Introduction
Glyn Parry
A nod to the iconic Bentley specials of the early '30s, this Bentley Mk VI Special offers endless driving pleasure while being surprisingly practical too.
The Bentley Mk VI was first introduced in 1946 and was produced up until '52, it was the first post-war luxury car from Bentley featuring all-steel coachwork, and was a great success for many years. The Mk VI was the basis for many specials over the years, it served as the perfect canvas to create an extremely capable sports tourer.
The car was rebuilt between '80 to '84 by Nicholas Stuthers and Ken Brittain as an 9'3 1/2" wheelbase 2+2 Sports Special. Tom has had the pleasure of owning and driving this car for the previous 13 years, adding his own practical touches to the car over his ownership while maintaining to a high standard. Tom has also thoroughly enjoyed the car, driving it through Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany and all across the UK to name a few.
Presented in an attractive British Racing Green over red colourway, it's a lovely specification with a vintage appeal.
This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Tom the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Hi Tom, I notice from the videos that some areas of the fabric covered areas could do with sorting out. How easy is it to source the fabric. On a similar note, does the fabric have to be doped to keep it waterproof?
Hi
Not sure where you’ve seen any damage…. In my opinion the body is nigh in perfect. The fabric is called Rexine and is readily available. The frame is covered with a sort of insulation then the Rexine stretched over it.
I use a high quality leather polish ; some use shoe polish. It doesn’t need any specialist treatment. Most WO Bentley bodies and many Derby cars are the same, it’s the archetypal bodywork.
Thanks Tom, the area I was talking about appeared to be on the underside of one of the doors. Certainly nothing major or to write home about and was more interested in the longer term upkeep. Thanks for the prompt reply.
Hi Tom,
Could you confirm that the damaged sump has now been properly repaired and the car is oil tight.
Many thanks
Hi
Yes . I believe it was a stone that kicked up as sump was pushed in very slightly. Sump is aluminium and due to age and oil contamination not weldable. It was carefully cleaned and treated with plastic metal left to cure overnight then re-treated. Car re-filled , driven about 20 miles so hot…… no leakage. Then left 24 hours …. No leakage! So it’s ok.
Tom
I should add the engine/gearbox /diff are some 70 years old and there are very minor drips when car mechanicals are hot! All old cars are slightly incontinent!!
As the car was rebuilt as a special during the 80,s does it need road tax.John Knowles, Bideford.
Hi John
No it’s registered as an historic car so no road tax ( or MOT) required.
Hi Tom,will this car run on the new fuel,or do you have to use high octane, thank you.
Good morning! I use ordinary unleaded fuel, but use an addictive from Castrol. A lot if Mk VI owners don’t use anything just ordinary fuel as engine low revving and not stressed, but for me it’s not worth any risk. I’m told one should stick to one sort of additive so have used same for years on the Bentley and others. Cheers Tom
Hi Tom,
The last service is shown as 2012. Is this correct?
Many thanks.
Phil
Hi Phil
Not sure how you understand that. I service the car regularly; oil / filter twice a year( end of “ season “ so October/November) Ans again in spring. All levels checked greased as necessary, etc. I drain radiator twice as it’s raced in season so no antifreeze from June to mid August, then refilled with green a/freeze. Box and diff oil changed every 3/4 years.
Any inspection of bills ( dread to think what I’ve spent but lots. Don’t tell my wife !
Cheers
Tom
Thanks Tom,
I was reading the section headed ‘service history’ but realise this is probably just the MOT record.
I rebuilt a 1936 4 1/4 litre sport some 40 years ago but kids and mortgage ruled so had to go!
Trying again now.
