Introduction
Darren Rungasamy
The very definition of a muscular sports car with a magical soundtrack; the 'Big Healey' is one of the all-time greats.
The Austin Healey 100 series instantly struck a chord with buyers, particularly in the States, whose success dictated the car's evolution. In 1956, it was fitted with a more powerful engine and for the first time configured as a 2+2, to become the 100/6. Subtle design changes were also carried out but nothing was lost in the upgrade and was placed as the ultimate 100/6 model before the Healey became the 3000.
The 'Big Healey’s' have a positive reputation as a demanding drive, and its appeal as a beast to master is why it continues to resonate with classic car owners. Yet despite the raw power, it comes with modest running costs and a second-to-none parts availability and expertise.
Restored between 1991 and 1994, this 1958 Abingdon-built 2+2 BN4 Overdrive model was originally a California LHD car and converted into RHD. The restoration has been sensitively carried out by respected specialists, who have enhanced the characteristics of the Healey by fitting all-round disc brakes, a 3-litre engine with an unleaded head conversion and refurbishing the cabin without additional modern frivolities.
It comes with a box folder of invoices, outlining the restoration process, maintenance and upkeep since 1991. It has been owned by just three keepers since it was restored, one keeping the car for ~25 years. It was last serviced in June 2023 and its last MOT was issued in September 2023 with no advisories.

Hi Danny
to clarify…the V5c is totally unclear as it shows engine size as 3000cc (a 3 litre is actually 2912cc not 3000cc) but also contradicts this by quoting the 100/6 eng. no (26D)…which was 2639cc

Andrew
Hi Andrew,
I will respond to both of your messages within this one reply.
I am unsure what rattling you are referring to, however the vehicle has only covered circa 13,000 miles since a bottom-end rebuild and 5,000 miles since an unleaded converted head was fitted. With this in mind, any rattling you may hear during the cold start is likely due to the very little use the vehicle has had over the past year or so, and the carbs would likely now benefit from a tune-up.
Regarding the engine size, I don’t believe there is any documentation which references the engine size other than the V5C. The size stated may or may not have been a typo, but as there is no tag on the engine I am unable to verify either way. I would politely suggest you may be better looking at a different vehicle if the possible 273cc difference in engine size is a deciding factor for you.
Hi Danny
Thanks, sorry not to’ve replied sooner; have been away.
Understood re: plate but what proof or paperwork other than a ref. on the V5c(which is sometimes incorrect from typo’s or wrong input to DVLA) is there that this is a 3000 rather than the original 2639cc?
Also, in the “on the road” video there was a lot of rattling from start up all the time the car was stationary…what was that?
Regards
Andrew
Hi the V5c shows the engine number as starting 26C…this is a 2.6 100/6 engine, not a 3000. If you look at the block around half way up , just forward of the font carb heat shield there should be an ali plate with the engine no. on it. For example a 3000 mk1 would have a prefix of 29D…pleae confirm the no. Thanks Andrew
Hi Andrew,
Unfortunately the aluminum plate isn’t on the engine and it is registered as 3000cc (as per the V5c).
Hello do
You have any close up photos of the reported microblistering under the paint please, I cannot see in the photos.
Hi,
There are 200+ photographs of the exterior within this listing but unfortunately the microblisters are very difficult to photograph. I would strongly encourage any serious potential buyer to either inspect the vehicle for themselves or factor in that the vehicle does have microblisters which aren’t immediately visible from a distance but are noticeable upon closer inspection.
