Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

A roadster that blends classic British charm with razor-sharp performance and an unmatched driver connection.

After Lotus ceased production of the Lotus Seven, Caterham acquired the rights to the design and now produces both kit and fully assembled cars. The modern Caterham Seven, while inspired by the Series 3 Lotus Seven, has evolved so much that no parts remain identical to the original Lotus. The Caterham 7 is a super-lightweight sports car, tipping the scales at just ~545 kg. Based on the Lotus 7, which was available as a kit or factory-built model from 1957 to 1972, Caterham continues to offer the Seven in both kit and fully assembled forms.

Over the years, various versions of the Seven have been released. In 1982, Caterham introduced the Roadsport, built with special trim, weight-reducing components, and the Caterham five-speed gearbox. The Roadsport, aimed at the road market, with its 1.6L engine, delivers ~115 BHP, a top speed of ~121 MPH and a 0-60 time in just ~5.1 seconds.

This car is a factory built example, with low ownership, low mileage and presented in the stunning anniversary colour-way of "Caterham Green" with "Firecracker Yellow" stripe. It comes to market from ~5 years ownership with our vendor, and has a current MOT valid until 06.05.2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As my second Caterham, I just can't get enough of the driving feel.

David, the current owner, has been a fan of Caterham and kit cars for as long as he can remember, "I love the sporty design and low stance of these cars, there's something so different about the way they handle and drive. Serious fun in such a small car!". The Roadsport is one of those cars that needs to be driven to truly understand the full Caterham experience, David tells us "The noise the exhaust makes both accelerating and the pops on deceleration is something that I just cant get tired of".

With less time to spend on the car, and less opportunities to take the car out on the road, David lets us know "It’s time to move it on. I’m busy at work and I’m not using it as I should. I would like the car to be enjoyed by someone who has the opportunity to take it out and make the most of the car on the road". He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Presented in beautiful Caterham Green with Firecracker Yellow bonnet stripe and nose band, this colour-way creates a Seven that looks as good as it goes.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 14" 8 spoke alloys finished in silver, the wheels show in great condition, with no signs of any concerning damage during our visit.

The Roadsport is fitted with Avon ZV3 front tyres to the front dated from 2012. To the rear, Goodyear Vector '4 seasons' were fitted dating from 2018. The tyres are 185/60 and appeared to be in good visual condition, with no initial concerns on the tread remaining.

Bodywork

Making the bodywork as light as possible was the primary focus for the Seven's design, a lightweight steel space-frame along with aluminium panels achieved this.

While looking over the Caterham during our visit, we found that the car maintains good visual panel gaps. We did not observe any major scratches or obvious signs of corrosion, but we did spot a very minor dent on the panel under the fuel filler cap.

Our high-resolution images and videos provide a detailed look at these observations, so please take the time to review all the media files to assess the car's condition for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the classic "Anniversary" colour scheme, the Caterham green paintwork with lovely "Firecracker Yellow" bonnet stripe, has a smooth and even finish across all the panels. To take the Roadsport up to the next level, a good level of detailing would really make the car shine.

We did note a slight mark on the drivers side bonnet area and on the rear drivers side arch, the paint showed a few signs of cracking. We also found some paint cracking where the bonnet lid catches the base closing edge, a fairly common thing on these cars.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass sections on the Seven were in great condition, consistent with the car's age; we didn't notice any cracks or discolouration during our visit. The trim and window seals also looked excellent.

The rear load area of the Caterham showed in good condition with no concerns noted. The front and rear lights all were well presented. Soft top hood section on the Roadsport showed with no problems. Optional side windows, door tops and mirrors show in great condition.

Check out the exterior gallery and review video. We guide you through all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself, so you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

The stripped-down, minimalist interior is all about the essentials only.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in great condition with no rips, tears or concerning damage. The colour had faded slightly towards the top of the seats, likely caused by the sun. The double strap sports seatbelts were great, holding both driver and passenger securely in place out on the road.

The main flooring in the interior is in a good condition but would benefit from a little cleaning, it does feature lowered floors, giving more space for a taller driver. We cover the cabin area of the Roadsport in more detail in our interior review video.

Dashboard

The black dash looks to be in great condition, free from any significant marks. The dashboard presented really well, with no visible cracking or warping when we visited the car and showed ~7,000 miles on the clock when starting it up. All the numbers and dials on the dash appeared clear and legible.

The gauges, switches, and controls all appeared to be in great condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching. Our interior gallery section offers a closer look at the Roadsport dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black Caterham steering wheel is in excellent condition, with no signs of major damage or wear. The gearstick is also in similar condition, showing only minor signs of use.

Additional images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, are available in our "Interior Gallery" section for more details on what the Caterham has to offer.

Mechanics

The Caterham's engine delivers ~115BHP, and a top speed of ~121MPH - an electrifying blend of speed and agility.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine appears to be in great visual condition, with no issues, smoke, or unusual noises. We noted idle was a bit rough when the engine was cold, but any concerns was shortly cleared after the engine had warmed up.

Gear changes were slick and showed no issues with performance whilst driving along the roads. Take a look at our "On the Road" video, where we cover the engine start-up and take the Roadsport around the local area to learn more about the car.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or other issues with the suspension while on the road, and it gave us no concerns regarding its performance or handling. The car is positioned much lower than a standard road car and as such, the ride is a little firm on the road but not uncomfortable.

The brakes felt great and were easily able to bring the Caterham to a stop in a straight-line. We cover the underside of the car in our 'Mechanical Gallery' section. Head over to our video section, where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view. We take you through the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer.

The Drive

The Roadsport model in the Caterham range are an exercise in lateral thinking, where lack of weight is king. The handling is superb and it feels like the Roadsport really sticks to the road and corners.

This iconic roadster offers a thrilling connection between driver and road, combining precise handling with an unfiltered driving sensation that’s both exhilarating and unforgettable. It's a car that you’ve just got to drive to experience it.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and in great condition. Fuel, tachometer, speedo, and oil pressure gauge's all worked without concern.

Designed as more of a raw driving experience, the Caterham doesn't have more modern features such as air-con or a stereo. Really, the focus on the Seven is to provide a brilliant, fuss free - on the road experience. An additional tyre is available with the final sale should this be needed.

History and Paperwork

With just 2 former keepers, current ~5 year ownership and low mileage for its ~11 years on the road, this lovely Caterham has been covered by regular servicing and a recent cam belt change.

The Caterham hasn't needed a great deal of works completed over its short years and miles on the road. This example is a factory build and not a kit version.

There has been a cam belt change in May 2024 along with water pump, aux belt and rocker cover gasket renewal. The latest service works were also actioned in May 2024.

The Seven is complete with its owners handbook, 2 sets of keys and a great amount of servicing carried out on it over its years. The car is also supplied with a current and clean current MOT, valid until 06.05.2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
