Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

With its black paint, wheels, and badges, this R8 has a distinctly menacing look.

It's hard to believe the R8 has been around for almost 20 years, having made its debut at the Paris Auto Show in September 2006 - Audi's bold foray into the mid-engined supercar market. The R8 notably featured in the first Iron Man film as Tony Stark’s personal car, a smart marketing move by Audi. It went on to appear in five more Marvel films.

Originally launched with the 4.2L V8 engine from the RS4, paired with the Quattro all-wheel-drive system, the R8 was available with both a gated manual or the R Tronic automatic gearbox. In 2008, Audi further equipped the R8 with the 5.2L V10 from its sister model, the Lamborghini Gallardo. The R8 stands out with its unique style, featuring contrasting side blades behind the doors and pioneering LED daytime running lights—the first car to incorporate such lighting.

This specific car is a 2008 Audi R8, fitted with the 4.2L V8 engine and the desirable gated manual gearbox. It comes to market after approximately two years with its current owner, complete with the original service book, two sets of keys, and a valid MOT until 27 July 2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

David spent almost a year searching for the right R8; his dream car.

A total joy to drive, David told us that you always feel in control with the Quattro system and the bulletproof German engineering. He appreciated the unique specification of this R8, noting that it has been well looked after, receiving a full respray and front-end PPF to protect the finish.

David loves the custom exhaust, stating that the standard exhaust doesn't do the V8 justice. This custom system puts a smile on your face without being overly loud.

With plenty of experience in supercars, David said the R8 is the easiest to drive while still being great fun. A new venture has arisen for him, so he is reluctantly selling the R8 through us - he mentioned that the new owner will have many thrilling miles ahead.

David is happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

A full respray has been completed on this R8, with PPF applied to protect the finish.

Wheels and Tyres

The original five twin-spoke alloys are finished in gloss black to match the paintwork. They all appear to be in great condition, with no visible damage on any of the wheels.

The car is fitted with a full matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, all of which are also in excellent condition, with plenty of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the R8 appears to be in great condition, with no major issues observed. The doors, bonnet, and engine cover all open and close with ease. However, we did notice some slight imperfections in the paint around the kick plates on the inside of both doors.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The black paint finish was very good with an even coverage and nice lustre. We did notice some slight nicks in the paint on the driver's door edge.

The front end has PPF fitted, we noticed some polish in the gaps between the PPF on the bonnet crease line on both sides.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the R8 appears to be in good condition, with no noticeable cracks or discolouration on the windscreen. If being particular, we did spot some very minor stone chips.

All the badges have been blacked out and are in good condition, though we did notice a small piece of trim broken in the grille of the driver's side intake. Additionally, the bottom of the tail lights show some stress marks.

Interior

The driver-focused cabin features a centrepiece gated manual gearbox.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats are in good condition, although the driver's seat shows some wear on the bolster, which is expected for a car of this age and mileage.

The black carpets are also in great condition, with little evidence of wear noted.

Dashboard

The dashboard, featuring its two main dials, is in great condition, with no misting observed. We didn't notice any damage on the dashboard. The odometer read ~77,046 miles at the time of our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original leather Audi steering wheel is in great condition, with only light signs of wear noted.

The metal gear knob does show some signs of use but does not detract from the overall appearance of the cabin.

Mechanics

A custom exhaust brings the V8 to life, and the click-clack of the manual gearbox adds to the visceral experience of the R8.

Engine and Gearbox

The V8 thundered to life on the first attempt, sounding fantastic with the custom exhaust system. On the road, the power delivery was smooth, and the sound was addictive.

The manual gearbox engaged gears without issue, with no crunching or grinding observed.

Suspension and Brakes

The R8's suspension felt tight during our short drive with David's friend Matthew, and we didn't hear any unwanted noises from underneath the car.

The brakes brought the R8 to a stop effectively, as you'd expect from a sports car, with no pulling noted in the steering.

The Drive

The R8 offers a thrilling driving experience, delivering plenty of power and agility. The addition of the custom exhaust gives this car more soul compared to the standard exhaust.

The Quattro system instills confidence in the driver, providing ample grip in the corners. To see and hear the R8 in motion, please watch the "On The Road" video below.

Electrics and Other

We didn't test all the electrical components of the car during our visit but the radio, windows and electric seats were all working - David told us everything else was in working order,

History and Paperwork

The R8 comes with its original service booklet, featuring 10 service stamps.

With a substantial amount of paperwork, the R8 has been well maintained over the years. It has been resprayed in its original colour, with PPF applied to the front end to preserve the finish.

Recent work includes a new shock absorber and brake clean in July 2023, a new oil/temp sender unit in July 2020, and a new battery in May 2020.

The R8 is coming to market after approximately two years with David, showing ~77,046 miles on the clock. It includes two sets of keys and a current MOT valid until 27 July 2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    One more:
The passenger Airbag is off – do you have a diagnosis for that?

    Hi David,

Can you please let me know:
    – Are these Magride or standard dampers?
    – Has any of the suspension linkage been changed? (upgraded to V10)
    – Has any carbon cleaning been done on the engine?
    – Have the disc brakes and tyres been replaced recently (before the last MOT)?
    – Has this issue been addressed? “Nearside Play in steering rack inner joint(s)”

    Thanks,
    Ciprian

    Hello

Who fitted the brake discs to the car? The brake discs are rotational which is shown by the dotted pattern. The driver side front disc is fitted the wrong way around whereas all other discs follow the correct pattern.

Looks like the passenger part has been fitted to the drivers side whereas all others are correct.

    Hi,

Does the AC work? Has the compressor been replaced at any point in the cars life?

    Thanks

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
