Introduction

Andrew Taylor
Professional Consignor

For those of a certain age, there can surely be few more iconic BMW coupe shapes than the glorious 'shark nose' profile of the E24 635 CSi.

Whilst the E24 BMW debuted in 1976, the range-topping 635CSi didn’t arrive until 1978. The biggest version of the M30 straight-six offered considerable and worthwhile gains over the 3.2-litre version in the 633CSi, and endowed it with even better performance, improved economy and added refinement. The 3,453cc engine developed 218hp at 5200rpm and delivered 229lb ft of torque at 4000rpm. Externally the 635 CSi can be distinguished by a deeper spoiler under that distinctive shark-nose and a rubber boot spoiler.

At launch, Autocar summed it up very well by saying “The BMW will find favour with the man who ranks style as important as performance, and who prefers a vestige of sporting sound to total refinement; it is a worthy contender here, practical and very satisfying to drive.” It very much remains thus thirty years on.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Andrew after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I own and have owned a number of classic BMWs of all shapes and sizes - this one looks amazing and goes like the clappers too!

Chris is a true petrol-head and enjoys a fascinating collection of classics including some other beautiful BMWs. Chris knows his cars and is fastidious about bringing them back to standard. He found this car in the hands of an owner who had bought it out of many years of dry storage, but who had run out of funds and enthusiasm to recommission the car.

Chris stepped in to do what he had done many times before - to bring the car back to its original condition and save this much-loved classic from an uncertain future. Chris is now rationalising his collection and so is looking for an enthusiastic new owner for this '80s sports coupe icon.

Exterior

The professional respray in the original Sapphire Blue Metallic is not only beautifully done, but somehow further enhances the shark-like nature of this classic coupe.

Wheels and Tyres

This 635 CSi has undergone a substantial and well considered program of improvements whilst in its current ownership. This has included the fitment of a set of refurbished BMW BBS alloys shod in period correct, metric Michelin tyres in a 240/45R configuration. Given this, and as you can see from our photographs, both wheels and tyres are in excellent condition.

The owner is happy to supply the original wheels with the car if required.

Bodywork

The panel gaps looks good across the car; as you would expect from a 1980s BMW. However, we have to apologise as the exterior photos were taken with the near side passenger door on the latch - if you study the Exterior Review Video in the highest resolution then you can see that it's shut properly.

Part of the schedule of works undertaken includes a full body renovation, Chris believes that the front wings were replaced in the past by a previous owner. Consequently the car's bodywork appears almost factory-fresh and no areas of concern or imperfection were noted during our visit. View the Exterior Review video as mentioned above to see the detail.

Paint

The Sapphire Blue Metallic paintwork is in excellent condition, belying the fact that it has recently been fully resprayed by a professional paint shop used previously by the current owner. Despite the overcast day on which we photographed the car, the paintwork was lustrous and presented really well.

Glass and Trim

The glass all appears to be original with the expected BMW roundels and matching codes in place.

There were no signs of delamination, discolouration or fogging that we could see.

Interior

The deep blue leather of the signature sports seats offer just the right amount of appropriate wear, whilst remaining in really great and original condition.

Seats and Carpets

The blue on blue of the interior has a wonderful "1982 time-capsule" feel about it, and provides an object lesson in creating a sporting yet comfortable environment for driver and passengers.

The seats adjust as they should and remain supportive and comfortable in equal measure.

The blue wool carpets look to have been well protected by over mats, and hence, present in excellent condition. The dash dressings, door cards and headlining all appear to be in great, original condition too.

Dashboard

There's some great period touches to the dashboard. To start with you have the big, clear speedometer and tachometer that were a real signature feature of BMWs of the '80s. To the right of the instrument binnacle is the futuristic "test panel" warning light display. To the center console there is the multi-function keypad system.

Everything appears to work as it should and just adds to the time-capsule feeling of this 80's icon.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is the familiar three-spoke affair and is in fine fettle. The three-speed automatic gearbox is operated via a "T-bar" lever which is equally well presented.

Mechanics

Some great restoration work has been undertaken under the long bonnet of this 635 - a perfect excuse to show off the venerable straight six at every opportunity.

Engine and Gearbox

For a car of this age and mileage the engine bay of this car is really a treat. Considerable effort has been expended to make this a car that presents really well in every respect.

The Bosch M-Jetronic fuel injection system has been fully overhauled by the current owner and during our visit, the car started eagerly and ticked over smoothly and without any unwanted smoke.

The current owner is a serial classic BMW owner and enthusiast and has ensured us that all mechanical systems operate robustly and effectively.

Suspension and Brakes

As part of the recommissioning process the current owner has had the suspension and brakes checked and fully overhauled where required. As a result the running gear is reported to work very well as you would expect for such a well cared for car.

The Drive

Due to the current restrictions we were unable to travel in the car, but the current owner, who owns and has owned many classic BMW, remarks on how well this car drives. Chris says that the three speed automatic seems to make this car much more lively than a later four speed he owns.

This iconic car was designed to spirit its driver and passengers on high speed autobahn runs and through the twists and turns of challenging mountain roads in equal comfort and security. According to owner Chris, the years have not dimmed those abilities one bit.

Electrics and Other

For a car of this period there is a good level of electric assistance in the cabin of this sports coupe. That includes windows, sunroof and side mirrors. All these systems are reported to be working as expected.

History and Paperwork

Chris has owned the car for nearly two years and it comes with a number of recent invoices on hand as well as the current V5.

The current owner is in possession of a number of documents and invoices from the period in his ownership. Chris didn't inherit any history with the car but, as an experienced classic BMW owner, he has undertaken a significant program of improvement whilst the car has been in his ownership.

Chris will be happy to answer any of your questions about the 635 CSi in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
