Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Arguably far more technically advanced than any other car in the '90s - the gorgeously maturing 8 Series.

The 8 Series is truly an iconic car and it was much ahead of its time when it was launched in 1989 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The E31 is the first generation variant grand tourer based on the E24 6 series platform. To boost sales BMW realised a 200kg lighter much more affordable 8 series badged the 840Ci. This 2 door coupe is powered by the large and reliable V8 4.0L M60B40 engine coupled to a 5-speed automatic transmission with a power output of 286bhp.

This example comes to market from ~14 year ownership - Daniel has completely rebuilt the car with many additional optional extras and the sports body kit from the high spec'd 8 series. Presented in an attractive "Cosmosschwarz Metallic" over grey colourway, the car has been resprayed and given meticulous detail from Daniel offering extra appeal.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Daniel the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Daniel is a real petrol head with impressive 8-Series knowledge from his 14 years of ownership.

Daniel has owned this BMW 840Ci for the previous ~14 years, and over that time he has completely rebuilt the car from the ground up spending thousands of pounds and many hours to create the lovely 8-Series presented before you.

Daniel would love to keep the 8 Series as part of his collection, although due to a recent new car purchase and another 8 series project on the go, has decided to free up the garage space. Daniel will be on hand to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Long shark nose, suave pillar-less windows and subtly boxed arches, the 840Ci really looks the part with its tastefully colour-coded bodykit.

Wheels and Tyres

18" Style 66 BMW M-Sport wheels finished in silver from a later 5 Series look great on this example.

The wheels are fitted with Neuton NT 5000's tyres at the front dated 2009 and Michelin Pilot Sport 3's at the rear dated 2011 - these appear to be in good condition, with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age to the outside sidewalls that we could see.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this BMW looks in very good condition, with all the panel gaps around the car looking to visually align very well. During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dents on the car, everything looking sharp, and no signs of any serious corrosion were spotted.

During Daniel's ownership he has fitted the body kit from a doner 8 Series sport variant.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Resprayed in this iconic 'Cosmosschwarz Metallic' paintwork, the paint is finished to a lovely standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this 840Ci example looks good and in line with restoration, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The door handles, and window surrounds all look in good condition too.

Interior

Everything is wrapped in leather and pointed towards the driver for a luxurious yet performance focused appeal.

Seats and Carpets

The heated cream leather sport seats with dark grey detailing have held their shape very well over the years, Daniel has reported replacing the entire interior over his 14 years of ownership, for a more luxurious cabin space.

A similar story is told with the leather door cards and dark grey carpets.

Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard in this 840Ci shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs.

With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~111,757 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original BMW steering wheel presents in good condition in line with the mileage of this car, the leather automatic gearstick looks good too.

Take a look at the image gallery to see the detail of the interior.

Mechanics

A highly sought-after engine, the M60B40 V8 is considered bulletproof by many.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.0L M60B40 engine from BMW is a well regarded and reliable unit, more sought-after today than the later Vanos example. On the day of our visit we started the car from cold, and it performed well out on the road - the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Daniel reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth automatic five-speed gearbox powering the rear wheels.

Please take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the 840Ci, and the recently rebuilt engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears in good condition and provided a smooth journey on the sweeping Devonshire roads.

On our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a 8 Series grand tourer from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

A luxurious yet nippy cruise in the 840Ci, it will certainly put a smile on your face, fitted with a race exhaust which sounds great with the pillar-less windows rolled down during our drive, offering a near convertible feel. On the road with Daniel, the car felt tight, it had more than enough power to push it along the road and around those sweeping corners.

We didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Daniel reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car. Apart from the air conditioning - Daniel has provided a new compressor which will come with the car.

The On board computer has been replaced by Daniel and is fully working with no usual pixel problems.

History and Paperwork

The 8 Series is becoming rarer by the day, highly sought after and swiftly moving from 'modern' to 'proper' classic status.

The car is coming out of a ~14 year ownership with Daniel. The car has been bought back to life and completely restored by Daniel over those previous years, including a full respray in it's original Cosmosschwarz Metallic, gearbox service, front heated sport seats, rear blind, and third brake light. The car is also sold with its original head unit, amp, cd changer and cd changer cage.

The car comes with limited paperwork - take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, parts this 840Ci has received over its time with Daniel.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle - This car had a category D insurance loss recorded in April 2005.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi, I’m making progress on getting an inspection organised on Thursday. Regards, D.

Hi, great looking car. Understand the MB60B40 engine used Nikasil bore linings with the associated problem of premature cylinder bore wear resulting in loss of compression.
Is the engine the original fitment, or do you know whether it received a replacement short block, courtesy of BMW who addressed the problem, as they did on my previous E39.

Hi, many thanks for the info (it’s clearly been a labour of love!) — I’ve sent availability for inspection. Totally understand re. air con compressor… If i’m fortunate to ‘win’… was trying to avoid putting her straight into garage for air con repair! Weather is so toasty at the moment… air con is very necessary!

I hear you when you say it’s difficult to see her go. I actually remember tears welling up when my last one was loaded up for her onward journey to her new home!

One does get attached to ones toys! Like you, circumstances dictate when the come and go!

If it does come to me… I’ll get the air con work done and assure you it will have a good, enthusiast owned, home.

So is this what you do for a living — keep old german legends on the road or it a worthwhile hobby?

Regards, Dav

Hi, many thanks for the detailed explanation. I’ll investigate if an inspection is possible within timeframe of auction. It sounds as though you’re fairly handy as a mechanic 😉 and clearly knowledgable re. e31s. Description talks about rebuilding car from ground up… is that hyperbole — or an accurate description of your efforts? Do you have a list of all the big jobs you’ve done?

Re. Air con compressor — how big a job is that to swap out/re-gas?
Would you consider getting it done (at my cost) before uplift?

Can you send me your postcode — I can’t start online inspection form without it.

Thanks for clarifying re. aerial. I seen it on some cars and not others.

A couple of final things… it may just be a quirk of camera angle…the underside of one of sills looks a bit warped/damaged. Is that the case or just a bad acute angle?

Do windows dip correctly on entry.
Do wing mirrors dip on reverse (if mirrors came from another car)?

Lastly, if you were being picky — what is worst thing about the car? What would you do if you were keeping it?

I’ll get in touch with Trade Classics about possible inspection.

You mentioned you’ve another e31 — must be special car if you’re willing to let this one go?!

Kind Regards, Dav

One other query – what is the aerial near the boot?

Hi, I have tip my hat to you with regards your attention to detail… very impressive! A couple of queries… do you have any info on the extent of damage when car was written off? Did you do all the work to get it back on the road? Description says electrics weren’t tested — everything works? Windows, seats, heated seats, sunroof etc. Pop up light washer jets work? Both seat backs release and move forward as they should? Do you have any idea of cost to swap out air conditioning compressor / regas etc.? Two keys? Handbooks? Can you send me your postcode so i can get a transporter cost? Sorry for all the questions — I’m in sunny Glasgow – so no easy way to view. Would you be open to an independent inspection?
