Introduction

Alan
Automotive Photographer

The Quattro is one of those names that makes all true petrolheads a little weak at the knees and this low mileage example will certainly get collectors' bidding.

The Audi 80 is truely an iconic car and arguably best remembered during its golden years in the '80s when that all important 'Quattro' name was one of the most desirable terms in motoring back then.

The B2 / 4 door body was launched in the late '70s and it was a step change in design that was created by the famous Giorgetto Giugiaro - as you will already know, he has been responsible for designing some of the most beautiful cars ever made.

This is a January 1984 car making it a pre-facelift model - it has the twin exhaust pipes, rear and front spoiler that were fitted to the Quattro.

This is a very special and original car that is just showing 23,958 miles on the clock - a rare find that will make it especially attractive to investors and collectors alike.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Nick the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The history of this car and low mileage meant I had to buy it and look after it over time.

Nick, the current owner, bought the car about 5 years ago from his friend Robert that had to sell it due to a move abroad. Robert bought the car in 2011 from the first owner that had done the majority of the mileage and his intention was to recommission it fully and use as his classic, however, his international move put an end to those plans and that's when Nick stepped in to take over.

Nick has used the car on his private land during his ownership and improved the car by carrying out any mechanical work whilst of course maintaining its originality.

Nick is on hand to answer any questions you may have in the comments section below.

Exterior

Presented in original condition with nothing hidden - a time warp car for the Quattro collector.

Wheels and Tyres

The original steel wheels are present with their trims and they are in original condition with just minor scuff marks to the plastic.

A set of 175/40/14 Sava Perfecta tyres have been fitted and have a good amount of tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks to be in original condition, as you would expect from such a low mileage car.

The doors open and shut with that reassuring Germanic quality of engineering, and the shut lines and panel gaps look good across the car.

We did notice a slight ding in the roof that you can see slightly in the video.

Please study all the images and watch the videos to see the full condition of the bodywork.

Paint

The paintwork looks good across the car - you'll see the panels look even in both finish and colour.

Nick considered having the bonnet resprayed due to the patch of paint issue that you'll see in the picture. However, after consideration he decided to leave the bonnet as it is to show the originality of the car and let the new owner decide.

The flat surfaces may need some attention in the future, i.e. roof and rear boot - but it's good to see the originality of the car.

Please study all the image and videos to assess the condition of the paint for yourself.

Glass and Trim

Again, all looks good and original across the car and importantly the white Audi rings are present on the front grill.

We just noticed some missing / damaged trim on the corners of the front bumper.

Interior

It's like stepping back in time to 1984 when you sit in this original and little-used Quattro.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in very good and original condition.

The carpets are excellent and they give a good indication to the originality of the car.

We noticed a mark on the driver's seat and a bit of sun damage on the rear seats around the headrest area.

Dashboard

All present and correct and in excellent condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car has its original steering wheel and gear stick fitted - the wear on both items backs up the authenticity of the car.

Mechanics

Audi were four-wheel drive pioneers and this car was their first proper family car to feature the drive train.

Engine and Gearbox

The robust and respected 2,144cc engine is fitted and it sounded excellent as you'll hear in the cold start video - there were no issues observed on our visit and it burst into life with its raspy sound.

Nick has carried out engine maintenance when required and this included CDI ignition unit, hall sensor and new coil. Also, a new master cylinder and slave cylinder were fitted to the clutch.

Nick assures us the car performs well and all the gears function as expected.

Suspension and Brakes

No issues were observed on our visit and Nick assures us the car's suspension and brakes perform well.

Nick tells us that he has actually overhauled the brakes and fitted new seals to the pistons.

The Drive

Of course due to current restrictions we couldn't go out in the car, also it's on a SORN and has only been used around Nick's land in recent years. However, Nick does assure us that the car drive without fault.

Electrics and Other

The car has electric front windows and also central locking - both of which were tested on our visit and worked well. The central locking is quite a complicated set up as parts are pneumatically controlled.

History and Paperwork

Nick is just the third owner of the car with the second owner being his friend and first having owned it for 27 years and completed the majority of the 24k miles - rare history indeed.

There's no doubt about it, this is an investor quality car that benefits from low ownership and backed up with a good level of history.

The recent owners have maintained the originality and now it's ready for a collector to take on and action work to their exacting standards.

In our opinion this is a car to improve further, e.g. complete a professional finish on the bonnet that exactly matches the rest of the car and then use sparingly and keep it in tip-top condition. It feels like an excellent investment as you don't see cars come up like this every day.

The car comes with a set of additional alloy wheels.

We've actioned checks on: Seller ID, V5C and the car is HPi clear - the V5C is in Robert's name, the previous owner, as it was not changed when Nick bought it from him.
