Introduction
Alan Stuart
Born from Bavarian engineering, this iconic BMW embodies the perfect blend of power and sophistication.
Designed by Claus Luthe, noted for his design work for BMW, VW, and Audi, the E28 BMW 5-Series launched in 1981 as BMW's breakthrough executive saloon. Initially resembling its predecessor, the E12, the E28 range offered various engine options, from the entry-level 518 to the potent top of the line M535i.
The M story traces back to the M1, developed for competition, but the 5 Series marked BMW's first saloon adorned with the iconic 'M' badge. The M535i, the last of its kind, featured a ~220BHP M30 straight-six engine propelling it from 0–62MPH in ~7.2 seconds, delivering impressive performance for its time. Less than ~10,000 of the models were produced before production ceased in 1988, marking the end of an era for the E28 range and adding serious rarity to this model.
The M535i comes to the market with under ~1,000 miles covered in the past ~5 years, 2 sets of keys, and the original set of TRX wheels as part of the final sale. With its electric sunroof, electric windows, and beautifully cold air conditioning, this model is set up and ready for warmer months.
This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Charlotte the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Hi to AHK973,
It definitely was a cold start. I have kept the vehicle in a secure, dehumidified lock up unit. When my husband and I arrived that morning to meet with the photographer, Alan, for him to take the photos and film the videos, we waited until he arrived before pushing the vehicle on to the forecourt to ensure that we would be presenting a “cold start” video for the listing.
I think Alan was possibly looking at the wrong gauge or must have thought it was in shot. It’s clearly not working as it should be; perhaps it is wired the wrong way around since when continuing to watch the video when the vehicle is being driven on the road, the gauge is reading in the middle. As I’ve previously said… I inherited this car, and to the best of my knowledge there aren’t any issues, but this is something that of course has been picked up in the video thankfully, so you can see that.”
Best regards
On the cold start (if we can call it that) it does appear that the camera is deliberately not filming the temperature gauge as oddly the camera is pointing down on only the lower half of the dashboard and no logical explanation for this right? That said as the camera moves away I got a glimpse of the temp gauge which appeared to be in the red. So either it does not work or it was not a cold start. In the narrative it states that no issues seen with the electrics? So which is it? Faulty temp gauge or not a cold start?
Well spotted! My guess would be faulty gauge (which will be hard fix as gauges aren’t easy to come by and taking old brittle ones to repair is risky). It could be the sensor but I’ve never seen it do that throwing the gauge to the extreme red. Trade Classics assigner puts his hand on engine so looks like the above not warm start. But … I’ve previously bought a car through these guys and it was riddled with issues even though they claimed not mechanical, electrical issues. Question is why have both Trade Classics and the seller, failed to declare this? It’s not like you can’t see the gauge isn’t working, and as AHK973 rightly points out, why was the camera used at a misleading angle? This is deception!!
Hi where is the vehicle located? Is it possible to view please?
Thank you for your interest. Please contact Trade Classics direct regarding viewings. Many thanks.
Sure, will do. Is there any particular reason why you’re selling just 6 months after purchasing it?
Is the vehicle mechanically and electronically sound? Any known issues?
Are there any rust / corrosion related issues anywhere?
Has the vehicle ever been involved in a collision or is there any evidence of works to correct collision damage?
Thanks.
Yes. I inherited the car from my father who intended me to sell it once probate had concluded. So it was a transfer within the family.
No known issues. My father kept the car well maintained. In the history and paperwork section on the website, there are copies of all servicing, MOTs and other works completed to assist you.
Nothing more than I’m aware of over and above what has been listed
Not to my knowledge. My father acquired the vehicle in 1994 and he was never involved in a collision in the vehicle.
