Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

With timeless boxy styling and legendary engineering, the E30 is the Swiss Army Knife of classic motoring.

Whether it's for track days, shows, or the daily commute; the E30 manages to do it all.

The second generation of the 3 series, known as the E30 launched in 1982 and remained in production until 1994. The model range included various body types, the most practical being the 4 door estate as presented here. This car is also fitted with the desirable and sought-after 2.5L M20 straight-six powertrain which offers the driver a mighty 171BHP to tap into. This car has received some tasteful modifications in the past including a limited-slip differential, short shift gear lever, lowering springs along with being chipped (Nick reports an extra ~30bhp).

In 1987, a major update came to the E30 range, external styling changes included redesigned rear lights, front bumper, and a reduction of chrome trim, along with extended rust protection. One feature that increased the interior cabin space was the suspension set-up: front MacPherson struts and a rear-trailing arm suspension was a compact arrangement that allowed for more cabin and boot space. Automotive press from around the world praised BMW for its handling capabilities.

This example has been owned by Nick for the last 7 years. Nick is a petrolhead and loves all thing motors, this is his third E30, he loves the classic shape and driving feel the car offers along with its practicality for transporting his children and luggage.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Nick the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

You can't beat the feel of an E30, and this touring version offers the most practicality and power with the 2.5L straight-six up front.

After 7 years of ownership, Nick has decided it's time to downsize his collection - he's used the car occasionally over the past year, driving it across to France and around the UK.

Nick loves how this car drives, having owned many BMWs throughout his time, the shape and feel of the E30 is his favourite. Over the past few years the car has seen little use, and so the E30 comes to auction with us.

Nick will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Boxy classic good looks with a lowered stance, the timeless lines turn heads wherever you travel.

Wheels and Tyres

The E30 is fitted with 15" BBS Lattice alloy wheels, all of which present in good condition with some very minor marks.

Nick has fitted softer compound Toyo Proxies T1Rs dated 2016, on each corner of the car for gripper tread and road holding. The tyres appear to have a good amount of tread on each tyre.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this E30 Touring with regards the panel gaps around the car, look to align well. We noticed some slight areas of dents and scrapes around each corner of the bumpers, with some light bubbling around the sunroof - on the whole the condition could be described as a great drivers example.

As seen in the paperwork images the original front splitter is included, as well as the larger modified example.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a Diamantschwarz Metallic (181), the paint appeared in fair condition on our visit, considering the age and use of the car, there is a fair amount of age-related marks across the bodywork. The car offered some deep reflections and good lustre to the paint.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks good and in line with the mileage and ownership, we didn't notice any major chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit.

The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

View the image gallery to see the detail.

Interior

Classic leather Recaro seats up front, ergonomic and comfortable for any lengthy journey.

Seats and Carpets

Nick has installed front black leather Recaro seats from a Cabriolet E30 and left the rear with the original cloth examples. All the seats provide a comfortable place to sit on long journeys and appear in good condition with no signs of major wear.

Dashboard

The instruments are easy to read and Nick assures us they all work as expected.

The dashboard top is showing some signs of age through use with one small crack.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with an original BMW three-spoke steering wheel, which makes manoeuvring the 325i a pleasure.

A BMW M-Sport gearstick is present and both the wheel and stick are in good condition, in line with age and mileage of this E30.

Mechanics

Naturally aspriated goodness - all the power comes from the 2.5L straight-six and feeds the rear-wheels for a rewarding drive.

Engine and Gearbox

Equipped with the legendary BMW straight six 2.5L, the car became hugely popular when it comes to motorsports, mainly due to the rear-wheel-drive/front-engine layout.

In 2010 the car received work from Fritz Bits, which included replacing the fuel lines, radiator, service, cambelt and tensioner, fuel tank, all brake lines, exhaust, upgrade chip, and complete underseal.

In 2014 the car received ~£5,000 worth of parts and labour including a new water pump, plugs, rotor arm, alternator belt, radiator top hose, service, camshaft, short shift gear lever, inlet valves, head gasket, cambelt, 3.73:1 LSD, braided brake line, all brake discs and EBC pads.

Please watch the "On the Road" video to see the car being started from cold, then run when up to temperature. On our short trip out, Nick operated the gears with ease.

Suspension and Brakes

In 2002 the car was fittest with front 51mm and rear Bilstein lowering springs.

Nick reports regular maintenance on this example has been carried out throughout his ownership.

The Drive

This is a car that’s ready to be enjoyed - we went on a gentle run in the car around the local area, check out the video to share in our experience on the road with Nick.

Electrics and Other

Most of the electrical fittings are said to be fully functional - Nick informs us that the rear left electric window doesn't work.

Please take a look at the images and videos for a detailed tour of this car's exterior and interior.

History and Paperwork

Ready to drive and enjoy, this practical classic with a desirable 2.5L straight-six will always be a favourite among the enthusiasts.

This car is coming out of 7 years of ownership with Nick. Take a look at the media to see all the history included in the sale of the car, including the extensive work carried out from 2010-2014. Major works includes; a new head gasket, cambelt, fuel lines, radiator, LSD, braided brake lines, all brake discs and pads, short shift gear lever and water pump. If you're in the market for a usable classic with mechanical enhancements to enjoy all year round, then this is the example for you.

Nick will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.
