The Z3 M Roadster has all the makings of an enduring classic - from evocative, muscular looks through to stunning performance.

Emerging from BMW’s brand new, South Carolina, factory in 1997 the Z3 series was well received by the buying public and enjoyed a 5-year production run. The recipe was simple – Bavarian engineering quality combined with light weight, stunning looks, and agile handling. Having proved the concept BMW quickly introduced the crowning glory of the Z3 range – The M Z3 “M” Series. With more aggressive styling, improved cabin ergonomics and a dramatic boost in performance the Z3 M represented a real step change. Offering 316 BHP from its 3.2 Litre, straight six the car could deliver 0-60 in under 5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Grip was enhanced through a wider track, brakes were upgraded, and the Z3 M offered a limited slip differential.

This Z3 M is an exceptional example. Coming to auction from ~5 years ownership this beautiful car is finished in stunning Estoril Blue Metallic over an Estoril Nappa leather interior. In great condition all round the car comes with extensive service history and maintenance receipts going back to when it was new. Complete with an original hardtop this is a car that has clearly been cherished, well maintained and enjoyed by current and previous owners.

Meet the owner

The Z3 M was at the top of my “must own” list – it looks amazing, sounds great and the drive is fantastic.

Alan loves cars that mean business, the Z3 M having shared garage space with his Cobra - he tells us, “There’s something about the Z3 M that sets it apart. It has that wonderful, muscular stance, amazing lines and, in my view, this one has the perfect colour scheme - I absolutely love it”. His friend Kevin has been tasked with managing the sale of the car.

Alan goes on to say, “It drives like an absolute dream, it holds the road, corners perfectly and has plenty of power when you need it, and I’m only letting it go for medical reasons so I will miss it – It’s a lovely example and I really hope it goes to someone who can enjoy it as much as I have”. Exterior

Elegant looks, sculpted lines and muscular stance combine perfectly – undeniably fit for purpose.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17 inch, 5 spoke, alloy wheels, “M” branded centre caps and chrome finished wheel nuts look in great condition with only very minor wear on the rims. The wheels are shod with 225/45 R17 tyres on the front and 245/40 R17 on the rear all of which appear to have good tread remaining.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, panel gaps look good, and we could see no signs of damage or panel distortion. Bonnet, boot and both doors open and close cleanly and precisely, exactly what you would expect from BMW engineering.

The dark blue soft top fits well and opens and closes exactly as it should, as you can see in the External Review video.

Also included is a factory hard top, which we understand was purchased new with the car. This also appears in excellent condition and is complete with a protective storage bag.

Paint

The Estoril Blue Metallic paint on this roadster is stunning. The finish is even and consistent and shines beautifully. There are one or two stone chips as would be expected, but we really did have to search to find them. The condition of this car belies its 23 years.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows and soft top rear screen present well, and we could see no sign of significant scratches, chips or marks. Lights, mirrors, and lenses all look in great shape too.

Interior

A proper sports car interior finished in stylish Estoril Nappa Leather – this cabin is low, beautifully uncluttered and offers fantastic visibility.

Seats and Carpets

The Estoril Nappa Leather seats present beautifully and appear in really good condition as do the door cards and interior trim. The only wear we could see was on the driver's seat bolster, as would be expected.

The carpets and floor mats all appear in great shape and overall, the blending of black and Estoril Blue leather give a luxurious feel to this cabin

Dashboard

The dashboard presents well with the chrome rimmed dials appearing clear and unmarked. The trim is clean and unmarked with no splits or tears that we could see. Like the exterior of this car the interior has been impeccably maintained and looks fantastic as a result.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather covered, “M” branded, steering wheel appears in excellent condition with no damage or significant marks. Likewise, the similarly branded gear selection lever, leather gaiter and chrome surround look great.

Mechanics

Legendary M-Technik, naturally aspirated, straight six transfers 316BHP to the rear wheels through a slick 5-speed gearbox

Engine and Gearbox

With a top speed of 155mph and smooth, effortless acceleration this car offers serious performance.

The M Technic in-line six looks stunning in the clean, well looked after engine bay. On our cold start the car fired up easily and immediately settled down to a steady idle.

We could see no warning lights on the dash and emissions appeared visually clear.

Suspension and Brakes

The limited slip differential, wider track, beefier tyres, and bigger brakes offered on the “M” models made their handling legendary. This is BMW engineering, you can be assured this car grips, turns and stops just as well as it goes

The Drive

We were only able to take a short drive with Kevin, however the car pulled well, was firm and planted and pulled up straight and evenly. The M feels like a traditional, analogue sports car and is all the more special for it.

Electrics and Other

All switchgear, dials and gauges appear in great condition, and we were assured everything works exactly as it should. The car is equipped with cruise control, alarm system, electrically operated windows and hood and Radio/CD with autochanger in the boot.

We were advised that while the air conditioning works properly it would benefit from a regas.

An iconic roadster with serious muscle – this is a chance to own a magnificent example of one of BMW’s most enjoyable modern classics.

From the muscular sculpted lines through to the blistering acceleration the Z3 M Series feels like a proper sports car.

And this M is a special example, offering a stunning colourway, in superb condition inside and out as well as extensive service and maintenance history. With MOT certificates and invoices going back to when the car was new, original service manual and handbooks, two keys and a factory hardtop - we think it must be one of the best around right now.
