Introduction
Alan Stuart
A classic combination of design and power with the partnership of Citroen and Maserati coming together to create the SM.
In 1961 Citroen began work on 'Project S', a sports variant of the Citroen DS. Many concept cars were produced and evolved over the 9 year project, from simply developing faster models to creating entirely newly engineered cars. In 1968 Citroen purchased Maserati with one of the intentions being using the high performance engines and build quality to their advantage. Combining Citroen build and handling with Maserati speed, the aim of was to produce a high performance GT car. The result was the Citroen SM - combining craftsmanship and power in a newly developed model. Coming to market in September after the Geneva Motor Show in 1970, where it placed third in the 1971 European Car of the Year contest, the factory produced cars were largely all left-hand-drive versions.
This particular car was imported in to the UK in 2005, and comes to market from ~11 year ownership. The vendor is a Citroen enthusiast, this being their second SM, purchased with much of the important work completed for this model; upgraded timing chain, hollow sodium valves replaced with solid stems, and actioned a respray. It is an Italian market car, and comes in silver over red velour, typical for market due to the hot climate.

Can you ship to france for me ?
Hi, I’m your message below you stated that you have not driven it much because of the fear of the snapped timing chain, a know weakness. However in your driving video you state the chains and exhaust valves had been done. Please confirm if the stronger timing chain was fitted ? Thanks
Hello. The previous answer refers to the chains driving the aircon, not the chains driving the engine. The AIRCON chains are a known weakness. I haven’t driven it much as I haven’t really had the time rather than in fear of the timing chains. I don’t know whether the chains were replaced with stronger ones but I would imagine that they were bearing in mind the excellent quality of the work done.
Hi, do you know why the sm has a us spec tailgate and license plate lights? Was this also an Italian requirement? Thanks, Christian
No I’m sorry, I don’t know. It is certainly not a US car!
Apologies, Andrew, not Alan!
Alan, can you confirm the levels of surface rust under the car please?
What is the reserve price ?
I am sorry, I am not permitted to reveal the reserve price.
When was the last MOT please ?
The last MOT expired 3 March 2017. It is of course no longer a requirement for classic cars to have an MOT. The last pass had NO advisories. I doubt there would be any problems if it were resubmitted.
Lovely looking car. Please advise the following as I am unable to view prior to bidding.
1.Are all driver functions working including the air con?
2.Are there any fluid / oil leaks from either the engine, gearbox or suspension
3. Is the clutch good, or is it getting a little high.
Thank you
Hi Harv
1. Everything works well, including aircon which the previous owner sorted out. It’s probably fair to say I have never used it as the chains that run the aircon are a known issue with these cars so I have avoided using it. The electric window are a good compromise!!
2. No leaks from anywhere. There was an oil leak but my chap sorted it out about three weeks ago… it is now completely leak free.
The suspension lift almost instantly, the brakes are super -sharp and the steering is absolutely accurate with no give or looseness. All power assisted and with variable weight depending on speed.
3. Clutch is fine as far as I know… there are no gearbox or clutch problems. It’s a cracking car with no issues whatsoever.
All the best
Andrew
