Hand-built with just ~2,595 RHD examples created, the BMW S62 V8 engine could pump out almost 400bhp and get you to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. Yet, it is a refined, comfortable; a practical family car with a relaxed nature. Find an open road, and you’ll soon appreciate the handling balance and seamless power delivery. You don’t need to look far to read about the E39’s status as one of the best saloon cars ever built, and in M5 form it simply takes it to another level.

With subsequent M5s becoming far more complicated than necessary, the E39 established a perfect balance between old-school and modern, characterised by its understated yet handsome design, it is a car that represents the very best of a bygone era.

With just two previous registered owners under its belt, this beautifully presented Le Man Blue 2000 M5 also comes with a substantial history. Fully kitted out, including a black leather interior, this car has a handful of reversible interior upgrades and comes with a recent service, two keys and an MOT to November 2024.

Noman has owned the car since 2017 and due to his expertise in the motor trade, has ensured that the car has been meticulously maintained, which includes regular servicing as well as attention to any issues that may have arisen for his peace of mind.

This is Norman's own car and he's made the difficult decision to sell, in order to free up funds.

Exterior

The M5 is subtly styled but gets the nod of approval from those in the know.

Wheels and Tyres

The 18” Chrome Shadow alloy wheels are very nicely presented with only a very minor scuff noted on the nearside rear alloy.

The tyres are mixed brands; Continental and Toledo at the front, but the rear items are matching pair of Accelera - all have good tread and no visible outside wall damage.

Bodywork

The bodywork is in very good condition - we only noticed bubble imperfections on the nearside lower rear sill close to the jacking point. There is also a small patch of corrosion on the top of the off-side front sill.

The body has a cohesive panel fit, with even panel gaps and all doors open and close with ease. The panels are free of dents, with just a minor blemish emerging under the paint on the nearside rear arch. The bumpers are well-mounted.

Paint

The paint has a decent lustre, with a healthy shine and even colour match. There are a few minor imperfections noted on the top of the nearside doors but otherwise, it presents very well.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in good shape, with no notable damage other than a chip repair on the lower section of the windscreen but not in the driver's vision and not flagged up as an advisory. The seals are in good order, with minimal signs of age. Both front headlamp lenses have aged somewhat but otherwise, all of the lenses are good.

The trim is well mounted with nothing more than the odd minor scuff noted on the rear bumper trim. The fuel cap has a minor dent and will need adjustment to stay open and the passenger side door mirror has a discoloured lens.

Interior

With M badging and stitching around the cabin, you know you're in something special.

Seats and Carpets

The M5 embellished black leather seats are in decent shape, with mild creasing noted on the driver's bolster and minor marks on the others, but all are free of significant damage.

The carpets and mats are in good condition, all including the boot item are damp-free.

Dashboard

The cabin presentation is positive with no notable blemishes or damage on the dashboard. The trim is in good condition, with just a panel under the glovebox that needs adjusting. There is a little wear noted on some of the leather and veneer elements of the centre console.

The switchgear and controls are all neatly presented and Norman confirms they all work - there are some dead pixels on the digital binnacle readout; a common issue that can be fixed.

The headlining is good, with the door cards generally in good shape too, with just minor marks in places.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel with M coloured stitching around the inner rim is an upgraded item, but the original will be supplied with the car. The gear-knob too is an aftermarket item but both of the retro-fitted items are in good shape.

Mechanics

Can there be a finer punch than the S62 V8 engine.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up with no hesitation, strains, rattles or unwanted noises heard as the it warms up. The engine idled smoothly and evenly, with the expected cold start condensation soon clearing up. The dashboard warning lights remained off as the engine ran. The engine itself is very cleanly presented, with nicely presented hoses and ancillaries, all suggesting that the car has been carefully looked after and appeared to be leak-free on the day.

The six-speed manual transmission selects gears with no issues, the clutch has a good biting point too.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension felt taut, with no unwanted noises at lower speeds, with no negative feedback felt or heard over the speed humps.

The car brakes evenly with confidence and no notable issues were felt around town, with no squeals, grinds or vibrations from the wheels.

The Drive

The V8 burble is only a part of the rewards offered by the E39 M5, it also offers perfect manners when needed too. Around town it's an easy car to manage but on the day of our visit, its full potential on the open road was regretfully not unleashed. Nevertheless, the car fulfilled its tasks without issue.

It rides smoothly and confidently, without any drama with Noman reporting no issues in terms of the oil pressure or engine temperature. The car brakes without steering vibrations or knocking - for a 24 year old car, it feels reassuringly modern to drive. There was no observations of unwanted transmission noises.

Electrics and Other

The car has been kept largely original, with a handful of reversible items in the cabin added by the current owner, which includes the upgraded steering wheel, gear knob and padded seat belt harnesses. It retains its cassette player and boot mounted CD-changer system.

We didn't test all the electrics but Noman told us everything was in working order.

History and Paperwork

The M5 has an enthusiastic following and this car has an extensive coverage of maintenance, servicing and upkeep in its history file.

First registered on the 1st of January 2000, this UK car was handled by BMW's main dealer Chandlers Garage in Brighton, with service stamps by the dealer up to 64,370 miles, with specialists and independents thereafter.

It comes with a comprehensive folder of receipts since the car was new. Some of these historic bills include maintenance to the steering, suspension, brakes and engine sensors. There is an invoice for a professional respray in 2012.

Work has also been carried out on the Vanos by the current owner. The car's most recent service was at the end of October 2023 and has an MOT until November 2024. It comes with its full owner's wallet and two keys.
