Introduction

Alan Stuart
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Distinctive, luxurious, powerful and innovative – in the 90's this was BMW’s flagship offering, and it’s easy to understand why.

Launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989 the 8 Series was BMW’s flagship line. Available only as a 2 door pillarless coupe, the E31 came in both V12 and V8 form and was marketed as a luxuriously appointed grand tourer.

The distinctive exterior included pop up headlights and the shark like appearance set it apart from the contemporary BMW range. Powered by BMW’s M60, 4.0L V8 delivering ~282BHP to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic gearbox, the 840 Ci is capable of 0-60MPH in 7 seconds and a governed top speed of 155MPH.

This car is a 1995 model with only ~38,499 miles on the clock. It’s finished in a deep metallic red over an ivory interior. While this 8 Series could be brought up a level with some TLC from an enthusiast, it is ready to use and enjoy from the get go.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan meeting Pete the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love BMW's and particularly the original 8 series - you don't see many on the road anymore so it turns heads wherever you go.

Pete has always had a BMW, believing the model range and build quality to be second to none, he tells us “I love the smooth V8 power, it comfortable, the drive is fantastic and it's fast!".

He goes on to say “The car had only done ~25,000 miles when I got it and I’ve only done ~13,000 myself – I just don’t use it enough so, time for another owner to enjoy it”. Pete will be happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Sleek, rakish features and purposeful stance make the original 8 Series (E31) pillarless coupe instantly recognisable anywhere.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17-inch "Style 5 Basketweave" split rim alloy wheels are sound, however the inner edges and centre caps would benefit from refurbishment.

The wheels are wearing Pirelli tyres all round which appear to have good tread remaining. There is some peeling to the sidewall on one of the rear tyres although this appears limited to the surface.

Bodywork

The car looks straight and level with no obvious or significant issues with panel alignment. The doors, bonnet and boot all seem to shut with precision and shut lines look good. This is a BMW after all!

The sunroof mechanism would benefit from some attention, and there is some corrosion present on the sliding panel. It appears there is a small dent to the middle of the offside sill, and there is the odd parking ding on the panel work that has come with age. Do check out the photos and videos to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourself.

Paint

The "Calypso Red Metallic" is a stunning colour and generally there is a consistent and even finish across the car. It is fair to say there are several age-related marks, some scratches and a few patches of corrosion, particularly on the bonnet edges and sunroof.

Where the front panel has been resprayed, there is some inconsistency in the colour match, and some micro-blistering of the paint present too. Overall, the car presents well from afar, and we have done our best to capture the details in the photos and video.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows, mirrors and lenses all generally look good, and the badging and trim seem in good condition. There is a small area of delamination in the bottom corner of the rear screen, but this does not affect the visibility at all. As mentioned, the sunroof lid has some corrosion showing, and the new owner may need to fettle the mechanism too.

Interior

Beautiful ivory leather seats and clean interior reflects the incredibly low mileage of this luxury grand tourer.

Seats and Carpets

Ivory leather, electrically adjustable seats show very little wear reflecting the low mileage of this car. We could see no rips, tears or damage and rear seats appear hardly used at all. Just some age related cracking showing to the bolsters. The carpets look good too.

Take a look at the photos and interior video to appreciate the condition of this luxury cabin.

Dashboard

Typically, BMW! Dials are large and clear with no perspex broken or scratched as far as we could see.

All switches and gauges appear in good condition, the windows all operating as they should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Steering wheel has traditional BMW styling and looks in good condition as does the leather covered drive selector.

Mechanics

Smooth, effortless power delivery comes from the ~282BHP V8, driving the rear wheels through a slick 5 speed automatic gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

BMW’s well established, all aluminium M60 engine provides the power and can propel this substantial tourer to 60MPH in 7 seconds.

We were unable to carry out a cold start but, once started, the car idled steadily, there were no warning lights showing and exhaust emissions appeared clear. On our drive, the car went around the local area at various speeds, gear changes didn't bring up any issues, watch the video to see the detail.

Suspension and Brakes

The paperwork shows some refurbishment work has been carried out to the brake lines and this can also be seen in the underside photos. We did think we detected some suspension noise on the test drive, but this did not sound particularly severe.

The Drive

On the brief drive we took with Pete the car pulled very well, the engine was quiet, gear changes were slick and overall, the car felt comfortable, serene and capable. Everything you’d expect from a top of the range BMW.

Electrics and Other

Pete confirmed all electrics work as they should to his knowledge, including the pop-up headlights, although the air conditioning would benefit from a recharge. The car comes with its original cassette player, a trip computer and electrically adjustable seats.

History and Paperwork

Sometimes described as BMW’s first supercar – this is a chance to own a top of the range BMW offering luxury and performance in a uniquely styled package.

It’s 1995. Peirce Brosnan appears in Golden Eye, Take That are "Back for Good", and Frank Bruno wins the World Heavyweight Championship – The styling of some cars just seem to capture their moment and the original 8 series does it. Owning one of these shark nosed cruisers takes you back three decades in an instant.

This is a car to own and enjoy. It has an incredibly low mileage for the model and is ready to use and improve upon with time.

There is limited history, as the car has been through periods of storage, but included in the paperwork are past MOT certificates, bills for repair works and original owner’s manual and service books.

The private number plate will not be sold with the car and it will be issued with an age related registration

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Tried to bid — but it’s asking jump increments of £200?!

Hi, thanks for additional info — if for any reason it doesn’t sell via auction — more than happy to discuss/make an offer. I will keep my eye on bids. Regards, Dav

Hi, no problem. So ebay figure is wildly inaccurate?! Or is that the reserve? Your car does look like a great starting point to take to the ‘next level’ — but as you’ve recognised paintwork needs attention and sea air hasn’t been kind to the underside… so need to factor that in. Is there any reason why it’s had very little use? Was it always bought as an investment? In your video you’ve mentioned ‘suspension has been done’ What work has been done? Do all the electrics work as they should? Air con, has compressor failed or does it just need re-gassed? Regards, Dav

Hi, looks like a lovely example, hat off to you for maintaining to such a high standard. On ebay there is a figure of £13,250. Is that your reserve or the ‘buy it now’ figure? Regards, Dav
