For a brand that is best known for worthy but fairly ordinary saloons, the announcement that Audi would release a supercar was met with feverish anticipation. Based on the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car with Lamborghini underpinnings, Audi made a huge impact in the supercar A-list when finally launched in 2006. By offering Audis traits of everyday usability combined with unbelievable poise and grip, the brand has managed to retain the charisma of an Italian thoroughbred with Audi's reputation for engineering and quality. Two engines were available, a 4.2-litre V8 and this higher-spec version powered by an incredibly sounding 518 bhp 5.2-litre V10. Based on the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 power plant, it goes without saying that the performance is quite simply astonishing.

We are proud to present this former Audi UK press car, notable for its appearance on Top Gear. This manual R8 has been tastefully modified with a black trim overhaul, to complement the white paintwork. One of my bucket list cars. I just had to see what the fuss was all about. I was not disappointed!

Ben had always wanted to own the R8, as it offers performance ability with a touch of class. While the car has been in his ownership, he has kept the car in his warm heated unit, and there's plenty of evidence to suggest that previous owners also kept the car garaged overnight. Like all good things, the moment has passed with the Audi, as he needs to free up funds to renovate a newly acquired home before moving in.

Exterior

The de-chrome upgrade works surprisingly well, showcasing the brutality of the design vision.

Wheels and Tyres

The 19" alloy have been powder-coated black, which would have been silver when original. They are generally in good condition, with no significant kerbing or damage - just a few small age-related chips and blemishes. The Pirelli P-Zero tyres age from 2013 to 2016 and are in good condition, the sidewalls looking good and plenty of tread in all four.

Bodywork

The R8 was based on the Le Mans Quattro concept car, and when it came to production the original design vision was entirely present.

The bodywork is in excellent order, no evidence of repair or replacement panels. The panel gaps are tight and even, and shut lines the same across the car.

Paint

The paintwork is factory fresh, with a deep finish and gloss expected from an Audi. It has seen a handful of touch-ups, including the front bumper and door handles.

We noticed a little light scraping on the right-hand side lower section of the front bumper, possibly the result of a minor clipping of the kerb, but little else to report. Take a look at the video review for the detail.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in excellent condition. The trim has been subject to recolouring as mentioned, the original items would have been finished in gun-metal, and all exterior trim has been painted black.

The badges and trim are in black too - the off-side V10 badge is missing but overall have been finished to a good standard. The rear right plastic lower vent has minor scratches. The car will also come with its original mounts for the front number plate.

Interior

Craftmanship combined with some beautiful design details is just one of the R8's many talents.

Seats and Carpets

Electrically adjustable leather seats with deep bolsters to keep you positioned firm in the drivers seating when in command of that V10.

The seats have evidence of age-related wear, a small bit of stitching has come loose around the bolster, but generally the drivers seat has held up very well over the years. Overall the leather has worn well and shows no other significant issues. The mats are a little tired, but the carpet is in good shape across the car.

Dashboard

A mix of leather and carbon fibre trim around the dashboard and other areas of the interior give this car that wow factor inside.

No issues with the visual aspect of the dashboard, it's in very good condition and the dials and controls are said to be fully functional. The glove box doesn't open fully though. In the rear section, there is a crack in the plastic around the rear glovebox lock.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The star of the show in this interior, that open gated 6 speed manual gear shifter. Like the dashboard, the steering wheel and gearbox have worn the years very well and there are no major problems with the quality of finish.

Mechanics

Rapid with a dark personality, the V10 R8 is a serious piece of kit. This car will give you goosebumps!

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with the 5.2L V10, the sound and power from this engine is a thing of wonder, accentuated by the open top experience. This example is coupled with the manual 6 speed gearbox, a real delight in a car like this and not very often found.

The Audi was subject to a very cold start, with outside temperatures approaching -5 degrees, but of course being an Audi it started up with no issues at all. The condensation smoke dissipated after the idling had dropped down once the engine warmed up. All the dashboard lights remained off after start up and there was no evidence of fluid leaks.

Suspension and Brakes

The car comes with a comprehensive service history charting its life. The car rides nicely, with no unexpected noises from the suspension or brakes. The discs and pads have lots of life left.

The Drive

The car's performance obviously dominates the experience, but while in motion, there were no rattles or creaks from the drive. The clever Quattro four-wheel-drive system keeps the car planted on the road, there are very few experiences that match the Audis ability to perform its numerous tasks so well. It manages to be perfectly usable around town, but the open road is where this car really deserves to be used.

Electrics and Other

The soft-top roof is in excellent condition and all electrical items are said to be fully functional. The comprehensive tool kit is complete too.

History and Paperwork

This R8, a 5.2L Spyder example with the manual 6 speed gearbox presents beautifully and is ready for a new owner to enjoy.

The Audi was registered by Bicester Audi in 2010 and has seen 9 owners over its lifetime, but also comes with Audi history. The car has also received recent attention to the clutch which was replaced in 2018.

This example was a former press car for Audi, and one of its most notable appearances was on Top Gear where Jeremy Clarkson talks about how good that V10 sounds (amongst other things as he does).
