Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

General Motors decided to focus all their attention on developing a proper American muscle car which could out-handle European sports cars.

The C4 generation of the Chevrolet Corvette was introduced from 1982 to 1996 known for its sleek and stylish looks the body was made out of reaction injected molding plastics and sheet molding compound. The C4 is also the first Corvette to have a glass hatchback for better storage access along with all new brakes with aluminum calipers.

A futuristic '80s interior is found inside with an electronic dashboard digital liquid crystal display for RPM and speed. Chevrolet really focused their development on how the car drives and handles the road, created using a "uni-frame" chassis.

The car was imported to the UK back in 2015, and has been in the current ownership for the past 7 months. The car comes with provenance from the United States, as well as servicing and maintenance actioned in Scotland too. It's clear to see from the condition of the exterior that this car has had significant expenditure over the years, the exterior condition belies the ~94,000 miles.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Steven the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always fancied an American Classic, and what better than the classic poster car, the Chevy Corvette.

Steven is a big petrolhead, and always loved the idea of owning a classic Chevrolet Corvette, an American muscle V8 to enjoy on the open Scottish roads. He purchased the car ~7 months ago from a mutual friend who needed to sell, and has enjoyed ownership over last summer.

He reports the car was imported to the UK in 2015, and still holds a lot of paperwork from the states having spent the majority of its life there. It appears in 2011 it has $22,000 worth of restoration work carried out. Steven will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Clean looks, lightweight body, and fantastic aerodynamics - the Corvette was a new evolutionary statement.

Wheels and Tyres

The C4 was fitted with uni-directional tyres and wheels specially developed with Goodyear which helped with the performance increase in the handling department.

Turbine style 16" original C4 wheels are fitted on this '87 example, all 4 wheels appear in very good condition with no signs for concern, take a closer look at the photos and videos for a detailed view.

The BF Goodrich G-Force Sport Comp-2G tyres look great on this example, they appear deep in colour with no signs of cracking and are dated 2016.

Bodywork

The Corvette is known for its sleek and stylish looks, the body was made out of reaction injected moulding plastics and sheet moulding compound, compared to the fibreglass body of the C3. The bodywork on this example appears in great condition. The panels appear very straight with the gaps and shut lines looking very good, as you would expect given the expenditure on the car before import to the UK.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a lovely deep navy blue which sets it apart from the usual Corvette colour pallet and suits the '80s square panels very well. Each panel presents a deep lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout.

The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The black trim around the car of the car appears in great condition. The glass looks great, with no signs of cracks or discolouration noticed. The C4 is also the first Corvette to have a glass hatchback for better storage access.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this Chevrolet Corvette.

Interior

A pioneering LCD digital dash, the interior on the C4 was a snug sports focused affair.

Seats and Carpets

The car is fitted with grey leather sports seats with matching grey carpet. The condition of the seats is very much in line with the mileage of the car, showing signs of use in the form of wear to the driver's bolsters and age-related creases etc.

The seats, door cards, headlining, and carpet look in similar condition. The uni-frame design resulted in quite large sills that need to be navigated over when entering and exiting the car, and so these also show their age. Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Dashboard

A futuristic '80s liquid display digital dash is present and reported to be working. The dashboard and controls, along with the various buttons and controls in the centre console, all appear in condition in line with the rest of the interior and Steven reports everything works as it should.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A two-spoke Corvette steering wheel is fitted along with an automatic gear selector - both items appear in used yet original condition and could benefit from some attention. View the media pack to see the details.

Mechanics

Powered by a brawny 5.7L, ~230BHP overhead-valve V8 which has a wide spread of power and is well-tuned for the four-speed auto box.

Engine and Gearbox

The C4 was developed in an era when stricter emission standards were coming in, and so performance from the V8 was somewhat constrained. ~230BHP, and a 0-60MPH time of 7 seconds, topping out at 150MPH.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting, please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay and underneath the car.

Suspension and Brakes

The car was equipped with rack-and-pinion steering, aluminium double-wishbone front, and multi-link rear suspension, and the unusual transverse fibreglass mono-leaf spring and both with anti-roll bars.

Steven reports that the brakes provide prompt stopping power, capable of taming the high-performance V8, and with suspension offering a firm focused drive, which gives the driver complete confidence with the ability to keep up with European competitors.

The Drive

The Corvette was a continuum of steady improvement over the years. The C4 is a small, affordable RWD with some truly iconic classic styling. These car are meant to be used, and this example wears its ~94,000 miles well.

Electrics and Other

A futuristic electronic dashboard showing speed and RPM in LCD form. Steven reports all the electrics, buttons, gauges etc work within the car to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Retro styling, the Chevrolet Corvette in all its forms always attracts attention, this US import offers a great value proposition for a RWD powered light-weight V8 sports car.

The car had significant expenditure to the tune of ~$22,000 before it was imported. Take a look at the history file to see the previous history and work carried out in the states, before being imported by the same owner to the UK in 2015. It is believed to have been stored for some time and recommissioned for import and use in the UK by the American owners. Steven will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.
