Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Hailing from one of Great Britain's premier manufacturers, the Aston Martin DB9 Volante is widely regarded as one of the finest luxury grand tourers of its era.

This very desirable grand tourer was built for 12 years between 2004 and 2016 and hand-assembled in Warwickshire. The car was originally penned by Ian Callum and Henrik Fisker, two designers famous for the concept designs of the Escort Cosworth, RS200, BMW Z8, and many more. With a much sharper design than the DB7, it was fitted with the 5.9L V12 from the Vanquish, had an aluminium construction, and offered outstanding performance. The DB9 was the first model to be built at Aston Martin's Gaydon facility in Warwickshire, and it received an excellent reception from the press when launched.

Coming from a ~13.5-year ownership, this lovely 2005 Aston Martin Volante has been well cared for with regular servicing, even though the car has only covered, on average, ~650 miles a year for the past ~10 years.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I purchased the DB9 as a weekend car, which has been fantastic fun over the past ~13.5 years.

John purchased the DB9 Volante after wanting something to use as a special 'weekend toy'. The low-mileage British sports car came with approximately ~30,300 miles on the clock, and now, just ~5,632 miles later, he has thoroughly enjoyed the car. Even though it’s not been used enormously, it never fails to bring a smile to John’s face.

On one hand, this is a regrettable sale, but on the other, it is going to help his daughter get on the property ladder as some of the proceeds will be going towards a deposit.

Please feel free to ask John any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Despite its design approaching ~20 years of age, the DB9 Volante remains a fantastic-looking car that still holds its own today.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels were replaced in 2018 with a set of new, forged and diamond-cut faced later style DB9 wheels. These are generally in good condition; however, there are a couple of light kerb marks and a small amount of worming, typically seen on diamond-cut wheels.

A matching set of Bridgestone Potenza tyres are fitted, which have a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Looking around the Volante, the bodywork is in very good condition with no noticeable dings or dents to point out. The shut lines all appear to be equal, and the doors, boot, and bonnet open as they should.

As you'll see in the images / videos there are some small areas of blistering on the front corner of the bonnet / wing and also the rear quarter where the roof folds, which is quite common to see on a Volante.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Obsidian Black paintwork appears to be in good condition for its near 20-year age. There are some minor age-related stone chips on the bumper and bonnet, which are in keeping with the mileage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in good condition, with no noticeable scratches or chips and work correctly.

Both headlight lenses are free from excessive scratches and remain free from discolouration.

The electric roof also operates as it should and is in good condition with just a couple of very minor marks caused whilst being folded away; again, this is quite common to see.

Interior

Plenty of beige/biscuit leather and Onyx Piano Black trim give the Volante a modern feel.

Seats and Carpets

The electric leather seats are working as they should. The condition of the leather is very good, with just a few age-related creases, mainly on the driver's seat, which are in keeping with the age.

Both door cards are in good order with no damage or noticeable wear to the handles or switches, and these are capped with Onyx Piano Black cappings.

The black carpets present well with minimal signs of wear. Inside, the boot is clean and tidy, and the warning triangle is present.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in black and beige leather. There are a few minor marks on the lower sections, only noticeable because of the light colour. The Onyx centre section has a bright finish with minimal scratches and houses the satellite navigation screen, which works correctly. This flows down into a silver section, which is also free from any scratches.

The instruments are working correctly with no warning lights displayed, and the odometer is showing just ~35,927 miles at the time of our visit.

Please see the interior gallery for more high-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is in good order with no signs of excessive wear. Gears can be left in automatic mode, or for more spirited driving, the paddle shifters can be used.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The factory 6.0-litre V12 is a musical symphony to your ears.

Engine and Gearbox

With just ~35,927 miles, the well-maintained 6.0-litre V12 fires up on the button and sounds fantastic, with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay, and no issues have been reported by the vendor.

The automatic gearbox has a smooth change when in fully automatic mode or when using the paddle shifters.

Suspension and Brakes

Riding in the DB9, as you would expect for any sports car, is firm but still offers a good level of comfort. In 2023, two new front springs were fitted by Aston Martin, Sevenoaks, along with some relevant nuts and bolts which needed replacing as part of the job.

Large drilled discs and yellow calipers stand out from behind the later-style wheels. These look to be in good condition with no signs of excessive wear to the discs, and no issues have been reported when it comes to stopping the DB9.

The Drive

On the road, the Aston Martin DB9 is an exceptional car to drive. Its luxurious interior, coupled with excellent performance and handling, makes for an outstanding driving experience. The distinct sound of the V12 engine captures attention as you shift through the gears, and deservedly so, the DB9 Volante is a stunning car that turns heads wherever it goes.

Please watch the On the Road video to see the car starting from cold and a run out in the local area.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear inside the DB9 is all in excellent condition. It is quite common to see some wear on the silver buttons, but we are pleased to say that these are all in very good condition.

After an investigation by Aston Martin in 2023 for an AM/FM tuning fault, they installed a new AM/FM tuning module.

History and Paperwork

Two keys, a healthy service book and service invoices, show John has taken care of the DB9 in his ~13.5-year ownership.

With the last service carried out on 07.09.2023 at 35,830 miles, just 102 miles have been covered since then. As mentioned, the service came with two new front springs and a new AM/FM module and came in at £4,074.36, which is another plus point for the future owner of this lovely 2005 DB9 Volante.

The original service book shows a healthy number of stamps carried out by Aston Martin dealers or specialists. The current MOT is valid until 12.09.2024; this passed after a fail from the broken spring, which has been rectified, and there were no other advisories mentioned.

You've come along at the right time to secure yourself a lovely 2005 DB9 Volante with a recent service, just in time for the summer months, when it can be fully appreciated.

We've done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail. This has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything on this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time—we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car—just like a traditional auction house.
