Fitted with a 2.0-litre 16-valve Twin Spark (148 hp) engine block, the car flies in the straights and holds its own in the corners. Equipped with power steering, auto air con, ABS, electric heated door mirrors, electric frameless windows, adjustable headlamps, adjustable steering wheel, six speakers, central locking, this car isn't short on electrical conveniences either.

Exterior

Penned by Enrico Fumia at Pininfarina with the goal to re-establish the sporty tradition of Alfa Romeos for the '90s - a goal they certainly achieved in this characterful Spider.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with lovely Alfa silver alloys that all appear in great condition on this car and give it a sporty character.

The wheels are wrapped in premium Pirelli rubber, dated 2006. All the tyres appear to have a good amount of tread left on them.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks to be in very good overall condition.

The panel fit of the doors and panels looks good across the car and up to the standard of the Alfa Romeos of this era.

On closer inspection we noticed the slightest bubbling beginning to appear around the rear wheel arches some very minor surface corrosion underneath the car.

Paint

Finished in a traditional and iconic 'Rosso Alfa' red, the paintwork on this car looks excellent for the age and really shows signs of care over the previous 23 years.

The overall finish of the paint has a great amount of lustre to it, with the colour looking even across all the panels.

When getting really closer we noticed a few very minor stone chips to the front bonnet/bumper.

Glass and Trim

All appear in great condition across the car.

The trim and glass look the part with no major signs of damage, cracks, or chips noticed on the visit.

Interior

Embossed cloth seats, combined with luxurious black leather trim and mod cons everywhere you look - introducing a new age of Alfas.

Seats and Carpets

This Spider is fitted with cloth seats which present in great condition throughout, along with the door cards and carpets. We really like the stitched Alfa Romeo detailing on both seats.

There are the slightest signs of age on the driver's bolsters and inner plastic on the roof.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the interior of this car the dashboard and the instrument cluster are clean and smart.

The odometer was showing ~48,000 on our visit, however, the speedo was replaced in 2000 at ~11,350 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Alfa Romeo spider steering wheel and 5-speed manual gearstick are present and appear in great condition.

Mechanics

A raspy 2-litre 16V twin spark propels the Spider forward, with 148 bhp at your disposal.

Engine and Gearbox

Based on the Fiat SuperFIRE-family block, the engine features an Alfa Romeo developed cylinder head with two spark plugs per cylinder and variable inlet cam timing, which allows for 25 degrees of variation, designed to improve torque and give more linear power delivery.

The car started first-time in the mechanical video we conducted.

Suspension and Brakes

The front suspension of the car utilises a conventional setup of MacPherson struts, offset coils, lower wishbones, and an anti-roll bar.

The rear suspension comprises quadrilateral geometry with an upper triangle, double lower arms, coils, and anti-roll bar secured to a light alloy subframe which is, in turn, mounted onto the car's body. This means the car creates a 'rear-wheel steer' effect in the opposite direction to the way the front wheels are being pointed. So the car can positively fly through the first stages of a corner and offers increased stability in the later stages.

David reports to us a very smooth ride with prompt stopping power from the disc brakes.

The Drive

A perfect two-seater roadster for any road trip. With the dashing Pininfarina styling and prompt power delivery to the wheels, not only does the Spider offer driving thrills but also a travel in style wherever you go.

David loves taking the car out on sunny weekends and mentions how zappy this little roadster can be down the country lanes.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with an aftermarket Sony CD player which is reported to be fully working along with the power steering, auto air con, ABS, electric heated door mirrors, electric frameless windows, adjustable headlamps, six speakers, and central locking. David mentioned that the motorised aerial doesn't come up and down as it should.

Presented in Rosso Alfa, the car is in highly original condition.
