Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

With just 247 E46 Alpina B3 S made, this is number 237, and the last one to be registered in the UK.

Looking like a bit more of a sleeper over the M3, with the Alpina you get similar performance but much more refinement, this making the B3 S an excellent all rounder. Using the engine from the B3 3.3, Alpina increased the bore from 86.4mm to 87mm, bringing the displacement to 3346 cc. A newly reworked intake and a new exhaust manifold was developed to allow the new 3.4L to breathe more freely. A new engine management system was the icing on the cake for the new and improved engine.

The suspension and brakes remained the same as the B3 3.3, and there was the addition of the 5-speed "Switch-Tronic" gearbox which this particular model we have here has.

This 2005 Alpina B3S is stunning. Just two former keepers, low mileage at ~40,000 covered, and coming to market from 4 years ownership. Presented with all the right bits in terms of full Alpina decals, colour matched calipers and overmats etc, this is definitely one for a true enthusiast to cherish for years to come.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Brian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Being an avid BMW fan for many years, I knew the owner of this Alpina from shows - always joking saying I would buy it... one day he said I could!

Brian is the third owner of this low mileage 2005 BMW Alpina B3 S E46. He purchased the car in 2017 from a friend in the BMW car club, who had owned the car since 2008. Clearly, it’s been an enthusiast owned car which has been pampered to within an inch of its life by all its owners.

The condition of the car is stunning, with an extensive history and solid stamped service book, the Alpina has wanted for nothing in its life. It has been an extremely difficult decision for Brian to part with the BMW, and one that has been thought about for a couple of years. Brian will be more than happy to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

Exterior

At first glance you think E46 - but then when you start to look, the subtle Alpina flourishes pop out at you, and you realise this is a special car.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original Alpina wheels, these are in excellent condition throughout including the centre caps.

The tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport and are in very good condition with plenty of miles remaining for the new lucky keeper. Please see more images of the wheels in the exterior gallery.

Bodywork

The BMW is in excellent order with all the panel gaps looking to be in just the same condition as they were when they left the factory in 2005.

The only blemish we saw on the car is a small dent just above the bumper on the passenger side wing, it was only spotted after looking around the car for the second time, so you'll have to look closely to spot it.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at this beautiful BMW Alpina B3 S.

Paint

Waxed to within an inch of its life, it’s clear to see that the Alpina has been lavished over the years to leave a deep lustrous shine on the Alpina Blue-Metallic II paintwork.

There may be an odd few, small stone chips, but it has to be said that these really are few and far between. Looking around the car is very pleasing, with no real noticeable swirl marks to mention.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections showing off the wonderful lines of the Alpina at its best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks to be in brilliant condition, with no obvious scratches to mention, and the window trims again are excellent. Lighting the way, the headlights are in good order with no noticeable scratches to the lenses, and the same can be said for the rear lenses.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Interior

Grey Nappa leather of the finest quality was the order of the day when Alpina put their mark on this lovely E46.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in beautiful grey Nappa leather, the seats are in excellent order. The electric driver’s seat has seen ~40,047 miles accumulated, but is in excellent condition, along with the passenger seat, and the rear seat looks to have only been sat in a handful of times.

As you would expect, the carpets are excellent showing no signs of wear and tear. There is a set of mats fitted to further protect them. The superb condition of this German classic continues inside the boot.

Dashboard

Finished in a black upper and lower matching leather to the seats, the E46 has an unmarked dashboard. A wooden effect fascia houses the instruments and a small Alpina badge on the left.

The instruments are working as they should with no warning lights displayed when the engine is running, presented in the familiar blue backed dial layout from Alpina. The odometer shows a reading of ~40,047 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

It’s the small things that make a difference, and Brian has gone to the trouble of having the steering wheel recovered, as the old leather was a little too shiny for him, and of course ensuring the Alpina blue and green colours for the stitching. With that done, the steering wheel is in excellent condition.

The gear knob is as to be expected, in grey leather, and this shows no signs of wear. Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images of the interior.

Mechanics

Alpina knew exactly what was in store for the 3.0 litre when it was pulled from the production line - an upgrade to a 3.4L, that’ll do nicely.

Engine and Gearbox

As you know the E46 is no slouch in standard form, but when Alpina pulls the cars from the production line the engine for the E3 S gets upgraded to a 3.4 litre, producing 305BHP and 267 Lb-ft of torque.

With only ~40,047 miles, the car has been meticulously maintained throughout its life. It starts up wonderfully, with no untoward noises coming from the extremely clean and detailed engine bay. The gearbox in the car is the silky smooth, 5-speed Switch-Tronic. With the touch of a button to the back of the steering wheel, the car effortlessly changes up or down the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

Looking at the suspension from under the car, there doesn't appear to be any leaks which we could see, and riding in the car is nice and smooth, with no noises from either corner.

The brakes are working as they should bringing the car to a halt in a straight line. The rear has had the pads replaced approximately ~200 miles ago.

The Drive

Brian admits himself that this is a driver’s car which he has never even come close to driving like it could be driven. Instead he has enjoyed the smoothness and effortless drive the Alpina gives even at low speeds, a gentleman's express.

The car pulls smoothly through the gears and the ride feels firm and stable, and there are no noises to mention other than the orchestral sound of the 3.4 litre straight-six.

Electrics and Other

We need to mention here that the Alpina is reported to have been ordered when new with every option bar two, and these have since been added by Brian to finish off the perfect spec of the B3 S.

A full Harman/Kardon stereo system is in place for your in-car entertainment, which includes satellite navigation, which was last updated in 2015. All the switchgear is reported to be working as it should. The tool kit is present and correct, and also included is a battery conditioner to simply plug into a wall socket ensuring the BMW is always ready to go.

Please see the high quality images for the interior of the Alpina.

History and Paperwork

The Alpina boasts an excellent history which has spanned through 3 fanatical BMW owners who have taken great care of number 237.

Organised and meticulous is a way to describe the paperwork for the Alpina. All the hand books are present, along with the service book which has a healthy number of stamps, and a nice selection of invoices for work carried out. There are also two sets of keys, plus the valet key.

The MOT is valid until the 10th June 2022. Incidentally, this is also a car which has never received an advisory on any MOT.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Your records show an £100-00 excess paid for an insurance claim repair on 04/03/2014 at mileage 36,215 on this car. What damage was done to the car and what was the total amount paid for the repair? Thank you.

Hi Brian
Could you confirm what servicing it’s had since 2015 please.
The advert would suggest it hasn’t had any.
Thanks
