Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Designed by Ian Callum and Henrik Fisker, the Aston Martin DB9 represents a milestone in the marques history, built on the VH platform and featuring a 6.0L V12 engine capable of producing ~450bhp.

Originally released in 2003 and following on from the DB7, the Aston Martin DB9 was a turn of pace for the Aston Martin brand that chose to build the DB9 on the Ford developed VH platform, a change of pace from the previous Jaguar based iterations of Aston Martins.

The DB9 Volante is Aston Martin's convertible offering of the DB9, providing the driver with almost identical performance to the coupé. With a stiffer chassis along with revised and more comfortable suspension, the Volante offers the more casual driver a nice change of pace to the coupé, with top down driving providing the perfect GT experience.

Whilst offering a more casual driving experience the Volante still stands tall in its performance, with the 6.0L V12 naturally aspirated engine providing 450bhp, 570nm of torque, and an impressive 0-60 of just 4.9 seconds - that's seriously quick!

This particular DB9 Volante benefits from having been driven only ~26,100 miles, having nearly full service history with either Aston Martin or a manufacturer specialist, making this a very well presented example through and through.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Graham the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Graham has enjoyed every moment spent with the vehicle and revels in the experience the car offers from a driver's perspective.

There’s no doubt about it, Graham is an Aston Martin fan through and through, having part ex’d his previous Aston Martin DB9 coupé 5.9L V12 for this DB9 Volante 6.0L V12, he wanted to keep enjoying the Aston Martin V12 experience, but with a bit more wind in his hair!

Graham was originally attracted to the car by its Celeste Blue paintwork, the subtle metallic catching his eye from the moment he first saw it. Since purchase Graham and his wife have enjoyed many happy miles in the DB9, however due to health reasons, they do not get to use the car as much as they once did.

With that in mind, Graham has decided to sell the car so that it can be driven and enjoyed by someone who will be able to enjoy the car to its fullest.

Exterior

The shapely silhouette of the DB9 is unaffected by the Volante’s convertible roof and with the roof down, the car only becomes more attractive.

Wheels and Tyres

The 20" aftermarket twenty-spoke alloy wheels sit perfectly within the wheel arches of the DB9 Volante, providing the vehicle with a nicely aggressive stance. The wheels themselves are absolutely free of blemishes as far as we could see, with no signs of curb damage, or other such imperfections - these wheels appear for all intents and purposes to be ‘as new’.

We think they are a great choice and suit the car very well - it's not often we think aftermarket wheels work well, but in this case, 100%.

The tyres are Pirelli P Zero’s and have been fitted to the car for less than two years, during which time the vehicle has seen fewer than 2,000 miles, so these tyres still have plenty of tread left.

Bodywork

The bodywork was photographed thoroughly on the day of our visit, as we do with all our cars, and we could see no evidence of any issues, with all body lines and panel gaps looking straight and true, and no signs of misaligned panels either.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Celeste Blue paintwork is in excellent condition, with no major chips, scratches, or scuffs visible to the exterior paintwork.

There is a minor chip to the inside sill of the drivers door, however this is the only imperfection we could find with the vehicle's paintwork during our time with it.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The vehicle's glass is all in good condition, with no visible cracks, chips, or scratches present on any of the panes.

The surrounding trims are all in matching condition with no signs of heavy oxidation or other such damage, the only noteworthy imperfection surrounding glass and trim would be a ripple to the convertible hood at the top of the rear window, however this does not affect the roof or window in any way.

Interior

The deep blue leather interior is beautifully offset against the paler Celeste Blue exterior, with burl wood dashboard inserts and a modern layout the DB9 Volante is an interior that modestly reminds you of its luxurious design.

Seats and Carpets

The full leather seats are deep blue in colour, with the leather having aged remarkably well over the last 17 years. The seats have developed wrinkles as the hide has broken in over the years, but no visible cracks or rips can be seen anywhere on the seats.

The matching blue carpet has a deep luxurious pile and appears to be in just as good condition as the rest of the vehicle, with no signs of discoloration or excessive wear to be seen.

Dashboard

The dashboard is dressed in deep blue leather in kind with the rest of the interior, and with its beautiful wood centre inlay, it adds yet another level of luxury to the already svelte interior.

With no damage to the leather or wooden inlay, the dashboard looks exactly as it should in a car of this prestige. The odometer and driver information screens are laid out in a symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing manner, providing the driver with all relevant information at a glance.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black leather of the steering wheel stands out against the otherwise blue interior, hinting at the driver centric focus of the car. The leather is in good condition, not overly worn and with all stitching in good condition and unbroken, with the Aston Martin logo in the centre of the wheel serving as a reminder of the quality beneath your fingertips.

Mechanics

With only ~26,100 miles on the odometer, this DB9 Volante is still very much in its prime, with absolutely no record of mechanical issues in its history, the 6.0L V12 is ready and raring to go.

Engine and Gearbox

The hand built Aston Martin 6.0L V12 is capable of 450bhp, 570Nm of torque, and a 0-60 of just 4.9 seconds. Having travelled a meagre ~26,100 miles there is very little to fault with this engine, it starts and stops on the button, idles and revs without issue - both cold and hot.

Please watch the "On the Road" video to see the car being started from cold, then run when up to temperature. We also ran the car at revs, after the trip out, to see if any audible "tick" was present when idling, this being a later block, we couldn't detect any noise. Watch the video to see for yourself.

The 6 speed Touchtronic gearbox is also in its prime, showing no signs of age or wear - every gear change is buttery smooth and fast, leaving the driver with no doubt as to the precision engineering going on below them.

Suspension and Brakes

During our time spent with the vehicle we noted that the brakes looked to be almost new in their appearance, with absolutely no lip on the front discs and only the slightest evidence of a lip on the rear discs. Likewise the callipers and pads appear to be in great condition too and had no difficulty in bringing the car to a precise and controlled stop during our time on the road.

The car is fitted with slightly lowered springs (25mm lower), bringing a more aggressive look to the car overall, but also lowering the cars centre of gravity and marginally improving the already fantastic handling.

The Drive

As is to be expected from a car of this calibre, every aspect of your drive in the DB9 Volante is a performance - and an excellent one at that. From the moment you start the car you are reminded of the prestige and elegance that Aston Martin delivers, the dashboard presenting you with the message “Power, beauty, soul” on the first turn of the key, followed by the astounding roar of the V12 engine firing up in front of you. After that the drive is very much as you would expect; sublime.

With comfort, power, and precision the DB9 powers round corners, pulls up hills, and cruises with ease. The DB9 is sat on a glass pedestal in the Grand Tourer category, providing an experience above and beyond that of almost any other.

Electrics and Other

The electrical systems on this car are many, from the push to start, the powered roof, electronically adjustable and heated seats, all the way down to the basics like radio, headlights, and air conditioning. During our time spent with the vehicle we made sure all of these were working, of which all bar none worked perfectly.

The roof takes approximately 17 seconds to go up or down, which it does without fault.

Overall there is nothing to note when it comes to the electronic systems of the vehicle, as all appear to be working faultlessly on the day of our visit.

History and Paperwork

With a nearly fully stamped service book from Aston Martin or a marque specialist, this DB9 Volante comes with all the assurance you could need, including its most recent service less than 100 miles ago with Aston Martin Sevenoaks.

From its first service at just 1,187 miles, to its most recent service at 26,060, this DB9 Volante has been serviced by Aston Martin themselves or a marque specialist, as can be seen from the stamped service book. The vehicle comes with 2 keys and all relevant documents from Aston Martin.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Graham, have you removed the EVHC ‘Vehicle Health Check’ document from the images? As per a post below they state that it said the vehicle needs £7.5k of recommended work. Is this the case? Thanks, David

thanks for your swift response, has the tyres been changed ?and has the suspension been altered to the factory spec and why has am suggested that the disc/pads need changing ?
.i am not trying to restrict the value or this car, however its discription is NOT ACCURATE and in my opion needs redressing,we all acept that second hand cars need some work but 10K is just a bit rich .
