Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consignor

The beginning of Audi’s golden era is forever immortalised by the original Quattro - boxy design, punchy 2.2L turbo and all wheel drive system came together to create a world beater.

Announced at the Geneva motor show in 1980, the Audi Quattro was a revolutionary design, with its box arches and state of the art all wheel drive system placing the Quattro on a pedestal no other manufacturer at the time could hope to match. Taking the all wheel drive system from their military program, a team of Swedish Audi engineers came up with the concept of creating an all wheel drive road going performance car. Combined with Audi’s punchy 5 cylinder 2.2L turbo-charged engine, the Audi Quattro offered staggering performance straight out of the factory and soon became a very exclusive package. Also finding great acclaim in the motorsport world, Audi dominated group B rallying for some time using its fantastic Quattro AWD system to stave off the competition.

This particular example comes to market from ~1 year ownership, is well presented in "Alpine White" with silver wheels, and grey leather interior. The car has covered ~109,800 miles, and comes with 19 service stamps over time, more recently it has had a service including cambelt and water pump, and the previous owner overhauled the suspension, this is a well maintained example.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Rizvan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Quattro is hellishly good fun, with very little to complain about, I’ve enjoyed every mile I’ve driven in it.

Rizvan purchased the car in July 2022, having settled on this particular example due to its good history of maintenance and the generally well kept appearance. He's made sure to keep up with maintenance, having had the car serviced at the end of 2022 as well as replacing the cambelt and water pump less than a month ago. To his knowledge the Quattro is in original condition apart from a Miltek stainless steel exhaust.

Rizvan is now looking to move into something new, potentially a Porsche 911 Turbo, and is looking to sell his Quattro to fund a new car. He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comment section below.

Exterior

With its iconic flared wheel arches and sporting spoiler, the rallying heritage is clear to see and inspires thoughts of fast, high octane fun.

Wheels and Tyres

The multi spoke alloy wheels are in good condition and present well for their age. There are no signs of visible curbing or corrosion on the face or lip of any of the wheels. Dressed in Bridgestone Potenza tyres, there is plenty of tread left on all four corners and none of the sidewalls appear to be damaged or perished either. DOT marked 2009, the tyres are fairly old but otherwise in good condition.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Quattro is well preserved, with no evidence of any major knocks or bangs evident in the bodylines - all of which show with even gaps and line up as expected. Likewise the bodywork appears free from any major corrosion, with the only questionable point being a small area on the front lip of the bonnet edge which appears to have a crack in the paintwork and looks to be showing the beginnings of corrosion.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Alpine White" paintwork is in good condition, with no major scrapes or scratches to be seen on any of the panels and generally holding a good level of gloss across the car. There are less than a handful of stone chips on the front end too, testament to the care and maintenance the car has seen over the years. The car comes with a tin of body shop mixed touch up paint which has been sparingly used over the years to touch up some minor marks on the paintwork and prevent corrosion.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car is in excellent condition, free of any chips, cracks, or scratches.

With doors featuring the logo decal, and the rear windows being adorned with "Quattro" decals, Audi’s branding is subtle, but on point. The surrounding trims are all in good condition too, with no majorly perished items to speak of.

Interior

Coming highly specced from the factory; retro digital display, along with a number of other hi-tech features and a full leather interior.

Seats and Carpets

The grey leather interior is in general good condition, with expected wear to the drivers seat bolster but otherwise well looked after hide can be seen both front and back, free of any splits or rips.

Likewise the carpets are in good condition, with no major damage or colour loss to be seen in any of the footwells. The car also comes with three out of four of the original mats for the car too.

Dashboard

The dashboard presents well, with no major wear to be seen on the dash upper or centre console, and all switchgear is present and correct too. However sadly the aftermarket stereo does not work, Rizvan has not had this checked out and presumes the head unit itself is dead as opposed to a deeper seated issue.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel shows signs of wear to the leather, this is expected with a car of this age and mileage, however the leather itself is not damaged and is only worn.

The gear stick is in better condition, with less wear than the steering wheel and is fairly well presented for the age and mileage of the car, but being a manual gearbox this is still a high traffic area and does show some signs of age.

Mechanics

Some consider the punchy turbo charged engine, short, wide wheel base and all wheel drive system a perfect mix on the mechanics.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.2L five cylinder turbo-charged engine in the Audi Quattro delivers remarkable performance, producing ~220bhp in a chassis weighing less than 1,400kg. During our ‘cold start’ video the engine started first time and without issue, idling well and revving nicely. Likewise the engine performed well during our ‘On The road’ video, providing smooth acceleration and linear power delivery throughout the rev range.

The gearbox also performed faultlessly, changing gears easily and without any grinding or stiffness. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The Audi Quattro has stiff suspension, this is to be expected given its motorsport heritage and performance focus, however this doesn’t impact too greatly on the ride comfort, with the Quattro still providing adequate comfort for the occupants. The handling is precise and well engineered, boosted by the Quattro’s revolutionary AWD system. The pervious owner overhauled the suspension on this car, as can be seen from the underside images.

The brakes work well all round, showing no signs of brake fade after being out on the road and bringing the car to a stop quickly and efficiently. The discs look to be in good condition, with no major lipping to be seen on any of the four corners.

The Drive

The Audi Quattro was a truly revolutionary design, paving the way for all performance focused Audi’s going forward and cementing the Quattro branding in history.

With its motorsport heritage this group B performer drives as you would expect, providing undeniable performance in every aspect, handling, acceleration, and speed are all boxes ticked by the Quattro. Needless to say, the Audi Quattro truly needs to be driven to be appreciated.

Electrics and Other

For the most part the electrics on the car are in fully working order, with the only exceptions being the aftermarket head unit and the passenger side window. Rizvan believes the window issue is simply a faulty switch and has ordered a new switch in hopes of rectifying the issue.

There is also an aftermarket alarm system fitted to the car, however it is not working, it does not stop the car from running normally though.

History and Paperwork

Well presented and coming to market with a decent service history, recent important works like belts and waterpump, a clean MOT, it is very much ready to be driven and enjoyed.

First registered on 22.01.1988, this Audi Quattro is painted in "Alpine White" with contrasting grey Audi decals. Free of any major issues this is a well presented and looked after example that is ready to be driven, the car has been looked after by main dealers and specialists up to 102,390, after which a lot of money has been spent on it with many invoices. Despite its relatively high mileage this car comes with a clean MOT with no advisories that expires on 30.11.2023, testament to the recent works; suspension overhaul by the former keeper, major service including belts and waterpump at the end of last year in the current ownership. One of the previous owners is believed to have been involved in running the Quattro Owner's Club, with many newsletters found in the documentation.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
