Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A true style icon, the DB9 Volante offers panache and refinement in a timeless package.

The Aston Martin DB9 is possibly the most significant model by the prestigious manufacturer. Fiercely independent, Aston Martin retains its low-volume premium exclusivity and is one the few British car companies to have not compromised its heritage. The DB9 encompasses those attributes, by retaining a design purity that is unmistakably recognisable and set the DNA for all future Aston Martins. At its best for the gentle sweeping bends of the A-roads, the DB9 is equally at home on the boulevards as it is on the long-distance dashes.

This 2006 Volante has seen a rather cherished life, with less than 5,000 miles covered over the last 10 years. With excellent service history and evidence that the car has been well cared for, this is a perfect opportunity to experience the effortless performance of a V12, combined with a beautifully crafted interior encompassed in one of the most appealing-looking cars of the past 20 years.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Alan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The roar of the exhaust and acceleration is awesome, there aren't many V12 engines on the road these days.

Alan has always had a taste for refined British cars and took the Aston Martin DB9 on in the summer of 2021. Focused on driving enjoyment, the ability to put a smile on his face is all he's ever asked of the DB9. Used as an occasional weekend driver, mobility issues are the main reason why he's reluctantly selling the car.

It comes to market from ~1.5 year ownership, and the previous owner had the car for some ~9 years, with Alan having covered ~1,000 miles in his ownership. He will be on hand to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Svelte and poised, the subtle presence of the DB9 is only bettered by its very clean condtion.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with a set of 19" Aston Martin "Speedline" alloys, they are in super condition having seen a refurb in the recent past, although there is a small amount of peel noted on the near side front wheel.

The Bridgestone Potenza's are over 10 years old, with the car having covered a modest mileage in the recent past, and the front items are flagged up as advisory. View the gallery to see the detail across the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The body shell and structure aspects of the car are in excellent shape, with no observations of any panel damage. Panels fit flush with even gaps, and the doors opening and closing with ease, although the bonnet gas struts are going to need replacement. These cars can sometime suffer from reaction where the aluminium panels touch steel etc, but none was observed on our visit.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Painted in the Aston Martin colour of "Meteorite Silver", it is in excellent shape throughout, with very little in terms of marks. The coverage displays a good lustre, with a deep shine. There are the lightest of marks in places but the overall presentation is excellent considering the age of the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

With evidence that the car has seen consistent indoor storage, the rubbers are free of natural elements. The glass is intact throughout, with no noticeable issues in terms of the trim. The lenses are intact, looking fresh with no signs of age noted.

Interior

Crafted to near perfection, the cabin has retained its quality and still looks smart to this day.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in line with a lightly used car of this age, finished in a smart black leather with only minor wear noted on the drives seat bolsters. The stitching looks great, with the rear items looking presentable with the odd mark.

The carpets are decent, with no suggestions of dampness as to be expected from a dry stored car. They have worn well and a good deep clean will provide a positive outcome. The boot appears to be hardly used and comes with its original dealer-issue umbrella, a nice touch.

Dashboard

The dashboard retains its factory finish with very little in terms of wear noted on the controls and dials. The centre console is in good shape, just the occasional mark. This car is finished with piano black trim, and so doesn't suffer from the de-lamination that you often see to wood veneer on this era of Aston Martin dashboards.

The binnacle looks good, with the chrono-watch-inspired dials looking as good as they did when new. The sat-nav wasn’t tested, as the owner hasn’t used it but like all of the controls, is said to be fully operational. The door cards are good, with the headlining looking tidy with no signs of dampness.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel displays well with no outstanding signs of wear, a simple affair in black. The automatic gear selector buttons on the centre console all present well too.

Mechanics

As smooth as silk, the V12 roar cannot fail to stir your emotions, Aston Martin hit the sweet spot with this GT.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start video did not present any issues, the car idles well with no excessive emissions observed. No untoward noises occurred while the engine was running, and on the move, the V12 performed faultlessly. We also ran the car at revs, after the trip out, to see if any audible "tick" was present when idling, this being a later block, we couldn't detect any noise. Watch the video to see for yourself.

The gear shifts were seamless, with no issues with kick-down. All warning lights remained off throughout.

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides well, with a typical supple but absorbent suspension dealing with the country roads without any knocking or thuds. The braking is excellent and demonstrated to stop the car without pulling. The steering is free of play, with no suggestion of creaks on the move.

The Drive

Always an event to experience the majestic V12 Aston, the car effortlessly glides through the smooth lanes, with a relaxing manner and cosseting ride. It's still, after all these years a delight to realise how quiet the car is at cruising speed. The owner pointed out how easy the car is to drive too, with the steering offering a good feel. The engine wasn't opened with any passion, as the opportunity didn't present itself on the day, but its effortless acceleration and promise of that V12 rumble are intoxicating and it certainly feeds the desire.

Electrics and Other

All of the electrics work on the car to Alans knowledge, watch the review video to see the soft-top operation in action. The owner has not reported any issues with oil pressure or engine temperature problems, with the fan remaining off throughout the visit.

History and Paperwork

Regular stamps and careful ownership profiles compliment the already fine presentation, with modest mileage for this model, it is well worth good look if you're in the market for a DB9 Volante.

The car comes with a healthy amount of main dealer stamps, with regular visits to Aston Martin agents. The car will be sold with a new service currently being actioned. It also comes with an MOT to June 2023 and retains its factory spec trickle charger.

Please note, the private registration number is not included with the sale, it will be returned to the age related registration number.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

I asked about the air conditioning. Can you confirm if it is in good working order. Seems to be a common problem on DB9s.
