Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The 635 CSi encapsulates everything a BMW should be. Comfortable and elegant with plenty of attitude.

Introduced in 1985, the E24 Series BMW 635 CSi represented the penultimate symbol of the BMW range. The sublime styling, gaining the name ‘shark nose’ due to its prominent forward-facing nose was a suitably apt name for a car connected with financial professionals. The car was created by Paul Bracq, who managed to combine elegant lines with serious presence. This is not to say that the car doesn’t have other attributes though, they were well regarded as effortless long-distance cruisers and as fitting for a sports coupe, the 635 CSi also had an active competition pedigree, winning three European Touring Car Championships in the process.

Perfect for the owner who ranks style as important as performance, the 635 CSi has still had to live under the shadow of the M6 version. However, as M6 prices reach unobtainable levels, the very best examples of late model 635 CSi's start becoming very appealing. This is where Johns beautifully presented car comes in. Offered with full-service history and a genuine mileage of 48,562 miles on the clock, this recently recommissioned example has just come out of long term climate-controlled storage. It is completely original, down from the dealer stickers to the Blaupunkt cassette stereo.

Good, well maintained and low mileage 635 CSi's can be enjoyed without burning significant holes in your wallets thanks to the commonality of parts with other BMW’s. But what really marks Johns car out as a viable alternative to most of the large coupes of the era, is that BMW created a comfortable well-built grand tourer which still looks like it means business.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren Rungasamy after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It wouldn't take too much work to get this car perfect.

John bought the car off the owner, who was a customer of his and set about recommissioning the car back to use. As a classic car fan, he saw the potential in the BMW and felt it didn't need too much work, thanks to its low mileage and sympathetic storage.

John was very honest with his analysis on the car and was keen to point out what he had spotted on the bodywork, hence the approach we have taken to fully document in writing and photos. John states that he feels the car could get to show winning quality, but storage space, with the usual equation of time being the main issue.

Exterior

Finished in Zinnober Red, the paint has truly resisted the ravages of time.

Wheels and Tyres

The alloys wheels are in great condition, and just show minor signs of loose paint with no signs of kerbing. They also come with the original locking wheel kit. There are three Avonspeed Tyres, with an earlier Michelin TRX tyre but all are in good condition with good wear and no sidewall cracking - be aware that they're likely to be over 10 years old.

Bodywork

The panel work and door shuts are what you would hope for, shut lines looking even and straight across the doors and boot/bonnet. The light doesn't show any ill-fitting panels. Both passenger door corners have very very minor corrosion developing on the bottom corners and a small blemish of rust can be seen at the top off the sill on the near-side where the chrome trim finisher is.

The sheen of the finish makes it difficult to spot but the sides also show very minor age-related dents along the flanks of the car. There is also a rust spot on the inner section of the off-side rear arch and one speck on the sunroof aperture. All these issues are very treatable as they are very small at this stage. In line with the condition of the bodywork, the underside of the car is very good. Take a look through the images and videos to see all the detail.

Paint

Finished in the striking "Zinnober" red, the paintwork is in very good order, there is evidence that it has seen a respray at some point but the quality of finish demonstrates an excellent lustre.

The side top edges of the front bumper have minor blemishes. The car has been subject to machine polish, the owner stated that the paint was good prior to this and had not been subject to any fade. There are also a handful of very minor chips and scratches on the front and rear of the car.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in generally good condition, although there is a small chip on the windscreen which is not within the driver's vision. The rest of the glass is free from major marks with no significant scratching, just the expected age-related wear. The condition of the exterior brightwork and trim is in very good condition and is all complete.

You'll often see E24's where either the chrome bumpers or rubber trim isn't sitting flush or straight, not with this lovely example as pictured.

Interior

BMW's quality of materials and finish has allowed the interior to retain its almost showroom condition.

Seats and Carpets

As expected in a car that has seen a cherished life, the interior is in very good condition with the smallest amount of wear evident. The leather seats have aged really well, with no unsightly damage. The carpets are in excellent condition - with small signs of wear. The headlining is unmarked, with all of the internal fittings such as seatbelts, door cards and plastic items withstanding their age well.

Dashboard

Typically for a car that has not seen much use in the last ten years, the dashboard is unmarked. There are no scratches, damage or major signs of wear. All of the functions work, including the sunroof and all four electric windows, as well as the dashboard computer diagnostic system. The Blaupunkt cassette stereo appears to be the original item, fully working and also comes with the same brand speakers.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has the smallest amount of wear, but this has to be expected for a car approaching 33 years old. The gear shift lever is fully functional and also shows virtually no wear.

Mechanics

The quality engineering of BMW's flagship car of the '80s surpasses many modern cars.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started after a couple of turns after the sub-zero overnight conditions, but once fired up the engine ran with no splutters or misfiring and soon got up to temperature with no signs of overheating. The exhaust condensation soon disappeared and there appears to be no blowing from the manifold. The gearbox is slick and shifts with no issues. The visual presentation of the engine is in an honest age-related condition. It could be easily detailed to suit the overall condition of the car - a perfect lockdown activity for the new buyer.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has seen attention to the braking components, but thanks to its sympathetic storage nothing major of note needed to be replaced. The car stops well, with no juddering or noise. The pads and discs appear to have plenty of life left. The suspension and dampers are in good working order.

The Drive

Driving dynamics have long been BMW's forte, with engineering and driver focus being reasons why BMW ascended to become one of the UK's most popular brands. However, the 635 CSi is indeed the real thing, designed and built during a period when BMW's really turned heads. With around 215 bhp on tap, the silky-smooth six-cylinder engine still sounds superb. BMW never sacrificed anything with their cars, as ergonomics, handling and performance still go hand in hand in this well-preserved example. While its third lane motorway adventures are long gone, it's always good to know that there's still a bit of shark left in the car.

Electrics and Other

All of the items tested are functional, with the exception of one of the front headlamp wipers and the bonnet struts which will need regassing or replacing. All door and glass rubber is in good condition, with external windscreen and back window seals showing minor signs of age. The doors close with a reassuring teutonic thunk.

History and Paperwork

The 635 CSI comes with full service history to back up its 48,562 miles, and condition to match careful ownership.

Registered new at BMW Dealer E & O Motors in Ruislip in January 1987, the car was sold six months later to its second owner in the Midlands, who appears to have used the car sparingly over the next three decades. Pleasingly the BMW comes with lots of evidence to back up the cars low mileage and has seen service stamps throughout the cars life while it has been on the road. It was laid up in storage for 7 years in 2013, in a temperature-controlled environment and carcoon. The logbook states it has had just two previous owners since new, which upon further investigation is actually down to one previous owner, as they ran a building company, and then transferred under his own name in 1993. The car was sold on to the current owner last year, who has brought the car up to scratch which included the renewal of brake items and the usual culprits of dry storage. The car also includes a new MOT and recent service.

Hi, nice car, apologies for the questions I have below. if you could kindly publically answer would be great. In the exterior video (0:42 to 0:48) it seems the passengers door doesn’t seem to close. This is in the interior video at 08:10 to 08:15 when the cameraman attempts to shut, it takes a couple of attempts. Any issues with the door latches? Also, under passenger side wing (at 01:36 of exterior video) there is something about an inch to the right of the chromework, is that bubbling? This is not present on the drivers side at (01:59 of exterior video). Also, in the service history table, the only “services” appear to have been in 2021 which you performed yourself, and in January 2011, noted in the service book as “BMW Independent Specialist” given these were performed by your own garage, can you please upload / provide the bill of works? Also, are there any invoices for works completed by Coalville (which has now permanently closed as a garage) or Chris Bream Cars? Is there any indication from the prior owners whom you purchased from recently, when the respray was done (any bills / invoices for the respray would be greatly appreciated)? Also, between 10 and 13 January 2006, the rear brake discs, rear fuel pipe, and exhaust must have been fixed in a bill in order for the MOT to have passed on 13 January 2006, is there any history to this? Also, between June 1996 and January 2001 are there any SORN certificates? Lastly, do you have any photographs of the car in the CarCoon? Sorry for the long list of questions, and many thanks, Dave

Thanks John, apologies in the earlier comment I meant January 2006 when I said “June 1996 and January 2001” I basically trying to see why there is such a big gap in the Service History table. Do you have further details on the “renewal of brake items”, e.g. brake pads, discs, or caliphers?
Given your garage has stamped the service booklet in 2011 and 2021, can you kindly summarise works completed?
Also, just like the Cherished Car Underwriting Agency photo was included under photo #21 of paperwork, why has the Julie Price (insurance agency in Hinckley) paperwork been omitted from the photos? Has other key paperwork been omitted? In terms of viewing I am around 2.5 hours drive, hence would prefer to iron these points out first before a 5 hour journey there and back journey.
Thanks,
