Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consignor

Its elegant and timeless design make the Austin-Healey a real head turner, it's a usable classic capable of keeping up with modern traffic too.

First introduced in 1956, the Austin-Healey 100 is a four-seater roadster designed and built by Donald Healey. Just one year later, the 2.6 litre straight-six was improved by adding another 16bhp by altering the inlet manifold, fitting larger valves and increasing the compression ratio. The end result creates an impressive improvement in mid range power, serving to round out the car's performance across the board.

This particular example comes to us in very presentable condition, having had previous restoration works carried out to resolve chassis corrosion as well as having been fettled by current owner, coming to market from ~4 years.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Charlie the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I hadn’t owned a classic car for a number of years and I had the hankering for a proper British roadster, this 100/6 was so nice that I couldn’t say no, in fact I even built a garage for it!

Charlie first purchased the Austin-Healey 100/6 in September 2019, after deciding he really wanted to be behind the wheel of a classic car again. After making the decision he started shopping around and decided on this lovely example we have here today. After settling on the car he knew it couldn’t be left outside and so, being a builder by trade, built himself a garage for his newest pride and joy.

Throughout his ownership Charlie has done plenty of tinkering, fettling, and polishing, bringing the car up to scratch and making sure it is always looking its best. He will be happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The two-tone blue over white paintwork serves to perfectly highlight the curvaceous and beautifully designed bodywork.

Wheels and Tyres

Since purchasing the car Charlie has refurbished the 72 spoke wire spoke wheels which are enamel painted, fitting with the original design of the car. These are in excellent condition and do not show any signs of corrosion or damage.

Likewise the tyres were replaced at the same time, DOT marked 2021. These are in good condition and, having seen only a few hundred miles, have plenty of tread left across the board.

Bodywork

The Austin-Healey is wonderfully presented throughout, with the bodywork being free of any visible damage or dents. Likewise all panel gaps line up beautifully and all exterior brightwork is in good condition with the exception of some extremely light pitting in a handful places.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Ice Blue" over "Ivory White" two-tone paintwork is in excellent condition, we didn't notice a stone chip or scratch anywhere on the car. The vehicle has had paintwork in the past however we were hard pressed to find any evidence of a repaint, indicating the work was carried out to an extremely high standard.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is in excellent condition, free of any chips, scratches, or cracks. Likewise the surrounding trim is in good condition and the side windows are in good condition too, however Charlie prefers to leave these off the car along with the soft top as he keeps the car garaged and never drives the car with the roof on. As a result of this the roof is in excellent condition too, being free of any splits, rips, or tears.

Interior

Whilst small by today's standards, the cabin is still a comfortable and enjoyable place to be, dark blue leather and contrasting white piping, the interior is beautifully paired to the exterior.

Seats and Carpets

The dark blue leather of the interior is in excellent condition, with no damage to be seen anywhere on the hide. Likewise the white piping is in great condition too. Charlie tells us he has tidied up the interior somewhat over the years and this is visible in the condition of the cabin. Under the rubber floor mats the footwell carpets can be seen to be in excellent condition, suffering from no major wear or colour bleaching as can be common in older cars.

Dashboard

The matching blue leather dashboard is in excellent condition too, showing no major signs of wear or tear and with no visible damage to note. Likewise all switchgear is present and correct and in fully working order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden Moto-Lita steering wheel is in keeping with the rest of the cabin, showing no major wear and tear and is otherwise in excellent condition.

The simple black knobbed gear stick is in good condition too, with the white gear layout still present and untouched by time.

Mechanics

The sound of the 3.0L straight-six is absolutely brilliant, rekindling nostalgic memories of classic motoring.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3-litre engine can be seen sitting resplendently in the engine bay, having been repainted in the classic green colour. During our ‘Cold Start’ video you can see the engine start without hesitation and idle confidently. Likewise during our ‘On The Road’ video you can see the car drive, accelerating with ease and not struggling in the slightest to keep up with traffic.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride comfort of the healey is surprisingly supple for such a small car and while this level of comfort usually comes at the cost of handling, the car also handles very astutely on the B-Roads. Braking effort is nice and strong, with the brakes feeling sharp below the pedal and even across the car.

The front brakes on the Healey have been upgraded from the standard drums to servo assisted disc brakes.

The Drive

The Austin-Healey is a fun, enjoyable, and nostalgic car to drive. With the roof down the car transforms into the perfect B-Road roadster, weekend driver, or everyday car. The versatile little 100/6 is an ultimately usable classic, with enough grunt to keep up with modern traffic to boot.

Electrics and Other

The electrical items of the Austin-Healey all work as expected, with all lights, clocks, gauges, and switchgear operating correctly and Charlie is not aware of any issues.

History and Paperwork

This well presented, original example of the iconic Austin Healey 100/6 comes painted in Ice Blue over Ivory White, with dark blue leather interior, it is ready for a new owner to enjoy and cherish.

Coming to market from ~4 years of ownership with current owner Charlie, this lovely example of Austin Healey’s 100/6 has been well looked after with only 7 owners in the last 60 years. The odometer reads ~9,500 miles however this mileage cannot be verified. Both mechanically and cosmetically this car looks to be in very good condition, clean inside, outside, and even underneath.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
