Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Classic style and open top thrills, it’s pure 1960s driving joy - made for winding roads and sunny days.

The Austin-Healey 3000 MkII BJ7 is a quintessential example of British sports car excellence, blending refined design with exhilarating performance and undeniable character. As one of the most celebrated models in the “Big Healey” lineup, the BJ7 holds a special place in automotive history, not just for its good looks but for its contributions to spirited touring and motorsport heritage.

Introduced as a significant evolution of the original 3000, the BJ7 marked a turning point for the model, offering greater everyday usability while preserving the raw appeal that made earlier Healey's so popular. The car's rally success, including notable performances in events like the Liège–Rome–Liège and the Alpine Rally, cemented its status as a performance icon of its day.

Much of the restorative works were completed several years ago, although considering the mileage over its history, the 3000 hasn't covered large distances since the works were completed. For collectors and classic car enthusiasts, the BJ7 is especially desirable - not only as one of the last iterations before the MkIII but also as a well-rounded, usable classic. This example in particular, has to be seen and admired, and displaying very well, this Healey is not to be missed, it comes from ~45 years of family ownership.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Nicola the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The shape, style and design are just beautiful, I often find myself admiring its looks!

Nicola has been a long-time admirer of all things Healey, with fond memories of the model stretching back to her late Father's first ownership of the 3000. This particular example has been in the family for many years. Nicola lets us know more about the MkII, "In my opinion, it's a truly stunning car. It's been carefully maintained and has had a great deal of older restoration work completed on it."

The car comes to market for sale after the passing of Nicola's Father, "My dad had a lot of love for this car, it will be sorely missed but I want to make sure it goes to the right home". It's covered very few miles in her Father's care especially of later years, and has been used sparingly but always looked after to ensure it drives exactly as it should.

Due to the car coming to market as part of the estate sale, Nicola has decided it’s time for someone else to enjoy the car. She’s more than happy to answer any questions about it in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its long bonnet and iconic grille, the Austin-Healey 3000 BJ7 is classic British style with a sporty edge.

Wheels and Tyres

The 3000 is set on 15" silver multi-spoke wire wheels. These are in great condition with very few marks and overall look really smart. The style of the wheel compliments the 'racing style' of the car nicely. The spinners show a great finish which really stood out.

The wheels are fitted with a set of Michelin tyres all round. The condition of tyres looks great overall with no obvious cracking or concerning signs of wear. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this Austin-Healey and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

Looking over the car, we found no major dings or marks noted. Both doors and bonnet and boot open and close well without concern. The bodywork looked great and the car really stood out when admiring the shape on our visit.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a smart coat of black, the coverage is great across the car with no noted differences in colour. There were a couple of minor marks towards the front of the car, but nothing overly concerning to detract from the overall quality. The car was photographed in direct sunshine, as such, there were some slight holograms to the finish, largely due to unfavourable light.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen section and mirrors all appear in excellent condition and we could see no sign of chips on the main glass sections.

The hood to the MkII showed very well, having been replaced in 2006.

The seals, badges and light sections to the front and rear look excellent around the exterior and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Interior

Inside the 3000, it's all lovely vintage charm - leather seats, 3-spoke wheel, and pure driving focus.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished with red leather with the material looking smart across all the seats. Both front and rear seats in the car look to be in great condition with only minor sign of wear across the sections - overall, this was a very smartly presented interior.

Looking over the carpet sections, the mats showed to be in great condition, and looking underneath these, the main floor sections showed without concern. Checking over the boot, it displayed well.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

Clean and without fuss, the red dash appears in great shape with no major issues to report, just a couple of notes of the 3000's age. The top of the dash presents well although we did note a slight raise to the material closest to the windscreen, which is likely an easy area to remedy. Mileage counter showed with ~45,746 miles at the time of our visit.

We noted no issues with any warning lights and the Smiths branded fuel gauge, speedometer, rev counter, oil and water gauge were all functioning without concern.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A well presented 3-spoke steering wheel shows in good condition without major signs of wear.

The same can be said for the 4-speed gearstick which shows no visible signs of major wear or damage, and presents in good condition along with its gaiter rubber surround. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Under the bonnet, the 2.9L inline-six delivers smooth, torquey power with classic British charm - built for spirited drives.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting the car up from cold showed no issues and it drives without concern with its manual gearbox transferring the power to the rear wheels nicely.

The engine bay showed in great shape and reflected the quality of the rest of the car in the mechanical areas. The 3000 functions very well and goes through the gears without any issue. We heard no signs of slipping or any other issues with the clutch. We took the car on a short drive and go into further detail about the Austin-Healey, take a look at the mechanical review video to see the detail and the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out around some local roads, we heard no unwanted knocks, bangs or noise from the suspension, it provided an enjoyable journey. Looking underneath the car, the condition shows really well.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. Overall the car performed as expected with no observed issues. Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

The Austin-Healey delivers a thrilling drive whether navigating country roads or opening it up on a winding road, aided by its rear-wheel-drive layout and engaging four-speed gearbox.

The handling is nimble and predictable, with the disc brakes up front providing confident stopping power. It's a car that rewards spirited driving and still feels alive decades after it first hit the road.

Electrics and Other

As a 60s classic, the electrical setup is simple and straightforward. Nicola let us know that she had heard of no issues from her Father regarding the electrical elements on the car. To the best of her knowledge, everything was working as it should.

The car is complete with 2 tonneau covers and spare wheel in the boot.

History and Paperwork

With long family ownership, the low mileage Austin-Healey is well equipped for many more miles of driving pleasure ahead.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
