Introduction

Kulraj Salh
COO

Pairing classic 90s BMW styling with thrilling performance, the M3 is a standout in the golden era of M cars.

The BMW M3 Evolution Convertible (E36) represents the perfect balance between high-performance engineering and open-air driving pleasure. As the final and most developed version of the E36 M3, this car showcases everything that made BMW’s M Division a standout in the '90s - sharp handling, responsive steering, a chassis that communicates with the driver at every turn and fully capable of delivering exhilarating performance. The Evolution model added on extra features compared to the standard M3 variant with Double Vanos valve timing technology, key upgrades such as light weight components, new engine management system, and a six-speed Getrag gearbox. The suspension was enhanced with stiffer springs, quicker steering, and improved Teves MkIV ABS. These upgrades, combined with a limited-slip differential and larger brakes, gave the M3 Evolution a step up in performance and handling.

This low mileage example comes to market from ~24 years previous ownership, just 1 former keeper registered, and has a current MOT valid until 7th October 2025. Having been dry-stored underground not covered for most of its life, the BMW presents in excellent condition inside and out, carries 2 sets of keys, a tracking system, which needs subscribing to, a complex alarm and Harman Kardon premium sound system. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, the M3 Evolution remains an iconic and highly desirable part of BMW’s performance car legacy with this one standing out as one of the best we've seen, complete with rare and original BMW parts in the boot :- toolkit, warning triangle and medical kit.

This listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Such an impressive car, it still feels very special even by today's more modern standards.

We've known Paul for many years now and we have been fortunate to help him find new owners for some very exceptional and rare cars. Paul worked for Jaguar Cars / Jaguar Land Rover as an Engineering Manager for over thirty years. His career took him through core Engineering Design to Special Vehicles and latterly Jaguar Heritage / Jaguar Classic where one of his achievements was the technical strategy and planning for the recent ‘E Type Reborn’ Programme.

He retired from JLR a few years ago in order to peruse his own passion within the classic car business; of course, specialising in Jaguars. So Heritage Classics Ltd was born and Paul now sources and works on Jaguars and other exotics every day. The E36 comes to market with us showing in stunning condition having been very well cared for over its years. Paul, bought the car from its previous keeper who owned the car for ~24 years, he told him "I've kept the car in top condition, and covered ". Should you have any questions about the car, Paul would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

From its subtly flared arches and deeper bumpers with M-division logos, the E36 offers a sleek look that turns heads - top up or down.

Wheels and Tyres

The M3 is set on 17" deep dish "Style 24M" alloy wheels. These are in great condition with no major marks to observe.

The front of the BMW is fitted with Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres, showing a spec of 225/45 with date codes from 2022. To the rear, the car is fitted with Goodyear Eagle F1's with a spec of 245/40 dated from 2020. The condition of tyres looks good overall with no obvious cracking or concerning signs of wear. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the M3 and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The E36’s distinctive body lines show well across the vehicle's exterior, with no signs of visible damage. All panel gaps also appear straight and true. Both doors, bonnet and boot open and close without concern. There was the faintest of scuffs to the nearside front bumper and nearside rear plastic trim, although we had to look closely to spot these. In addition, we noted a tiny pea-sized spot of corrosion to top of the offside rear wing where it meets the roof, the only visible sign of any corrosion on this dry stored car. These notes were minor observations which didn't detract from the overall presentation, we had to look very hard.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Titan Silver" paint, the coverage is lovely and even across the car with no noted imperfections. The finish was truly stunning looking over the paint on our visit and very well presented.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and mirrors all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of chips on the main glass sections. The convertible roof is in excellent condition, with no noted issues.

Seals and light sections to the front and rear look great around the exterior and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. The front bonnet badge had a slight note of wear to the finish, the rear badging showed in great condition.

Interior

Timeless styling with signature M details, supportive seats and a driver focused interior make the M3 a truly compelling modern classic.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished with black leather with the material looking in excellent condition across all the seats. A truly remarkable cabin.

Looking over the carpet sections, the mats showed to be in excellent condition too, and the carpets don't look faded and grey most likely due to the car living most of its life underground. Checking over the boot are all was in order and tidy, unstained in nature. We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The top of the dash presents in great condition, there were no signs of marks or wear, matching the door cards and the rest of the cabin area in this well cared for car. The mileage showed with ~42,784 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls all appear to be in excellent condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching. We noted no issues with any warning lights and the speedometer and rev counter were all functioning without concern when starting up the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A well presented BMW 3-spoke steering wheel shows in great condition without any notable signs of wear. The central BMW badge and M-Sport emblem are subtle touches to what you're in control of.

The same quality is matched on the 6-speed gearstick which shows no visible signs of major wear or damage, and presents in brilliant condition along with its gaiter surround. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

With its 3.2L straight-six S52 engine delivering ~321BHP from factory, the high-revving, rear wheel drive BMW is a true performance icon of the 90s.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bay showed in excellent condition, as noted in our review video. Starting up from cold, we noted no concerns and the BMW performed without issue when running and out on the road. The manual gearbox showed no concerns with shifting the M3 through to the gears.

We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. The car has seen a lack of use in recent years due to the former keepers deteriorating health, and so we think a service and tune-up would be good idea if the car is to be "used in anger" as the saying goes. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or issue from the suspension when we were on the road in the car, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, noted no concerns, again showing well here.

The brakes bring the car to a halt in a straight line with no juddering reported through the pedal, the stopping power and control felt great. Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

The real joy of the M3 Convertible lies in its versatility - from spirited weekend blasts to relaxed roof-down cruising, it offers the best of both worlds. We had a quick drive in the car with both the roof up and down, watch the video to see it in action.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in excellent condition. The M3 is complete with a toolkit, warning triangle, 2 keys, leather book pack and a glovebox mounted torch.

Also featured is the optional boot mounted CD changer, complete with its 6-disc cartridge, Harman Kardon premium sound system and an unused, full size spare wheel in the boot. Paul told us everything was in working order, as far as he was aware, even the air-conditioning blew nice and cold on the sunny Spring day.

History and Paperwork

In superb condition inside and out, this low mileage M3 has been cherished by the same owner for ~24 years, is in original specification with just 1 former keeper registered.

Coming to market as a trade sale with the previous owner keeping the car for ~24 years, it has been in storage with little use over more recent times noted in the MOT and servicing history. We cover the full history on the BMW in our paperwork gallery showing additional details about the servicing works. The 5-digit private plate (S1BJS) is the original plate the car was registered with, and is included in the sale.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
