Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The Bentley Eight is a graceful and majestic British masterpiece, a vehicle that perfectly embodies the marque.

The Bentley Eight, produced from 1984 to 1992, aimed to make Bentley ownership more accessible. This 6.7L V8 car, reaching around 120MPH from factory, featured cost-effective elements like steel wheels, straight forward dashboard displays, revised upholstery, walnut trim and simple carpets, however, of course it still retained a great level of high quality.

Despite the practical adaptations, it had Bentley's higher spec firmer suspension for excellent handling. The Eight targeted a broader audience, offering a taste of luxury for a slice of the price of some its bigger brothers.

Cosmetically, it had a chrome wire-mesh radiator grille instead of vertical slats. The Eight was ultimately Bentley's entry-level model, but gained popularity and further sales to Europe and the United States following successful UK trading. The distinction and interest in the Eight helped rekindle interest in Bentley as a standalone brand.

Coming to market after ~26 years ownership with fewer than ~100 miles travelled in the last 3 years, the Bentley has been looked after over its years. As the car is a slightly later model, it features electric heated seats.

This is ultimately a luxury cruiser but with power under the pedal delivering ~200BHP, its a car that would benefit from a little attention to the exterior but showcases a beautiful looking interior with a great degree of class.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Nick the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's such a great feeling, driving the Bentley, giving you a real sense of class and luxury - a true joy to drive.

As a real fan of British motoring, it was the sale of his last car that gave Nick the option to buy the Bentley, he said "my previous car was lovely but there's nothing like a true British classic, I love the journey out in the Eight, its such a stable drive and it just glides along the road. A great car to drive out and experience".

Nick is currently downsizing his collection of cars due to limited storage space at home and time constraints, he said, "If I had more space, I'd keep the car for special occasions, but I'm looking to free up some room. I don't have the time to drive it anymore, and it feels like a bit of a waste to own such a unique car and not use it".

Should any questions be needed, Nick is available to answer these in the 'Ask the Owner' section below.

Exterior

The Eight makes you feel privileged to drive it whilst leaving you with a smile on your face.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is equipped with the original 15" Bentley Eight wheels, the rims are generally in good condition, displaying some signs of wear consistent with its age. There are a few areas where the lacquer shows signs of bubbling on the finish, and we noticed some minor marks on the rear sections. However, no major concerns or problems were observed.

The car is furnished with a set of Avon Turbosteel 70 tyres, with a tread specification of 235/70 for both the front and rear. The condition of the tyres appears to be good, and the date codes indicate they are from 2015.

For a detailed view of the Bentley's exterior, including a closer inspection of the wheels and tyres, please refer to the photos and videos provided.

Bodywork

This Bentley Eight is a lovely original example. The car sits level, with well-aligned shut lines, and we observed no visible panel distortion. Both sets of doors, the boot, and the bonnet open and close smoothly, in line with the expected quality of this vehicle.

Regarding the exterior bodywork, we found no major concerns, although there were a couple of noted marks and a small ding on the rear bumper section, none of which raised significant concerns.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

On inspection, the Bentley Eight is undoubtedly a smart example with considerable future potential. However, a thorough examination revealed some age-related issues on the paint surface. We observed a few cracks in the paint finish, primarily around the front section of the car. Additionally, under certain lighting conditions, variations in presentation were noticeable across the side panels, which could indicate that the Bentley has undergone a repaint at some point in its history.

In summary, the Bentley would benefit from light restorative work to elevate its presentation to the standard expected of a high-end prestige vehicle - the reserve is set with this in mind.

We've taken high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves. The images are taken from various angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourselves. So please, take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass sections around the 'Eight' looked great, with the windscreen, windows, mirrors, and lenses all appearing in good condition, with no cracks, chips, or significant scratching that we observed during our visit.

Furthermore, the seals, badges, and light sections both at the front and rear of the car appeared to be in good condition, consistent with the overall presentation of the vehicle.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video. We take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself.

Interior

Almost like a step back in time, the interior of the Eight is a wonderful showpiece with luxury leathers and wooden trim.

Seats and Carpets

The smart white leather seats are in great condition, showing just some creases in the leather and wear on the outer edges. Upon inspection, the rear seating section appeared to be in great condition also.

Considering the light color of the material, the leather would benefit from a thorough cleaning, as there are some marks that have accumulated over the years. Overall, the interior is beautiful, and with a bit of care, it has the potential to be a real showstopper.

We also examined the boot section, which was well-maintained, clean, and tidy. A notable feature here was the cream piping that accentuated the carpeted boot interior. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

A beautiful walnut veneer dashboard with white leather is found on this lovely example. The elegance of the Bentley Eight interior features beautiful materials and a thoughtful design.

The black dash area appears to be in great shape with no major issues to report. The top of the dash presents well and without splits, cracking, or warping. The odometer displayed ~90,786 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls are beautifully presented; all faces look clean and clear, with no fogging or scratching. We noted no issues with any warning lights, and the gauges and dials were all functioning without concern.

Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the Bentley's dashboard. Head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An original 3 spoke Bentley steering wheel is found on this example. The black leather looks in great condition, in line with the rest of the car.

The selector for the automatic gearing is a stick on the steering column, which is also in great condition.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

The ~200BHP Bentley V8 will take you to your destination swiftly and in comfort.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting the car from a cold state showed no issues, and it runs smoothly with its 6.7L V8 engine purring nicely. The Bentley functions well and effortlessly handles its tasks.

We had the opportunity to take the car out on local roads alongside the current owner Nick to fully experience this vehicle. During the drive, we saw the car work through the automatic gearing without issue and gained insights from Nick's perspective on the car's performance.

Please take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold and for a closer look underneath the Bentley.

Suspension and Brakes

The 'Eight' implemented Bentley's higher spec firmer suspension for excellent handling, a nod to the newer type of buyer, who were generally tempted by a more sporty drive.

On the drive out, we heard no knocks, bangs, or squeaks from the suspension, and overall, the car performed as expected with no observed issues. The brakes felt solid, with no noticeable pull or vibrations during the journey, bringing the car to a stop smoothly and in line with Bentley's quality expectations.

We cover the underside of the 'Eight' in our 'Mechanical gallery' section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

Stylish and authentic, the Bentley is the kind of car that truly stands out in a crowd, thanks to its rich heritage and luxurious appeal. This charismatic cruiser is a genuine rarity on our roads today.

As an elegant and regal city car, the Bentley embodies simplicity and sophistication. After all, a Bentley is hand-crafted, not mass-produced, and the experience of driving one is unlike any other. In our assessment, the car performed as expected, without any observed issues.

Please watch the "On the Road" video to see the car in action during a short drive.

Electrics and Other

The electrics on the Bentley are relatively straight forward and don't add a lot of additional fuss for the driver. The car features a dash placed thermometer and clock along with an original radio system.

A great feature of the 'Eight' is the heated electric seats, part of the later model revision upgrades, although we were unable to test these out on our drive. Nick let us know that he's had no issues with the electrical elements on the car, and everything is working as it should.

There is a spare wheel located underneath the car to the rear secured by a metal bracket.

History and Paperwork

With fewer than ~100 miles travelled in the last 3 years, the Bentley is a car that has been cherished over its history being well maintained and looked after.

The Bentley comes to market after ~26 years ownership and is presented with a recent MOT valid until 16th July 2024. It also comes with plenty of paperwork for previous MOTs and services, even an invoice for some bodywork repairs carried out. We've detailed further in the paperwork gallery section the service history for the 'Eight', we've also included our HPI results certificate with VIN security checks and outstanding finance clearance.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle. Should any questions be required, Nick would be happy to answer these in the 'ask the owner' section.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
