Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Consigner and Editor

The very definition of a muscular sports car with a magical soundtrack; the 'Big Healey' is one of the all-time greats.

The Austin Healey 100 series instantly struck a chord with buyers, particularly in the States, whose success dictated the car's evolution. In 1956, it was fitted with a more powerful engine and for the first time configured as a 2+2, to become the 100/6. Subtle design changes were also carried out but nothing was lost in the upgrade and was placed as the ultimate 100/6 model before the Healey became the 3000.

The 'Big Healey’s' have a positive reputation as a demanding drive, and its appeal as a beast to master is why it continues to resonate with classic car owners. Yet despite the raw power, it comes with modest running costs and a second-to-none parts availability and expertise.

Restored between 1991 and 1994, this 1958 Abingdon-built 2+2 BN4 Overdrive model was originally a California LHD car and converted into RHD. The restoration has been sensitively carried out by respected specialists, who have enhanced the characteristics of the Healey by fitting all-round disc brakes, a 3-litre engine with an unleaded head conversion and refurbishing the cabin without additional modern frivolities.

It comes with a box folder of invoices, outlining the restoration process, maintenance and upkeep since 1991. It has been owned by just three keepers since it was restored, one keeping the car for ~25 years. It was last serviced in June 2023 and its last MOT was issued in September 2023 with no advisories.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Danny the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Strong evidence to suggest that each one of the previous owners has kept on top of the maintenance.

Once the extensive 3-year restoration was finished, the car's first keeper appeared to have gone out and fully enjoyed the Healey. It was sold to an owner in Kent who then kept it for ~25 years. Its use slowed during their ownership but they diligently kept on top of the car's maintenance and yearly MOTs.

Since taking the car on a few months ago, Danny (the current owner) feels it needs to find a new home to ensure it's used on a more regular basis.

Danny will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Completely rebuilt to a high standard in the 90's, the quality of its restoration still holds up well today.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels are neatly presented with tight spokes. There are mild signs of age on the rims but they are all damage-free.

The Maxxis tyres are over 10 years old but have legal and even tread.

Bodywork

The chassis members and outriggers appear solid, with no issues noted on the front cross member - please view the images to assess the condition yourself.

The panel fit is positive, with a smooth flush fit. We didn’t see any damage to the metalwork. The door gaps are even and open easily without sagging, although the passenger door needs a little force to close.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Colorado red paint finish is of a high standard and has an even coverage and a positive lustre. There are a handful of paint touch-ups and some mild imperfections on the top of the front valance.

A closer inspection of the finish shows tiny micro blistering under the paint, mainly on the top surfaces but only noticeable when close.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and seals are positive and no issues were noted on the lights and lenses.

The chrome is of a decent standard with no significant signs of age.

The body trim is decent, there appears to be a light seal of waxoyl close to the beading / embellishments.

Interior

Smartly and tastefully re-trimmed in leather, the Big Healey retains its period charm.

Seats and Carpets

The interior has been subject to a refurb as part of the restoration and the grey leather seats with red beading are finished to a high standard and free of any notable wear other than some age-related creasing.

The high-quality red carpets have lasted well, all bone dry too.

Dashboard

The dashboard is presented without any modifications.

The padding, trim and facia are clean.

The instrument bezels show minor signs of age, but all switches and controls look good.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is likely to be the original, and the boss shows age-related wear, but the wheel is free of damage.

The gear lever is in decent shape.

Mechanics

An upgraded engine and improved stopping power adds to the superb driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The cars starts up readily, and without any hesitation - the engine idles smoothly as the engine warning lights remain off. Aside from condensation, the exhaust remained smoke-free throughout the drive.

The cold engine did emit some light popping/backfire noises, maybe suggesting a carb tune-up. However, the noises disappeared during the drive and were not heard once the engine warmed up. We didn’t spot any fluid leaks on the day. The engine is cleanly presented with evidence of maintenance and it is fitted with an auxiliary fan.

The car had a full stainless steel exhaust system fitted in June 2024.

The gear change and clutch are good. There were no reported problems with their operation. It is fitted with a fully operational overdrive and the differential has an upgraded final drive.

Suspension and Brakes

The car sits correctly and absorbs the road without unwanted noises or thuds. It handles neatly, with no shaking on the move.

It's fitted with disc brakes on all four wheels and slows the car down confidently with no drama.

The Drive

The engine, which is believed to be an uprated 3-litre block provides ample and effortless performance. The driving position and the glorious noise of the twin SU’s feeding through the stainless steel exhaust amplifies a wonderful experience into a thrilling one.

The car pulls through the gears smoothly. We noticed how comfortable the ride is and the cabin remained relatively free of rattles, thanks to the high standard of its restoration. The steering is said to feel positive, with no knocks or grumbles. A small amount of play was noted but free of wobbles.

No clunks were heard when accelerating or braking and the oil pressure remained under 80 PSI during the test drive. The temperature gauge is not operational but the whole unit will be replaced shortly.

Electrics and Other

The heating system is operational but needs connecting.

The indicators have an audible buzzer when in use.

The soft top and frame are in excellent order, it raises and lowers without issues and provides a good snug fit. The cleanly presented side screens are also a positive fit. It also comes with a tonneau cover and a jacket for the side screens.

History and Paperwork

The car has had over ~£20,000 in spending and ~30 years worth of invoices.

Originally sold as a white LHD US market car in 1958, it appears to have spent much of its life in California until it was imported into the UK in 1991 to be stripped down, restored and converted into RHD. Restored by the Renaissance Classic Car Company in Staffordshire, much of this work has been documented in receipts and photos with additional mechanical and electrical parts sourced by AH Spares LTD. The owner's notes suggest it was treated to a bare metal respray and waxoyl'd as it was restored. Aldridge Trimmings carried out the tasteful interior refit.

After a three-year restoration, it was then registered in 1994 and appears to have had three owners since then, with the last but one owner keeping the car for ~25 years.

Further sundry and maintenance work was carried out over the years including the rebuilding of the steering box in 1997. An exchange differential unit, a gearbox rebuild and an engine rebuild with an unleaded head was completed in 1999.

More recent work includes a £3,500 engine spruce up and service in 2023 and new anti-roll bar drop link bushes and full stainless steel exhaust in June 2024.

It has several old MOT certificates to document the car's usage since it was restored and has only covered around 1000 miles over the last 20 years. Within a large box folder, there are handbooks, a user manual, an original period brochure, and several photographs of work carried out over the years on top of the 100 or so invoices which total a sum of over £20,000.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
