FOR SALE

1964 Austin-Healey 3000 (MKIII BJ8)

Now available for sale

Introduction

Matthew Nolan
Professional Consigner

The BJ8 is well known as the most powerful and luxurious Big Healey, engine improvements and a new interior layout made the 3000 MKIII a hit worldwide.

The Austin-Healey 3000 was built from 1959 until 1967 and nicknamed the "Big-Healey" as a result of the 3.0L engine it featured. The bodywork was shaped by Jensen Motors and assembled at BMC MG Works in Abingdon. The 3000 really stood out on the track, winning multiple classes in many Europen rallies and races. As was the trend at the time, from 1963, 91% of 3000's were exported worldwide with most ending up in North America.

This is a BJ8 sports convertible (Mark III) which was graced with a power jump from 136BHP to 150BHP. HD8 carburetors were fitted, a new high lift camshaft, power-assisted braking, and some design tweaks with a new fascia allowed the dials to be displayed directly in front of the driver.

A rare car being a genuine home market RHD, this Mk3 is coming out of 3 years ownership and recently fettled in preparation for sale. Somewhat of a unique creation, this car has been painted in a custom Jaguar based gunmetal grey, a welcome change from the old english white or signal red you often see them in.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matt after meeting Kerry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's a hell of a car, but I'm looking for a classic that's a bit more practical.

Kerry purchased the car in 2018 from a dealership in Surrey. The car had been freshly re-imported back to the UK after a spell in France. He was after a Mark III, as it's the most desirable out of the Big Healey range, the car offers 150BHP, thanks to the 3.0L engine with higher lift camshaft.

In Kerrys ownership, there's little he has had to do with the car having been bought in its finished condition. There's some tinkering he's done here and there, and more recently he had the car checked over and tuned, with it having seen little use over the pandemic. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Sports car styling with timeless curves, these cars are both instantly recognisable and iconic, and ideal for cutting through the air improving those lap times.

Wheels and Tyres

Factory fitted with 15" wire wheels and spinners, each one looks in great condition.

Continental tyres with sizing 165/80/15 wrap each wheel and show plenty of tread for the new owner to enjoy. View the photos and videos for a close up look.

Bodywork

The panel fit and condition are very good, with even and equal panel gaps throughout, apart from the driver's door which looks to require some adjustment.

Both doors open and close easily, the underside appears solid also, with jacking points in good condition too. Please take a look at the images and videos to see just how good this car is.

Paint

Finished in a gunmetal grey, Kerry reports the paintwork was carried out in ~2018, before his ownership.

The paint finish is very good throughout, with a deep shine and lustre being even across the car. The 3000 MK3 looks absolutely fabulous in this colour. Please take a look at the images and videos for a closer look at the paintwork.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the trim.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with only the slightest signs of age on the quarter lights.

Interior

A redesigned more luxurious interior with a driver-focused layout, still though, it's that archetypal open top sports experience.

Seats and Carpets

The black vinyl seats with pipping look in great original condition throughout, with minor signs of use in the forms of small cracks and light wear.

Small creases/marks are present in line with the age and mileage of the car. The carpets are in great condition throughout. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view.

Dashboard

The MKIII is graced with an upgraded dash, a luxurious walnut veneer with Smith dials. As you would expect, the dashboard shows some minimal signs of age, with a pleasing patina.

The dials, controls, and switches are in good condition and all are said to be functional.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

In line with the rest of the interior condition, the steering wheel and 4-speed gear stick are in great condition, showing little signs of wear in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Mechanics

The upgraded 3.0L in the Mk3 provides performance worthy of its sporting heritage, 150BHP worth.

Engine and Gearbox

The MKIII BJ8 was a step up from the predecessor with a power jump from 136BHP to 150BHP, thanks to the HD8 carbs, and a new high lift camshaft. The 3000 was appraised for its speed and handling, winning many rallies and races across Europe.

The cold start represented no issues for the engine. Please watch the mechanical video to hear the car starting. Kerry recently had the car with a specialist to fettle the carbs and points to smooth out a little rough running that had developed with a lack of use over the pandemic. As per the video, the car warmed up to temperature with ease and ticks along on idle.

This car is fitted with overdrive from factory, looking through the history is looks like some servicing work was completed on this in ~2007.

Suspension and Brakes

Power assisted brakes were introduced as standard in the BJ8.

Kerry reports the suspension and brakes work without any known issues. You'll see from the paperwork that suspension work was carried out by a previous owner in 2009. The braking system was overhauled in 2015 too looking at the paperwork.

The Drive

A sixties sports car, ready to go on many road trips. The Big Healeys provide a reliable unit with buckets of torque and plenty of space for future tuning. No wonder they were and still are extremely popular in racing.

Electrics and Other

The original radio is fitted along with the traditional flip light switches. Kerry reports all the electrics on this car are working as they should to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A genuine UK RHD Mk3, careful maintenance and restored sometime before 2018, this Big Healey stands out from the crowd with its stylish paintwork.

The car comes with some history in the 2000s in both Britain and France, the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate showing it to be an original home market right hand drive. The certificate states the car was factory fitted with the following equipment; wire wheels, adjustable steering column, laminated windscreen, overdrive, black tonneau cover.

Please take a look at all the history in the media pack.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi.
